The lack of water troughs on the SR lead to some unusual locomotive-tender combination during the 1948 Locomotive Exchange Trials both on and off the ex-SR metals. The LMS locomotives were paired with ex-WD tenders and the ex-SR locomotives were paired with ex-LMS tenders with water scoops for running off their home territory.

In some busier locations you could find several water tanks for the refilling of the troughs.
