The biggest gaslighting method ANTM used was the styling. Then blamed the girls for everything wrong in a picture, and most of it was the styling.

And you know that if any of them came back with "Well, I was given this look to wear/those shoes to use/these accessories to promote. Maybe you should consult the person who chooses the outfits?" (EX. When it was brought up in the archery shoot that the dress looked like spandex. She could have just as easily been given a slit dress or a tabard-style dress and that would have fixed the issue.) The judges would have jumped down their throats chastising them for badmouthing the costumer the way they are.

"why would you come all the way to Greece and make it black and white or sepia?" YES!! That was my first thought! 🔍👀 Okay so after watching this show since I was 8, and rewatching them with your reaction videos, I have come to the conclusion that the “you don’t know yourself” death-sentence is something ANTM does when they have a girl who presents herself as a whole person; instead of leaning into a single attribute in a cartoonish fashion. The “I’m a pArtY girl” girl is easily branded- she’s a party girl! The “awkward girl” is ‘quirky’, the “girl next door” is ‘humble’ and ‘relatable’- the diva is a diva and so on. The girls who refuse to present one single attribute over and over for editors to manipulate into a personality narrative, are branded as “who are you?!” We don’t know you”- when in reality it’s “we are having a hard time boxing this perfectly adequate, beautiful model into a singular brand.”🕵🏻♀️ Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk

I was on Finland’s NTM way back in 2011 and we had Nigel as a guest photographer/judge. He shot our fade out shots. Myself and another girl tied on best photo and we won a workshop with Nigel. He was fun to meet and learn from, but the whole concept of the cycle gets scripted when the producers meet you at the first casting. They assign a character to you as soon as they decide to cast you. They ask you provocative questions and edit it to be the character they assigned. When they want drama from you, they will pick a shitty picture. I ended up being first runner up but also the mean girl. I lost against a girl who had everything - height, body, face, but poor posing skills. They got so pissed with me when I said I think it’s not a competition - the girl who won pretty much had the photographers physically positioning her into poses they wanted her in. It was a fun experience but def just aiming to be great TV. I was a very disliked character and it didn’t really give me much advantage… until I filed for a US visa. That’s when 2 months of being on National TV really helped. So thanks, Fremantle Media ;)

I feel like it goes even deeper than that. If you weren't willing to expose your trauma to the public, you were punished for it. So many boundaries were broken and this was classed as 'normal'. For people who already have boundary difficulties for whatever reason, it's super toxic to be given the message that to be 'liked' you have to break them down for whoever.

I really hate the fact that they judge one picture, that is actually chosen by them! Like how is that fair? If the models were allowed to choose their best shot, then it would make more sense, but if it's really about modelling, they would always show 3-4 pictures. Several of the guests were previous contestants from "famous" episodes (that I think the poor things thought they were actually going to get to talk about how/where/what they were doing "now" post ANTM - but in reality it was just to put them back through the lowest point they'd had and re-live it on national television). One of the most telling regarding how little concern she had for the emotional/psychological well-being of others were her "undercover" episodes where she'd have non ANTM models do things (groundbreaking and insightful 🙄😑) like "Fat for a day".

They told her that Tyra agreed they wouldn’t talk about the trauma, so she decided to go. As she was getting ready to go out she hears the intro saying something along the lines of “you know Lisa from ANTM, but what you don’t know is that she was sexually abused when she was younger” and something about she was gonna talk about it, and then the backstage people literally SHOVED her onstage. As someone who used to throw shot put, let me tell you that it is really hard to make it look graceful. Javelin, gorgeous. Even discus is beautiful. Shot put is super scrunched up until the very last moment when you throw, and in order for it to look good, you actually have to be throwing, and know the forms to go through. Shot put has one of the most technical throws in fielding, there are a lot of steps to follow and it is very hard to make it flow without lots of practice.
@rebeccajesse46043 жыл бұрын

I actually watched two episodes of This show when it first aired, and was disappointed how much they were being rude to the models. These models are all beautiful and they kept putting the models down, to make the models feel bad about themselves, which brought memories of how I was treated. I've always wondered about the photo selections for judging. How they always seem to come up with a poor photo, and then blame the model. As a wildlife/landscape photographer, I don't blame my subjects when I get a poor photo. Timing, equipment (and Luck!) as well as the photographer's skill account for most of the quality of a photo. Nigel needs to step up and take some credit for good photos and some blame for bad ones. If you can't take an awesome picture of a beautiful model, that's on you dude.

It seems like they start off disliking one or two girls in particular, then they all take great joy in being particularly harsh on them. But even just overall, it seems like they REALLY enjoy being super catty and mean with all of the girls; I know that modeling can be very harsh and expectations are high, but I’ve always been very skeptical of this show, bc it seems like it’s more an opportunity to be mean than to teach or help anyone break into modeling. I’ve never modeled so it’s nice to hear the opinion of someone who has. The worst thing I’ve seen them do is where they made the runway a treadmill and the girls found out last second they had to run in stilettos on this thing. It was so hard to watch, bc it was clearly so dangerous. They could have been seriously injured so easily. I’m sure they are made to sign waivers, but I really wonder how they can do that without any risk of potential lawsuits. Stilettos aren’t made to be running shoes, if a heel were to break, the model could permanently damage their wrist, shoulder or whatever, trying to break their fall; or worse, fall off the runway completely. Injuries that could potentially end their careers. And the people that set it up seemed SO gleeful as the girls were mostly nervous and awkward, like the point of it was simply to humiliate them or possibly hurt them. This all just makes me wonder how modeling affects a young woman, like they are being held up as ‘the perfect beauty’, but at the same time they can be so harshly criticized and held to such unrealistic standards. I’m glad your experience wasn’t like these girls’! Edit: I know it’s not meant to be realistic, but I would imagine Ancient Greek athletes would have more athletic bodies, and wouldn’t be super thin model types. I mean, I think the girls are beautiful in this shoot, but it would be perfect to use more athletic types for this type of thing. But I guess the industry is determined to promote body types that are un achievable to most women! Sorry for the rant!

i wish for alisons 'discus' throw they gave her a more unique type of handbag like a rounded clutch/handbag with a little handle in a color that popped more or something would have been so rad... since its a DISCUS. i know they make round handbags- i HAVE one personally that is more round/oval and mine was only 80 bucks. these people have like a huge budget to get things that are more unique for their photo shoots and they go with a standard little black boxed-clutch to make her swing it around .

That bag is absolutely sinful that they gave her like it’s probably couture but it looks like oh we found this at Salvation Army here just hold it. Now if they would’ve used the discus and a statement type of bag it would have gone so much better. Like they look like they truly just threw her together in a way. But omg he just called everyone awkward it’s so insane. Like Nigel you’re acting like Nigel Thornberry, you need to chill. And her final photo was just like nope. It looked very amateurish for a photographer of his “caliber” I guess you could say, wouldn’t do something better with the photos. Allison looked nice in the end photo but it’s just not “it” very muddied together in a way and almost everyone else’s looked better with the coloration and depth it’s like Nigel got halfway through and quit. and the shoe comment, y’all should have put her in some cute flats on that type of terrain. RIP Allison’s heel in the background - we all know it wasn’t her fault.

@@marlyd yea i wrote the comment while i was watching the video ... realized the color wouldnt make a diff. when i got to the end, (i get why they chose black for color if they were doing it in sepia it makes sense so they would get a better contrast ) but they still should have chosen a better shape and more of a statement peice. a round handbag would have rocked for a photo trying to emulate throwing a discus ;)

the moment in the judging jessica pauses right at their pictures and critique’s before the judges speak to give positive feed back is just amazing it gives a whole different light to the show. she’s so cute
