For me, Gia Carangi is more 1979. In 1980 the rising star was Brooke Shields, she was everywhere (Kim Alexis did also really good that year). Ok for 1983, Renee Simonsen dominated the scene (booked for 8 covers by Vogue). Yasmin Le Bon deserves a spot in the list.

gotta say even though i love Grace Jones i don't think she was ever a Top Model back then...even she said she was a working model but no one understood her look. plus there are almost no pictures of her early modeling day...everything we see is post 1980 when she was a singer.

She was. Many models including Naomi Campbell hate being called a supermodel, instead she rather be called a "working model." I still think the girls from the 70's were the best. Renee Russo was my favorite...went on to become an A-List actress in Hollywood, and so was Lauren Hutton and Grace Jones.

@@polyprinz I think the 70s was a very transitional time period it set a stone for many women today. Plus the glamour was on another level back then and the Studio 54 disco era heavily influenced models, actors and singers back then. I think the 70s were a time that I’m extremely jealous of because I didn’t get to experience it being born in 2003 and my favourite model Gia has some sort of hold on me she’s so alluring in her photos and such a unfortunate thing that Gia got AIDS and passed away in 1986 at 26 years old such a young age to die

It was more implemented in the 1990s to urge print work models to do runway modelling now and then. Like Gia was the first sought after print work model by Perry Ellis in 1980 he really wanted her because of her stunning beauty and she was reluctant because she was nervous to do it but she went out and did and you can see she was nervous on the Perry Ellis runway in 1980 I think she was 19 or newly 20 so still extremely young

I never liked Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Beverly Johnson. Teigs was okay, and I liked Patti Hansen but I was never a big fan of Christie Brinkley.

08:30 Claudia Schiffer is a gorgeous woman. But her look was more earthy. It had no business on any high fashion runway because she only looked good with that crown of fringe and borderline-tart hairstyle. It’s completely at odds with anything outside of a swimsuit. You could never (and they tried) use her on anything that involved a bun, or a french twist because she would disappear and become unrecognizable. And, dare I say, forgettable. Whereas Cindy Crawford, also famous for the “everyday girl” look had the bone structure to leave her famous Oríbe style behind for a more editorial look and survive the experience. Claudia could not. It’s like that one hairstyle was her only look. Be it Chanel, YSL, De la Renta she was gonna cum down the runway in that bimbo hairstyle Pamela Anderson would later co-opt. That Schiffer ever got to be a top model is truly baffling to me.

@@Vicente_Vasquez I think Wilhelmina Cooper tried her hardest to get more ethnic women into the modelling world but it was extremely tough back in the 1970s and it’s unfortunate that she died in 1980 at 40 years old. She was a popular model in the 1960s and she created her own modelling agency called Wilhelmina Models and she took on Gia to shift from blonde blue eyed models to brunette brown eyes models because she was tired of the blonde blue eyed image. Wilhelmina herself was brunette brown eyed and wanted change. I think if she lived past 1980 more ethnic women would’ve been seen and Gia probably would’ve still been alive too as the death of Wilhelmina greatly affected her and she turned to injecting heroin instead of snorting/smoking it and she died of AIDS in 1986
