Hey man, awesome series! One question since you know your stuff around rigging: how would you approach facial hair (beard and moustache) on a stylized male character? Would you retopologize it all together with the face or retopo the face and facial hair separately and then "combine it" with rigging? I think the second way is the correct one but i would like to hear your opinion on this.
@Dikko4 жыл бұрын
Nah seperate meshes for the beard and mustache, then rig it up with the appropriate joints, depending on how fancy the beard is
@DonWippo12 жыл бұрын
One of the things that happen quickly when using Bezier Curves is that you end up placing way more strands than you need, adding noise to the result. This may result in a "noodly look", where each strand is visually seperate. (With normal transfers and so on there are ways to circumvent that depending on your shading) So personally I have gone away from using them for these reasons. However it is probably the fastest way to do hair and can give you nice results nonetheless. On that note I really like how you haven been emphasizing that different tools work for different purposes and different people throughout this entire series of tutorials.

DIKKO HALP!!! When I convert the Beziers to meshes, they come out with WAY too many polygons. Even when I lower the resolution, it simply reduces the number of faces wrapping *_around_* the circumference, but the faces running the length of the strand are many, many long, thin strips. Is there a way to reduce the polygons on the whole lock of hair? I hope that makes sense, otherwise I'll have to manually select and dissolve every second row of edges :'(

Hey there!! Love the series! Your work here is immensely appreciated! Can I ask one tiny thing though? Instead of defaulting to the hotkey solution first, could you please show where the menu / UI function is and then show the hotkey? I'm honestly terrible at Hotkey management when balancing a history of Maya, Cinema4D and Zbrush hotkeys. Thank you again!!
@Dikko4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Any tool I use hotkeys with are generally accessible on the left panel in the given mode I'm in. This series is geared toward the intermiate user, I work with the expectation that even if they don't use hotkeys, that they know where the appropriate buttons and menus are for any given function.

Hey Dikkoo, a little help here please? I have the hair done with particles in a duplicated scalp separated from the mesh, I didn't realize that I have Ngons and now every change I make in that mesh make the particles go everywhere randomly, is there a way to fix that? I was trying to check my character for rigging in Maximo but I can't export with the Ngons there.... 😣
@Dikko3 жыл бұрын
when building hair with particles it's a good idea to not duplicate the entire face, but only the scalp and parts where hair will be growing out of. My recommendation is to download the "Hair Tool" addon. This is my go-to addon when things get a little bit hairy (pun intended)! With this tool you should be able to convert the hair into curves, and seperate it from the mesh, then duplicate a new scalp, then rettach those curves to the new mesh. gumroad.com/l/hairtool

I use the exact same method but I keep encountering a bone heat weight failure everytime I try to rig the hair for animation. Any tips, please? EDIT: I just figured it out! Here's what helped me. hey dikko, have a general question to your hair modeling. is there no need to uv unwrap/retopology the hair? can i just put a material above it and use it for animation or game characters? hair is a mysterium for me
@Dikko Жыл бұрын
Hair still needs to be uv mapped if you have any hope in texturing it effectively. But hair can also be modeled in a bunch of ways depending on the style you’re hoping for, and if you just need a flat colour for the hair with no contouring you wouldn’t really need to worry about texturing. So basically it’s dependent on the direction you’re going for

Yeah, no, seriously, poly modelling imo is more preferable to particle systems. That is a completely different beast both in terms of the human dealing with it and the computer: my computer was making a ruddy little noise whenever I loaded hair particle systems, evenewhen I tried to use less computationally demanding details while still maintaining style. Also a tip for y'all when using poly modelling for hair: when using Bezier curves to create individual strands, attach the origin of the object to the root and turn on snapping to faces. And I also suggest to try blocking out hair with LINKED DUPLICATES for strands who'll use similar circumferences; y'all can then stylize them later by converting them into one mesh and sculpting it. There really are hundreds of ways to create hair!
