For all the Karens commenting on this video, this is only ONE example of guided reading. Guided reading is meant help students develop greater control over the reading process through the development of reading strategies which assist decoding and construct meaning. The teacher guides or ‘scaffolds’ their students as they read, talk and think their way through a text.

I am so confused. Are we supposed to have students take turns reading aloud during Guided Reading or not? And if I have Sped. kids how can I just have them whisper read to themselves if they can't read or are greatly deficient? I'm not trying to be rude or mean. I'm trying to be a good teacher. What I am is extremely frustrated. As a Resource Teacher I only have 30 minutes with my groups to boot. Any positive feedback and direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I agree with the other comments. This is by no means guided reading. The teacher critiques a student for not properly reading aloud punctuation, saying, "...it needs to sound like you’re talking, and you wouldn’t talk without stopping, right? So when I see you noticing those, um, periods and punctuation, Kinley, would you read?” WITHIN a run-on sentence where SHE didn't pronounce her own punctuation!

AWFUL!!! Totally agree with the postings critiquing this video. Just a big UGH! I am using this video as an example of what guided reading is NOT at a training I am facilitating this week. Guided reading is NOT choral reading or round robin reading.

HMH please remove this video. This is far from best practice. Students must be engaged with the text on their own while whisper reading or reading independently. GR should be about the students' learning, not listening to the teacher share her thoughts. The lesson objective is all over the place. There is no assessment related to student learning. A safe place is essential, but this is far from exemplar teaching.
