Why put a json protocol on top of a stdin/out stack? Wouldn't this limit the opportunity of using tcp as an alternative? Isn't the innovation the json data structures and the asynchronous possibilities, and the communication mechanism is an unnecessary distraction? It would be interesting to see some robustness testing and performance metrics on stdin/out.

I imagine they're thinking of moving this to the web, where JSON is more common.

If I understand you, you are on the right track. MCP is a protocol for LLM apps to request data, etc. stdin/stdout is just one possible way to pass messages. For example, it makes sense for Claude's desktop app. I would imagine http and websocket implementations will also be common. I could be wrong, but I don't think there's any reason you can't use json-rpc with TCP alone.
