Typical Saturday morning in the late 50's-early 60's: watch cartoons, eat Cheerios breakfast, bike to the local hobby shop, buy another model. Those shelves of kit boxes brought the memories flooding back...thanks. Forty-nine cents for a Hawk kit was the best deal in town!

One of the thrills of shopping the model aisle of a discount store in the early 1970s was finding the occasional 1950s old stock kit laying on the shelf. I always imagined someone in a distant, dusty warehouse found it forgotten at the back of a storeroom and sent it out to be sold. The Hawk XF-92 was such a find. A small, simple kit, it made a great addition to my fleet of aircraft.

It's like I said on Max's channel on one of his videos, I heard someone once say in regards to box art, you're not necessarily buying the product- you're buying the ANTICIPATION of the product. That's why exciting box art sold kits, and as you showed there was plenty.

My Dad worked for Revell in the art department he did the instruction sheets, My mother worked for a company called Romalite, they did the plastic molding for the models, she did the store display models, assembly and painting. When Revell closed their art department my Dad and his partner (who also worked at Revell) opened Graphic Advertising Design, they continued doing Revell instruction sheets for years, as well as Advertising design For McCullough engines and a variety of other companies. I got every model did the instruction sheets on FREE. At 75 I wish I had them all back.

A stellar episode! Man do I love vintage model kits. Over the course of my lifetime, like most of the rest of us, there has been many twists and turns, ups and downs, comings and goings. The one constant throughout all of it has been my association with the modeling hobby. Truly a lifelong love. At one time or another, I have built, and later collected, most of the kits shown in this video, which has put a huge smile on my face. Wonderful job as always, Mike. PS: Give my regards to all of your top-notch office staff. Also, a nostalgic shout out to Dot, Gert, Marge, Thelma, Josephine, Edna and all the rest of those fine dedicated ladies who packed those beautiful boxes, so many years ago, with the contents we would later turn into treasured built up scale models. And while we're at it, my favorite box art paintings from Revell are the WV-2 Constellation Early Warning Radar Picket, The Eastern Airlines Constellation, American Airlines Electra, and the Lockheed P2V-7 Neptune.

Mike, visit the Museum of the United States Air Force, at Wright-Patt, the B-58 ALONE is worth the trip. My last trip with my dad was so that he could tell me about the B-36, he wound up gaining a huge audience, including an assistant curator from the main operational office. He ID'd me, and I handed him my DD 214, then told me "leave something here, call me before 5:00 PM, I'll tell you we found it", bring dad back at 05:45 to pick it up. Three personnel lifted him into the cockpit, for 30 minutes, I saw him demonstrate the 'startup procedure callouts', I may digitize the 8-minute video, of that frail 60 y/o - recalling his days at Carswell; Chanute Field; and Kadena, with the vigor of a 20 year old. He didn't shut-up for the entire 700-mi return trip...

Ref the B58 kit. Did you now that Gerry Anderson Supermarionation productions prop builders did a lot of kit bashing? The B58's engine pods turned up all over the place. Being a British production company bits of Airfix kits, notably the famous railway girder bridge, were cannibalized for parts. There are a couple of videos on the net illustrating all this. Two other favourite kits were the Kaman Huskie and Saab Draken, which were morphed into many exotic futuristic looking machines.

The first model I received as a little boy was made by my uncle, it was the Aurora Phantom 110 - always loved Phantoms after that. The first model my father built for me was the Revell PBM-5 Mariner. Loved that box art and the moveable ball turrets!!!

Not only were we outraged by a lack of box art, you have also committed the crime of not showing a picture of the Republic Rainbow on more than one occasion! My father kept a huge binder of all the flattened box tops from the models he built in the 1950's & 60's, still got it, thinking about framing some of them. Keep up the great work.
@misterjaxon255910 ай бұрын
Absolutely do frame that box art. My collection of vintage models was just a couple stacks on a shelf until I built a 3 foot by 4 foot frame that I can slide them into. It looks great and it's just nice having them displayed on the wall.

In a Leave it to Beaver episode, I believe it is New Doctor from the 1st season in 1958, a sick at home Wally is holding a small scale, dark blue or black model of the Soviet Bison bomber with its Red Air Force stars. Ah those Cold War days:) Long wondered where that model was from, and here it is, a Revell kit (minute 3:34). I'll bet someone burrowed it from their kid at home and brought it to the set..
