Hi everyone, thanks for watching. The modelling stand I'm using is currently unavailable. Sorry for this inconvenience but I plan to make it available again at www.theinnernerd.com I hope this video will be able to help you out if you're new to modelling or new to some techniques used when making one. I tried to cover everything that has been asked in the comments sections from my other videos but keep it simple at the same time. Sorry if I don't shut up for a lot of the video, there's a lot to cover! Anyway here I go again... Let me know what you think and if you'd like to see more beginner/intermediate tutorial styled videos in the future and if so what should they cover? The Inner Nerd

Okay that's good to know. Just for reference for others too here is my working pressures using my H&S Evo Silverline. The thinning ratios are never calculated to measurement, more paint-by-paint, but if you see here 20:18 and here 21:51 in the video you can see how the paint should spray. 0.15mm needle/nozzle throughout all paintwork. Primers: 12psi Paint: 10psi Clears & Metallic: 8psi

I've been an award winning aeromideller since the early 1970s (and I was aeromodelling even earlier than that). I know (almost) all of the tricks, but I'm happy to say even I have picked up new ideas today. This video should be promoted by all of the aircraft model kit manufacturers. It is absolutely superb. I take my hat off. Indeed, one of my many professional roles is that I'm a consultant educator. Not only do you really know your stuff, but you are a superb educator. Amazing. Just from reading your comments accompanying the video I can see you are a perfectionist with professional attention to detail. I wonder if younger viewers still have the mindset for this in the new media driven throw away society. Your personality shines in the build. Is model building your only hobby sir? I am 66 and perhaps trying my hand at too many activities, As my father used to say - Jack of all trades and master of none. None of these supplies are available where I live in Eswatini Africa - In fact there is not a single hobby shop in the entire country. It does make the hobby extremely expensive as you have to import every single item - if you can afford to do so. Best build channel I have found to date. Keep up the great work.

I try my best to share what I've learned to viewers, being that guide I looked for when I started to make models again. There does seem to be a younger audience still in this hobby which is nice to see. The TV doesn't always fill that void and need to actually make something luckily. I do have other hobbies which are all part of the channel - photography, film making, 3D printing - so that's also why I started the channel, one mega project to bring them all together. I'm sorry to hear that the hobby isn't accessible in Africa, I hope my channel fills that need for you. Thanks for watching :)

This let’s me go back to the end 70s beginning 80s where I was really into modeling! Especially early ww2 aircraft. I won many IPMS contests, reaching 1st place in 3 US state’s. It’s astounding how one stagers the search for more authenticity and perfection. Does squadron Green putty still exist? Or Flowquill airbrush paint’s? Airfix was in it’s mold details quite coarse, hasagawa and Tamina was the none plus ultra at that time. But not all models came from good mold’s and one had to adjust the details. One tends to over weather or detail , I think this is where the perfection starts. Often to large rivets or panel joints. Less is often more ! Question does a silver paste still exist? I used it for creating bare metal optics, it’s somewhat oil based so if oversprayed one can use a piece of tape to pull of bits of deck paint on leading edge areas to simulate chipped paint. Nice to see that modeling is still going good. I wonder if kids still get into it? Or has the PlayStation taken all the room ? Nice vid

So many of us older guys seem to be returning to this fabulous hobby. Speaking from my own experience, I tried to introduce my own children to the pleasures of model building but they just didn't get into it, in part because there are so many alternative attractions (including PlayStation and other video games) and also because they didn't have the same affinity for those classic World War Two aircraft that those of us born in the decades after the war felt. There was also an issue with patience! Back in the day, if the weather was too nasty to allow us to play outside, there really weren't that many other ways to enjoy play time but building a model aircraft was most certainly one of the most appealing ones for many of us.

Well as I mentioned in the video this equipment is what I've built up over the 5 years I've run the channel and been modelling. I'm doing this alongside a full time job unlike some of the other KZbinrs. But I hope the message got through that you don't need the most expensive tools, just higher quality ones combined with some good techniques and processes can make a relatively good model at the end. The skills throughout the video are what is needed to make a model to this standard, whether people think that is good or not is another debate. But there are many more processes that I missed out or simplified in an attempt to keep the video beginner to intermediate friendly. The only tools to make this were the ones shown at the beginning at the video. So some snips, a pin vise, sandpapers, tapes and an airbrush, then of course the paints of your choice. If you're new to modelling you don't necessarily need all of these immediately to make a model, but you will to make one turn out like this. Thanks for watching :)

I understand where you’re coming from as I watched this video before doing an airfix starter kit and felt overwhelmed however after realising the limitations of the kits equipment and my beginner skill level I returned to this video to find it incredibly helpful. I will use some of the equipment and techniques from this video in my next build and will probably return again to this video in future. So yes, for a simple build using paints, glue and a single brush from a starter kit, this video is over complicated but for a beginner who wants to take the hobby seriously and produce a decent finished model this video is probably the best of its kind on KZbin

Surely your intelligence should cut in here, to take in and adapt what you glean from this very instructional and helpful video and make it your "own thing" rather than slavishly carrying out the whole procedure. I think they call it something like "watch and learn" then make it your own. Take away the bits you want to use rather criticizing this man's work.

@@miltonarts weird i thought criticism was usually viewed as a positive thing, considering i was not degrading the video, just saying how i felt a bit overwhelmed. Also, you seem to have completely missed the point on my comment my dude. I didn't say anything about not adapting or anything of the sort. In fact, like i said, it was quite a helpful video. @TheInnerNerd3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching :) Starting cheaply and simply is a good method. You'll need to learn the basic techniques I outline in the video before trying them all out with the more professional equipment. The basic tools in my opinion would be; Snips, Tweezers, Sandpaper, Extra Thin Cement, Paint, Brushes and that's about it. That is the bare bones of what will help you make a scale model. All of the other stuff is to add the effects like weathering and to get the decals to sit properly - but isn't entirely necessary if you don't want to - that can come later :) There is a link in the description to a good starter setup for an airbrush. Don't go expensive straight away - learn the ropes first before you splash out on an expensive brush. And also a more expensive brush isn't actaully necessary. The airbrush in the description is easily good enough as long as you keep it clean. I think it's a myth that a super expensive airbrush will do a bette rjob. In my experience the quality comes from the paint and thinning along with pressure adjustment. Unless you're painting miniatures an expensive brush is a little bit overkill. I hope this helps and thanks for watching :)

Just found the channel, great stuff. I built models a a kid and am just getting back into to it. Oil stains and air based run marks I place a large blob of paint at the point of exit, then simply hold my model in the orientation of flight and using my air gun I blow the paint in the direction I desire. No need to replicate oil flow marks with a brush when you can use the real thing!!
@TheInnerNerd9 ай бұрын
Hello and welcome. Your method is also good although I find it less controllable when relying on air to do the work vs a brush. Best of luck with your projects and thanks for watching:)

That’s some insane (excellent) detail, especially inside a 1/72 cockpit that you pretty much can’t see inside anyway. Bravo, Sir! Modeling has come a long way since the 70’s!
@TheInnerNerd3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I wanted to demonstrate how to roughly detail a cockpit even though I intended to close the canopy afterwards. But it’s always good to practise detailing there, good learning can come from playing with effects you’ll ultimately not see. Thanks for watching :)
@catlady83243 жыл бұрын
@@TheInnerNerd That’s exactly what I thought you were doing: Mostly for a nice demonstration and partly for a “Test” or “Warm up” towards the high visibility important parts. I noticed you use silver for your chipped paint aluminum effect. Dad used to do that in a whiteish very very light gray. If you look at any aluminum that has a patina (age/oxidation), it’s a whitish color and not a bright silver. I’m not trying to be impolite to your “Mad skills” (As the kids say), but Dad and I built some great models. We did lots of 1/48 WWII fighters and bombers and also some nice WWI planes and a huge Gotha bomber where the thread rigging took longer than the model itself! Thank you, Sir.
@TheInnerNerd3 жыл бұрын
That’s right it does look more matte than bright silver. I’ll try that out the next time I get to use the effect. I find it interesting how our mind can trick us into seeing what we know it to be, not actually what it is. The same reason I don’t use black in my weathering (unless it needs it) because we think dirt is black, but dark blue or brown is often much more realistic.

I've really been wanting to get into modeling again as a whole, used to do railroading and some naval models when I was younger. However I think you've really put together the video myself, and certainly many others, have needed to see in order to get back into or start a hobby that can be very intimidating to beginners. I know I myself was both very excited and very scared to try weathering and kitbashing for the first time, let alone scratch work. Hello I’m new to modelling, can someone please elaborate on 10:50 when he mentions opposite varnish or oil wash to another? So if I’m using acrylic weathering would I have to use enamel varnish? thanks In advance!! :)
@TheInnerNerd3 жыл бұрын
Hello and welcome to the hobby! That's right, it's important to use the opossing varnish to any layers you intend to put on the top for weathering. So for Acrylic washes it would be an Enamel varnish and vice versa so that the thinners used to take off or manipulate the weathering products don't react with the clear layer that's protecting the paint underneath. Hope this helps. Good luck and thanks for watching :)

Thank you. This one was made to answer all of (or most) of the questions I'd seen in the comments section across my channel. I didn't have all of this at the start that's for sure! But hopefully people can take away what they want from the video. It's not entirely necessary to to have all of this equipment, nor is it necessary to complete a model. But you'll need it if you want to complete one to this level. I'm hoping that viewers can use this as a reference for basic techniques on which ever area of model making they struggle with or have questions about. So over time they can apply it to various models rather than in one hit. I've been modelling for 5 years now and got to this level by trying things out. Starting cheaply and simply is a good method. The basic tools in my opinion would be; Snips, Tweezers, Sandpaper, Extra Thin Cement, Paint, Brushes and that's about it. That is the bare bones of what will help you make a scale model. All of the other stuff is to add effects like weathering and to get the decals to sit properly - but isn't entirely necessary if you don't want to. I hope this guide can be useful for viewers to take away the parts that apply to them right now and in the future as you start to build up a collection of tools for each task. Thanks for watching and subscribing and best of luck with your return to modelling :)
