I love this video so much. It makes me feel child-like joy. Ever since I met with Ben Eater so many months ago (end of last year) I couldn't wait until January when the birds would flock back to my area. This is one of those videos that goes together in your head LONG before you ever get a chance to make it. It was kind of fun to have a mental note "wait for the birds to come to town so I can shoot footage for the Boids video." Also, you might find this interesting.... This video was never supposed to happen. I asked Ben to make the OODA loop simulation for me for the beginning of the disinformation series video almost a year and a half ago. He created the Boids simulation as a part of his exploration phase for that project. Thank you so much for Supporting Smarter Every Day on Patreon (www.patreon.com/smartereveryday). I really appreciate your help making these videos. I understand you do not have to support me and my family, but you choose to anyway, and for that I am grateful. Regards, Destin

They have developed sophisticated mechanisms to avoid collisions. It's really fascinating, and if you think about it, they can only move in two dimensions, so they really have a problem with collisions if they don't take extra precautions. And it leads to all kinds of higher order emergent phenomena, like traffic.

Suggestion: Setup three cameras with a certain number of common reference points in the shorts. Sync the timing of the cameras properly. Then triangulate the position of each bird to find their position with time in 3D. You can then fit Boids to the birds' positions.

Haha, yes
@rafetizer
@rafetizer 3 жыл бұрын
It's a two-fold advantage. Cars are streamlined, and a freshly cleaned car even more so. The birds get a nice smooth, high speed lift boost from flying relatively close to vehicles, and it was only a matter of time before they figured out that dropping weight here was worth even more than normal. Hence the pooping.

@@dylankempthorne True, but the way KZbin handles bitrate is also tied to what resolution option you pick in the player (higher resolution option opens up a higher bitrate limit on KZbin's end, which is where the "compression" comes from, with lower bitrate being more compressed, although KZbin doesn't let you know this super clearly ahead of time.)

I wouldn't call flight trivial. It's one of the most fascinating things evolution has given the world, and is the most difficult mode of transportation to pull off. From hollow bones, to certain size wing spans, wing shape, feather orientation and movement, flight patterns. But I agree, that we should encourage this type of curiosity. Get outside (well maybe in a month or 2 lol) and look at nature and how it works.

I've read this paper once, I can't remember the name to tell you though, about the movements of flamingos when they are on the ground. It's like when one sees danger, it moves away from it, and the one next to it tends to just follow the first one (left, right, back, up) if the first one moves harshly, eventhough the second bird does not see any danger. Doing so, the second bird would be safe, whereas if it stooped to look for what's scaring the first one, it could get eaten without knowing where it came from. Then, the same behavior of following the previous one would be repeated by the third, second, third flaming and so on.

Starlings form murmurations during migration. They roost without nests during that time. In summer, though, the adults will nest and raise one or two rounds of nestlings. During that season they will often nest near other starlings, but in much smaller colonies than the migration murmuration. We had a family nest in the corner of our roof last summer. The funniest part of that was our peafowl. One of our young peacocks was very curious about the nest, and he would occasionally poke his head into the area where they were nesting. Momma starling DID NOT APPROVE 😂 Watching a little starling tell off a peacock easily 100xs her size, and watching him sheepishly back off, was PRICELESS!💜💜💜😂

"Each bird is making decisions based on math." But isn't it quite the opposite? Maths is used to *describe* the behavior of birds (or nature in general) and not vice versa... or am I missing something?

Think it's a bit of a chicken or the egg problem... There are calculations going on in its head (maybe not an equation for an exact number) but a am I to close? Yes or no. Am I too far? Yes or no. And, am I in the flow? Yes or no. With actions to correct for that. That makes more sense to me atleast.

Hey Dustin love the channel. I think the main reason the bigger birds do not fly in tight formation like the smaller birds is because they have no predators. The same is true in the ocean, you will not find larger fish swimming in formation like sardines for example. In the sky the Hawk is a small birds main predator and in order to survive attacks from any direction they ball up and play a numbers game. So the point is I do not think it is the birds body build preventing such behavior but rather the fact that they are to large to attack and take down. Anyway keep up the good work I truly enjoy your videos.

It's the mechanical keyboard wankers. People act like there's some big difference. Some of them wankoff super hard to mechanical keyboards. Building keyboards with individual switches, disassembling switches and replacing springs and lube, worrying about whether one switch is rated for 10M actuations vs another with 12M actuations, or arguing with each other about how a 6 gram actuation force is better than a 9 gram. It's one of the most elitest, toxic, communities.
