Modeling Realistic Shoreline Details | River Road - Vlog #87

Adding Shore Line Details make a River Bank or Lake Side stand out. This short tutorial demonstrates how I model stumps and snags in HO (1/87) scale. This method works for any scale and is suitable for the beginner as well, because almost anything goes.

I’ve had good results with golden crackle paste directly over the sawdust/matte medium mix instead of a second layer of MM.

Welcome aboard! Great question. I find the Liquitex (Professional) to be of such good quality that I can thin down to 50/50 and use it with confidence. After using it you will decide what works best. Sometimes I just make sure the brush is always wet and then use full strength matte medium.

I will have to try this technique when there is an opportunity. It may be useful for larger items, but with N scale I'm guessing using natural materials still may be required for some smaller items.

Absolutely use natural materials for sure. N scale is a challenge for sure. I would model in N except my eyes grow dim. ;-) Cheers.

Do you take the tide into consideration when placing this debris , or just follow the photographs ? I ask because you may not be modeling from photos for any number of reasons.

Yes I do, but the tide is relative to many other factors in the model - what came first, the chicken or the egg kind of dilemma. Furthermore, it was the track height road bed that determined the Barge slip position, which was reinforced by a chosen tide line. The tide line was determined last once I figured out the height and exposed piles on the Barge Approach. It was all very methodical and unorthodox like most things are with model railroad scenery elevations and composition. It took a lot of thought and fore-planning as I was building the Barge slip while making sure the water substrate would not elevate it above grade if that makes sense. Once the Tide line was established I just laid in the shoreline debris, some buried in sand, some newer in deposit, etc. ;-) Cheers.

@@bobainsworth5057 The water level relative to the Barge Slip piles (below the girders) dictated the whole tide line across the shore on section one. ;-)
