This video is less than 2 months old, and a lot of the information is already outdated! That's how quickly Tesla can change stuff up. The 7 seater now has new middle row seats which fold flat. This makes the 7 seater a lot more practical than before. Tesla also rolled the audio upgrade and cold weather package into the premium upgrade package. The new package is $6000 which is cheaper than the 3 old packages combined, but it's more expensive if you only wanted one or two of the other packages.

The Nerdy Engineer Does this change your opinion of the premium upgrade package? I'm debating whether to drop it to save a little money.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+Barbara Morehouse , good question. I think for most people, the Premium Upgrade Package is less appealing now, unless they wanted most of those items. The total bundle is cheaper than it used to be (if you wanted PUP, Subzero package, and premium audio). But if you only cared about a couple of features (biohazard mode and self presenting driver's door), then it's really hard to justify the cost. If you're trying to save money, and you can live without the PUP, then I'd say skip it. Personally, if I was buying a new Model X right now, I'd most likely skip the PUP.

Just ordered my Model X 100D with Premium Upgrade Package. Total value is great for the Premium Sound, Weather Package and all the other stuff. I had almost chosen it only to be able to tell friends I have Bio Weapon Defense Mode LOL! In Europe you also get DAB+ digital radio. The price is small compared to to cost of the total car...

Thank you for the referral code - Used to purchase our new 100D Model X, 6 seats (agree with your trapped feeling, easier access and leg room pro). Went for 20" wheels (it is an SUV) after all, white on white (amazing), premium package (now expect all doors to open for me 😉), premium sound (amazing quality to music and daughter loves the on demand DJ service 😀), tow package (maximize space inside when skiing or for bikes), EAP (very cool feature that will keep getting better). Overall amazing car that feels like driving in the future. Keep up the great videos 👍👏

+Lyn Cameron I saw that, thank you so much! That was record time from order to delivery, did you get an inventory vehicle? That sounds like an awesome configuration. I love the white on white look! Haha, you'll definitely put your foot on the brake in other cars and forget that you have to close the door manually! It happens to me every time! Enjoy you Model X! The best part is it'll actually keep getting better over time with software updates! Thanks again for using my referral!

I'm so glad I found this video. I have a very specific question that I've only been able to speculate about, but since you're in Colorado AND go up the mountains I think you can answer my questions! My question is: -How much loss do you get in the winter when it's snowing and using winter/snow tires? Ex: How many miles left does it show when you get to the top? -Do you have winter or snow tires? -Do you go with people or by yourself? If you do go with someone, what's the range loss by adding someone else and all their gear? -Which resorts can you get to on a single charge? I often go to A-Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge, and rarely Vail. I should also note that I am in Colorado Springs. Literally the only thing holding me back from buying the upcoming Model 3 is my concern with reaching the resorts from the Springs and the winter conditions.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+wavey61 it's hard to know the exact amount of range loss because there are so many factors, but it can be significant. The good news is that there's a Supercharger at the Park Meadows Mall and Silverthorne so worst case you could change up at one or both of those Superchargers. I've gone all the way from Denver to Winter Park and back on a single change. I believe I had about 70 miles of range left. From the Springs, I wouldn't try a round trip on a single charge. I'd probably plan on hitting up the Silverthorne Supercharger on your way up to the mountains. I usually go with one other person. I don't know how much additional range loss there is from having a passenger and their gear. I have all season tires. Try checking out EV Trip Planner. You can select a Model S or Model X, different battery sizes, added weight (passengers/gear), and some other factors. It'll tell you if you have to stop and charge, and how long you need to charge. Keep in mind it's for a one way trip though. Breck only has 1 free charger and it's always taken, plus it's very slow. There are some Tesla Destination Chargers at some of the fancy hotels in the mountains, but you have to be staying there to use those. Vail has a couple of universal chargers in their parking garage, but they aren't that fast either so don't expect a full charge during a day if skiing. It's probably enough to get you back to the Silverthorne Supercharger though. I think you'll definitely be able to make it from the Springs, it's just a matter of which Superchargers you have to stop at in your way.
@wavey61
@wavey61 7 жыл бұрын
I'm okay with stopping at the Silverthrone superchargers. I was just nervous that I wouldn't be able to make it to Silverthrone on a single charge from the Springs.

Brett, I really like your videos and watched a few before I ordered my X last year. I went with the following and don't regret the choices at all: 1) 6 seats 2) enhanced auto pilot 3) full self driving - I think this will eventually be a help to many people who are not able to drive themselves and I wanted to speed up the development 4) premium upgrade package - I wanted the cornering lights (have them on my Tiguan and love them where I live with no street lights), perforated seats and the biohazard mode 5) upgraded sound system - I checked out both systems in Xs and could definitely tell the difference 6) towing package for general ability to tow utility trailers and small campers 7) zero degree package because we also live in CO I also passed on the high current charger because we pay a flat $.10 per kilowatt hour and I simply charge overnight for as long as I need.

Let me make it even worse. We now have a ~7KW solar setup with net metering. So, the incremental cost of charging is actually 0 since even with the daily charging, we are generating a surplus of electricity. I am sitting at a surplus of 268KWH since we turned on the system (5/31/17).

Did you test drive a normal 100D? The acceleration on a 100D is still pretty impressive and you can save yourself a ton of money vs a P100D. Also, check with you owner adviser because since it's the end of the quarter right now, you can usually get a really good deal on an inventory car. And the inventory P100D's usually have a bigger discount than the 100D's.

I live in the UK and over here this range thing is overplayed. A friend, who knows just the tiniest bit about EVs, has started saying, '...ah yes, but they don't have the range,' He doesn't mention the obvious thing which is, 'they are still too damn expensive for most people.' He does accept that they are generally superior in all other respects. But, in the UK, a range of 200-250 is absolutely fine for most people [and him too] to go through even a week of motoring and then do a charge at the weekend. And the winter range is a bit overplayed too. FFVs do worse mpgs in the winter than they normally achieve [they do best in late spring]. And they are worse into headwinds and better into tailwinds. Its not like EVs have the monopoly on performance variation here.

I have a Model S with the 22kW charger. I frequently leave my car in restricted charging spots while doing something else, such as going to the cinema or buying plants at the local rare plant market. Agree with your comment about the seven seater. Only buy this optio if you are sure you will give rides to seven people on a regular basis. I also noted that you can't see much in the rear view mirror if you have the seven seater
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer

Yes, the visibility out of the rear view mirror is bad enough in the 6 seater, it's pretty much useless in the 7 seater. Although, even with my 6 seater, I use the backup camera 95% of the time now. The ultra wide angle view comes in handy.

Although this is kinda beside the point now (because them having been discontinued), IMO the ventilated seats (for the Tesla) seem to be more trouble than it was and always been worth. Because for once, as you mentioned, the air flow "isn't really there". I have (still, but not for long, switching to a Tesla soon) Ford Fusion with perforated / ventilated seats. It works awesome, great during the summer for the added air flow, great for the winter with a quick boost of warmth. Especially on long trips, it's a must (for ICE cars). Not so much for a Tesla, IMO, because you can have the HVAC on 24/7 (AFAIK), so it's just a matter of planning ahead and keeping the car plugged in (AFAIK this works). Plus, as you said, you can pre-cool / heat via phone anyhow, so again, a little bit of planning ahead and it remedies the situation. Though, again, if making a long(er) trip and doing so regularly, if it's hot / freezing, then it can be quite a nuisance having to activate the HVAC and setting the temp. Secondly, at least in the Ford Fusion with perforated / ventilated seats - and despite that the ventilation is really strong, if set on highest level - dust, lint and possibly also liquids "sneak" through the perforation and onto / into whatever is behind it. Lastly (or maybe there's more?), they seem to be more prone to rip - things can get snagged in those little holes and then when pulled (by accident, usually) can create a rip. So, all those things considered and especially because initially I've been wanting the perforated / ventilated seats, IMO Tesla made the right choice there, just like with everything else, so far, even the PUP.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+themax2go very good points. I definitely agree. The Tesla ventilated seats didn't really provide any cooling unlike Ford's ventilated seats. And the perforations are more likely to tear. Although, for the white seats, I think they look better with the perforations.

The Model X is awesome, but the Model 3 is pretty great too. It doesn't have all of the special features that the X has, but it does supercharge a lot faster because of the batteries and it's more efficient so it needs less kWh to travel a mile. And the new air vents in the 3 are much nicer than the X. Let's face it, all Teslas are awesome!

I wanted the ventilation in the seats and the upgrade sound plus the blacks wheels. I don't care about the full self driving because I'm too uncomfortable with that and I prefer to be in full control when I drive. I like the space of the 5 seat but prefer the look of the 6 seat. I want the premium upgrade package as well. So hopefully a Black on Black Model X 100D in like 2 years when my BMW X6 lease is up will be in my future 🙏🏽👍🏽😜!
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+morpheusmann in 2 years you'll probably be able to get a 130D or something like that! It'll be interesting to see what new features Tesla incorporates over that time too. Maybe they'll bring back the ventilated seats, but this time make the AC seats so that they actually provide more of a cooling effect. The nice part about how Tesla's Autopilot currently works is you just have to turn the wheel or step on the brake to disengage it. So I wouldn't be too worried about not having control in full self driving mode. Although, since Tesla installs all of the hardware regardless of whether you buy Autopilot or not, it allows you to pay to unlock it later. So after you get comfortable with Autopilot, then you could decide if you want to unlock full self driving.

The Nerdy Engineer I'm still deciding, finding it tough to determine if there's value in the 6 seater with or without the console. I'll have two care seats that I'd rather not have to move around should there be an additional rider so I'm thinking without. Any idea if the carseats need to be removed to move the middle bench forward? My husband is a real tech guys so probably as many bells and wistls as possible is the most likely scenario.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 6 жыл бұрын
If one of the car seats is forward facing, you might be able to move that seat forward a little to squeeze past it to get into the 3rd row. My 6 seater doesn't have a center console. It's nice to have the extra access to the 3rd row, but a can see a center console being nice because there isn't an interior arm rest.

The Nerdy Engineer where I am we have rear facing until A child is about 4, and then forward facing for an additional 2 to 3 years before using a booster seat which is also forward facing until the child is approximately 100lbs. So we will have Atleast 1 or 2 rear Facing seats for the life of our lease for sure. Im thinking a console, what good for storage, is not going to be as useful when compared to accessing the back seat without having to remove the carseats every time.. Thanks for talking that out with me. 6 seats, no console it is!!

Great video, thanks for giving such pragmatic attitude. I commute 140 miles round trip to work, and have been thinking seriously about a Tesla and the best model for my family would be the X 100d. I just can’t get over the massive price tag, how can I justify it? Thank you
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, the Model X is definitely pricey. Is your commute mostly interstate miles? If so, then Autopilot will change your life! Your commute will be significantly less stressful and tiring. Eventually Autopilot should be fully self driving (meaning you could sleep in the car), but even at the current level, it makes interstate and bumper to bumper traffic SOOO much better. You could look at the used market, but honestly with the price reduction over the past 6 months on new Teslas, the used ones aren't that appealing in comparison. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm happy to help!

The Nerdy Engineer, thank you for taking the time to reply. 85% of my commute is highway including tolls NE US. I’m also an engineer and find my self attracted to technology of the Tesla brand, but again the only model I would get it would be the X 100d 7 seats config and that’s about $94k. The Q is in 5 to 7 years from now would I look back and think I made the right decision? Did you? Thank you so much.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 5 жыл бұрын
I can totally relate. I love the cutting technology of Tesla. Heck, there's still a lot of stuff about the original Model S from 2012 that other car manufacturers STILL haven't matched (EV range, OTA updates, 17" touchscreen, no button to press to turn the car on/off, etc). I don't know of anyone that's bought a Tesla and regretted it. It's a lot of money, but it's such an amazing vehicle. Especially the Model X. The Model X seems lightyears ahead of everything else. I have the 6 seater, but I actually prefer the utility of the 7 seater with the fold flat middle row. You can't fit long, wide objects inside the 6 seater because the seats in the middle row don't fold. I think you'll be very happy with a Model X. And one of the best things about Teslas is they actually improve over time through the OTA software updates. So your car feels newer than it really is. Heck, even the original Model S's from 2012 still get the occasional update! So if you're the type of person that keeps their car for 6-10 years, then a Tesla is probably the perfect car for you. Good luck with your decision! Let me know what you end up deciding!

The Nerdy Engineer, I am a car 🚗 person. My family and I take road trips all the time, I traded a Range Rover for a Chrysler T&C which has 240k miles and I’m 2nd owner and we’ve owned it for 8 years now. I buy a car and drive it till it fails me. As an engineer my team and I test things until it fails to make them better. I do love the practicality of the Model X, it’s perfect for today’s family of 5+. The storage front and back the seating and the tech amenities for today’s generation kids. Living in NE of States is good because now we have and abundant amount of SC to charge and plan trips pass the 600+ miles. I also love the fact that the Tesla gets younger and smarter and more efficient with time due to the updates which sometimes it’s consumer driven and that’s the way it should be. Thank you so much, I really appreciate your input. I did subscribe to keep in touch and let you know when we pull the trigger.

I can't understand why, with larger wheels, you get less mileage. If the larger wheels rotate less in the same distance, would it not be that you would use less battery?
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 5 жыл бұрын
Typically larger wheels are heavier and have increased rolling resistance. Also, typically the outside diameter of the tires are very close so the wheel doesn't actually rotate less. If the outside diameter of the tire changes too much, then the speedometer and odometer will need to be reprogrammed or they'll be off. Now, I'm not sure why Tesla's 22's are so inefficient compared to their 20's. I've heard that some aftermarket 22's are better in terms of efficiency than Tesla's.

@@BrettTheNerdyEngineer The one issue I have with the network is that they have no chargers in the rest areas on the PA Turnpike, so instead of pulling of without added mileage, you have a couple of fast food choices and rest rooms, you have to exit and find the chargers, a few extra miles out of the way. Great video. Trying to decide on Model X for some time now. Wonder if you could answer questions about total overall costs. What have you spent on insurance, registration, installing 240 wiring in the garage and any other costs associated with owning a model X. I realize insurance and registration will vary state by state but any information you can offer would help me look at realistic total cost. Thanks
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! All of those costs are pretty variable. The 240v wiring can be as cheap as $300 if your circuit breaker is in the garage close to where you want the outlet, and if there's room in your box. You'll need room for a 50 amp breaker. It can cost $2k+ if you need to upgrade your panel and the panel is far from your garage. Make sure you get multiple quotes. I got 5 quotes on my installation, and it ranged from $500-$1500 for the exact same installation! The registration varies a ton state to state. Some states have a flat registration fee of $100+, others charge a yearly ownership tax on vehicles. In Denver, I think my registration for the first year was over $1500, but the tax drops each year. Car insurance also ranges from $500-$1500+ /6 months. It really depends on the if you get the Performance version vs a non-performance version. And as usual, rates vary from company to company so you'll want to shop around. Sorry I don't have a more precise answer for you. For the taxes/registration, you can try looking online for your county, or talk to a Tesla Owner Advisor.

A couple of times when you were talking about range you mentioned that if the roads are wet your range will suffer. Can you explain why that is?
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+awmustang420 what I've read is that when the roads are wet(rain or snow), the tires basically have to push the water/snow out of the way. Most of it is pushed into the gaps between the treads. That extra work that your tire is doing causes the car to work harder and reduces your range.

I have a comment as a PSA, not related to the topic of the vid, yet related to Tesla (cars) - though the video at 9:05 did compel me to write the following: In short - you already drive an environmental friendly car, with (at least it's relatively likely) environmentally (and ethically) produced seats and this also applies to other areas of the car... so why not switch your eating habits to non-animal foods? AKA vegan? AKA whole-foods, plant-based (lifetime!) diet? Live a better, healthier life by rejecting the brainwashing of the animal agriculture industry (meat, eggs, milk, cheese) - you can still have plant-based milk, egg-like product, plant-based cheese and even meat (more and more different ways and concepts of those being produced each year, for those desperate carnivores). Save your money that you have to pay for medical bills and drugs, by rejecting to eat animal products. It worked for many people, curing / reversing / reducing coronary heart disease, diabetes, ... It's not some wonder drug that you have to pay for - it's just plants (what you eat anyone already, minus all the animal junk in it, replaced by their plant-based equivalents) that we, humans, were always meant to eat; we never were meant to eat meat and milk and eggs AKA chicken periods, humans only started this because they had no access back during the time of the early development of the human species (pre-Neanderthals and shortly after also), but plant foods are readily available now in grocery stores... so what's your excuse, other than giving in to brain-washing of the media and animal agriculture industry to sell their junk and make billions of $ off you!? The tl;dr version and really to provide context and info on the why and how: Tesla has recently (around mid-2017) removed all animal products (at least leather, AFAIK) from all sales of new Tesla cars - replaced by "vegan leather". Why should you care? Because it's a sign. And, if you're like me and follow news, there are more signs toward "the vegan movement" (and no, I don't mean buy vegan meals at supermarkets - yuck - or "salads" / rabbit food; you can eat anything as you have now, minus animal products that you can easily replace with a vegan alternative - plus, it will reduce your food costs by a lot, if you do it smart AKA buy ingredients in bulk!). In regards to "vegan leather", what this means opposed to animal leather, it means all those toxic (and those are quite a lot) chemicals being used to "cure" animal leather, they are not needed to create equivalent (and in fact, better, as many customers / reviewers have noted) vegan leathery material. So the environmental impact is huge, next to the car itself not using gasoline and oil. Why think about this for a moment and then think about what you are putting into your body and why not change that. But why would you - why should(!) you? Search for "What the health" on YT, it's also on Netflix (I don't have Netflix, that's what I've heard / read). Even though with some topics being presented a bit "sensational" in the documentary, it doesn't make them any less valid. It's time to "take the red pill" and wake up. Meaning, rejecting all and every animal product as food source (and probably also a good idea in non-food products, but IMO less a priority compared to food products - because animal food can kill / kills). And don't believe pseudo-science from people trying to "debunk" nutritional specialists and surgeons... especially "Zdogg" - as some smart people have pointed out, it's not wise to take health / nutrition advice from someone with that name, or from people with double chins and other signs of them not being healthy... I made the change early 2017 and I don't look back. While people are getting sick, developing medical problems (some more short-term, but many in fact long-term), I just look at them and pity them. Well, I tell people about the whole-foods plant-based lifetime(!) diet, but I try not to push it too much - if someone has a question, they can ask me about it and I'm happy to help, but being annoying by being pushy about it, is not the way to go IMO. I know change can be (ok, it is) an inconvenience (at first), especially when it comes to a diet it requires to know the why and the how and that takes personal effort. Maybe instead of watching that TV show or movie, why not research the subject some. It will take a few hours, but it will make you healthier, feel better and in consequence you will feel happier about yourself. At the end, ask yourself: how much (or rather, a little time and effort) is your life worth to you?! If you think about it, it's really a no-brainer.

The Nerdy Engineer, did you go the financing route for your’s? Did you use a local bank or work through Tesla? How does this process work if you have an outstanding loan on a gasoline vehicle?
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 5 жыл бұрын
I financed mine through a credit union. You can use this Google Doc (bit.ly/TeslaLoans) to find the best rates from different credit unions. You can usually get a better rate through a credit union than you can from Tesla. Tesla will accept your trade in, but usually they give you a crappy offer. CarMax will usually give you a better offer than Tesla. Some people have had success getting Tesla to match CarMax's offer. You can also sell your car yourself to get more money (autotrader/cars.com), but it can be a hassle depending on the car and how much it's worth.

Elon has said that features that are a part of FSD ('differentiating from EAP') are supposed to start rolling out starting in July. Who knows the real timeframe, but people need to stop talking about FSD as if it's full autonomy only and means nothing until 'laws are changed' everywhere. It's not a binary application choice.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+Richmond Sweet there's no way it'll happen by July. Enhanced Autopilot still isn't even on par with AP1. And Enhanced Autopilot is supposed to do more than AP1 so I bet it'll be a while before we start seeing Full Self Driving features start being activated. I do agree, that there are some things Tesla can so with FSD before the laws change, but seeing how cautious they've been with the AP2 rollout, I think we won't see much in terms of FSD capability until the laws change. Who knows though, Elon does like to push boundaries!

@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+Richmond Sweet hmm maybe. I always viewed the FSD features as the next step beyond EAP. But you could be right. My point in recommending people only buy EAP right now is because this video is geared towards people without unlimited funds that are trying to get the most value out of their money. That's why I didn't even discuss the P100DL. I think since FSD is a feature that can be added later, there isn't much harm in someone waiting on the FSD upgrade. I definitely agree that AP2 won't just go to FSD one day. There will most likely be lots of FSD features released that build up to FSD.

As far as I know, the FSD and EAP are not with the same hardware. FSD has 8 cameras vs only 4 in EAP. So it cannot be just software activated after delivery of the car. It will need some hardware installation too. Is it sure that for the higher cost of this upgrade, FSD can be installed in Tesla service center afterward?

Tesla charges about $17,000 to give the model X 25 extra kWh. Yet Tesla claims it can make a model 3 with a 55-60 kWh battery for $35,000. Something doesn't add up. If I buy two model 3s worth of parts for $70,000 and tell them to shoehorn it all in one model 3, I would have 110-120 kWh battery and dual motor, and enough money spent on interior materials to get the the same quality they use in model S or X, two displays, etc. Something doesn't add up.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+IMHO don't forget, the batteries in the Model S and Model X aren't from the gigafactory so they cost more. Plus, I'm sure Tesla is getting a higher margin on the Model S/X than it plans to get with the Model 3.
@imho7250
@imho7250 7 жыл бұрын
The Nerdy Engineer, but how long it is going to take Elon to make the model S/X batteries in the gigafactory? He needs to get those cars refined before hyping up the model Y and Tesla Semi. He has a car that works, so just need to make it cheaper as the $7500 tax incentives go away. But those who recently paid big bucks for a 100 kWh battery will be upset if the same capacity next year is $20,000 cheaper. And they will be upset if they can buy a Model 3 P100D with ludicrous mode for $75,000 when the model S cost $140,000. It's going to be interesting to see what the fully loaded model 3 has once they add all the options Elon promised.
@imho7250
@imho7250 7 жыл бұрын
untilcomplete, making them fit is not the problem. They can make it fit if the cost is low enough. They can stack the batteries in top of each other and raise the floor 4" and suddenly you have a model Y. The main point is about the price. Tesla already designed the model 3 to hold 75 kWh in batteries, that 15-20 kWh increase over the base model's battery should only cost $4000, not $10,000 people are estimating.
@imho7250
@imho7250 7 жыл бұрын
untilcomplete, $10,000 is what many people are estimating, which I think is way too high, they based it on the model S and X upgrade cost. Of course Elon could just tell everyone what it will cost, but noooooo.
@imho7250
@imho7250 7 жыл бұрын
untilcomplete, you are over complicating things. The EV has been around for over 100 years. GM had some prototypes using AC motors and solid state inverters back in 1964. The problem has always been the battery, and still is the battery. But people have been making EVs for many years with 6V golf cart batteries that weighed more and took up more space than batteries made from 18650 or 2070 cells. The battery technology still isn't ideal, which is why we aren't making many electric cars, but the main problem is the price. And I'm sure if Tesla can't figure out how to put more batteries in their, another manufacturer will. We just need to wait until there are more salvaged Tesla drive units and batteries.

I had a model s loaner for a week and was so happy to be back in my X. With that said, I think the self presenting door is the most valuable feature in an already overpriced package. If they allowed a software unlock for the self presenting doors I can see way less people opting for the PUP.

I agree, I'm almost in the market for a Model X and have been for quite a while, with the change it made it though for me a bit easier to justify to get the premium sound package, which was the only thing I'd have (possibly) left out... now I don't have a choice and have to get it, as part of the PUP... oh well - but hey, at least I can justify it more easily, because the price for all those together was reduced! But for those who are really having to "count their pennies", it's for sure is a bummer that they don't have anymore the control of the different things. Although I have to say, for those people there are always the certified pre-owned (and privately sold) Teslas, so I think those people can still find exactly (or very close to) what they are looking for, even cheaper than ordering a new Tesla. Now, my thought on why exactly the PUP was created, I think (also in terms of timing) this has to do with that it allows them to streamline / simplify the assembly quite a bit, freeing up resources (esp. human ones) for the Model 3 production. Although it's just an assumption of mine, I think it makes (again, due to the timing) a lot of sense...

Excellent video. Really liked it. The only place I'd beg to differ with you is the premium audio upgrade. If you are someone who likes music and likes to listen to their music properly and whose life sort of revolves around music in any way then PLEASE get yourself the premium audio upgrade. In order to save some money I forwent the option. While I love my Model S 75D recently it had to go into the shop for a minor repair and Tesla gave me a loaner. The loaner had a premium audio system and MANNNNNN the difference is significant. While I am very happy with my non-premium audio system and it solves the music listening purpose really, really well. But if you appreciate music and love exploring different genres and get into your music then hands down the premium audio is a no-brainer for you. The difference in audio quality especially with the Dolby Surround turned on, is night and day.

+Jim Kelly ahh, I bet it's the speed. Since the Model X is taller, you take a bigger hit the faster you drive. I remember seeing the EPA city/highway test data, and the Model X is significantly less efficient at highway speeds. If you're willing to slow down to 70 or even 65mph, you should see a substantial increase in your range. It's mostly a matter of if you'd rather spend more time driving or more time charging. With the current Supercharger speeds, you don't really save much time by driving faster since you just have to charge for longer. Once the V3 Superchargers come out and can charge in 5 minutes, then driving faster will save you an equivalent amount of time as it does in a gasoline car.

This lines up exactly with my thinking. I didn't get the PUP because the HEPA will be available after purchase, and self presenting is software limited and may be available separately at some point in the future. Similar thinking with self driving. You're probably better off saving and investing that money until the feature is fully vetted and available.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+Jason Monma a few months ago, Tesla added the ability to double click the key fob to open the driver's door. I'm not sure if this is limited to the PUP or not. If this works without the PUP, that would be pretty cool. It's not as magical as a self presenting door, but it's still pretty neat. After the drivers door is open, you can double click a second time to open the passenger door.
@pavelsunny1
@pavelsunny1 7 жыл бұрын
Can anyone confirm that the doors hardware is the same with and without PUP? Self-presenting driver door is cool, but I can live without it. However, some features are more important for me: 1) Soft-closer doors 2) One push button door opening 3) Automatically closing the driver door when press breaks 4) Remote control opening of driver and front passenger doors Can anyone who owns Model X without PUP confirms if any of these features still works?
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+Pavel Glavinov the door hardware is the same. And you get the first three features you listed. However, from what I read online, it sounds like the double click to open the driver and passenger doors does not work without the PUP. It's a software limitation that Tesla imposes to help make the PUP have more features than the non PUP.

+JD Taylor thanks! Regarding the 7 seater, I imagine that the storage capacity should be similar. I think the 5 seater will still have more because it has a second under floor compartment (where the 3rd row seats are). But I think for hauling large stuff, the new 7 seater should be able to fit the same size items as the 5 seater. It'll be very interesting to see how they enable access to the 3rd row with the new middle row configuration.

However, I do see the 72 amp charger as a dealer installed option on the online Tesla store. Congrats! What color seats did you end up getting? The blue with white looks really sharp. I didn't end up getting any paint protection. I couldn't justify spending a couple thousand dollars or more on Xpel or another clear wrap to protect the paint. Xpel seems to be the most popular protective wrap that Tesla owners get. If you end up getting a wrap, don't do a partial wrap on the hood. The seam collects dust/dirt and looks pretty bad.

Nice! I personally think the decision should be between the Model X and the 3, not the S. The Model 3 is so similar to the Model S, and it has some newer stuff that the S still doesn't have (landscape screen, new air vents, different battery cells so it supercharges faster, etc). I still think the X is the best car money can buy. But the value of the Model 3 makes it very hard to ignore! You won't be disappointed in any of them. Let me know which one you end up going with, or if you have any more questions. I'm happy to help!

@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 6 жыл бұрын
I think the EPA rated range is less than that. Maybe you're referring to the EU range? The EPA range is fairly accurate. But you're right, rain and snow definitely reduce your range. The same thing happens in a gasoline car, but most people driving gasoline cars don't really know what their range is or how many MPG they're getting. Speed also affects your range. If you go 60 MPH, you'll exceed the rated range. But if you drive 80 MPH, you'll fall short even under ideal conditions. The good news is if you're charging at home every night, then most of the time you'll only use a small fraction of your total range so it won't matter what the conditions are like.

Thanks. The maintenance and repair cost is easy, I've spent exactly $0. There were a couple of minor issues when I first got the Model X (it was a very early Model X before Tesla had worked out the production issues), and Tesla fixed everything under warranty. There's no oil changes or anything like that because it's fully electric. Brake pads last a lot longer too because of Regen too. My tires have about 25k miles on them, but still have tread life remaining. Overall, maintenance costs are much less in an EV than a gasoline car. Hope that helps!

I feel that saying that the 75D is only good for short trips and comute to work does not account for location. Like here in Norway where the supercharger network is really good. You can drive as long as you want. Seems to me that it's really good in the states now too, but of course if you live in Australia your point would be more valid. But then again the 100D is probably not enough there either.

Hi Brett, thanks for the video. I just placed an order for my X100D. I got black (no upcharge for the color), 5 passenger cloth, again no upcharge for the interior, standard 20" wheels, premium upgrade-I waffled on this one-standard sound system, cold weather-I also live in Colorado and I agree, this is not a severe cold weather climate, the heated seats throughout and heated steering wheel are nice. I currently have those options on my Nissan Leaf. I also autopilot but without self driving. Trailer tow is a must as I haul things for my business so the ability to attach a small lightweight trailer on occasion is great. This eliminates the need for a pickup truck. Plus I bike so the bike rack option is nice. Of course air suspension and larger charger come in trailer tow and large battery configurations. So I like your recommendations a lot and mine will be configured exactly how I like it. Thanks for your videos.

@dsenbet

Hi Dale Cecil, I ordered X75D in early March and received my car on April 26. The best car I have ever driven, hands down. For my situation, the 75 battery was ample. However, the biggest mistake I made was the color. I thought I am not gonna spend $1-1.5k on paint and chose black. What a mistake!!! The paint is soft and prone to scratch. Just a light touch with your fingernails creates a scratch. In addition, when you wash it, it will stay clean for about 5 minutes. It drove me crazy, I wanted to get it repainted (red or pearl white). The Tesla approved body shop in Denver reluctantly quoted me $20k+ (they didn't want to do it even for that price). Some people suggested to return and get another one (with the right color) and Tesla offered me $75k (three weeks after delivery). I spent $104k with taxes and registration. Finally, I got a solution - color wrap for about $2.5k. It's going to the shop next week. Long story short: unless you are absolutely sure about the black paint, just pay a little more and get something different (a paint color that doesn't require washing every 5 minutes :)). I wish someone told me this when I placed my order in March.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+Dawit Senbet I have heard that black is very difficult to keep clean. It's a shame Tesla discontinued the standard white to give people another "free" paint color option. Wrapping is a good solution though. And I've heard wrapping a black car is easier than a light colored car.
@dsenbet
@dsenbet 7 жыл бұрын
+The Nerdy Engineer, yes when wrapping a black car you don't need to worry about the hidden places (such as back of door) since the black color disappears into the background. If the paint is red or white, you might need to do door hinges and other hidden places, because, otherwise, it would be saying "hey, look at me back here!" (Especially red paint). The paint is so soft (why Elon, why?), you can't avoid scratching it no matter how careful you are. Obviously, regular car washes are out of question. Touch less is OK, as long as you do extra drying with towels to avoid the water spots. In the last 6 weeks of ownership, I washed it 10+ times. Looks good from far, but at 5 feet, you can see all the scratches and the "spider webs." I narrowed down my color choices to pearl white, red multi coat and black. Knowing what I know now, I would have paid $10k for the pearl white or the red. Now, I'm getting a red wrap. I have the white seats, worth it every penny. Didn't do the PUP upgrade. I did the FSD for two reasons. 1. I expect that we will see a departure of FSD from EAP sooner than later. I don't think we will go to the FSD in just one go. 2. I did a loan @1.49%, and in this case its better to just add the $3k into the loan now than paying $4k (or whatever the new pricing will be) later. If I paid cash, then it might have made economic sense not to add it now. Thank you, your video is very informative. Great job!

You're welcome. Yes, I actually have a video or two on driving in the snow. I lived in Colorado for a few years with the Model X, and it did great. Granted, Colorado doesn't get as much ice as the northeast, but everything I've read (and my personal experience) is that Teslas handle very well in snow and ice. If you get ice where you live, I'd highly recommend a set of nice winter tires. In Colorado, I just used all-season tires and they worked well for that climate.

The Nerdy Engineer I know now to leave the autonomous driving out so a very good point. So you're saying hardware is all there and when I'm ready to use it, then purchase it. I really would like the P but if the 100D is still quick and able to give the Tesla thrill, I'll forget about the performance version.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 жыл бұрын
+Chris Kepu yeah, I'd recommend test driving a normal 100D if you can. I think you'll find that it has more than enough acceleration and responsiveness. The 100D still goes 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds. But I think the cooler aspect of a Tesla is just how instant the acceleration is when you push the "gas" pedal. In gasoline cars there is a lag that after driving a Tesla will really annoy you. Yes, all Tesla's come with the full self driving Autopilot hardware regardless of whether you buy Autopilot or not. That way it's a simple software update to activate Enhanced Autopilot and Ful Self Driving. Tesla does charge more (I believe it's $1000 extra) if you active it after delivery. I definitely recommend buying at least the Enhanced Autopilot because you can enjoy those features right now, and it makes driving SOO much better.
