It's a shame that the costs have sky rocketed for model kits and supplies. When I was a kid my dad would take me to Metzlers' hobby shop on the east side of Indy and for a couple of bucks we would pick up a cool model car. I'm concerned that if the industry doesn't figure out how to make their products more affordable the hobby will go the way of the Dodo bird. Such a wonderful hobby shouldn't be cost prohibitive.

It is unfortunate, but that is where the market is. Kids aren't really building many models anymore, so companies are aiming more to the adult market who demand more detailed and accurate models. This means more expensive tooling and extras like photo etch and resin parts. I also suspect economies of scale may also be an issue due to lesser volume of kit sales, but I have no numbers to back up that claim.

Thanks for the insight. While I'm at it, why do some modelers not put the mirrors on their cars? I've seen models that I know include side view and rear view mirrors but they're omitted on the finished product. The result is very extensive detailing but no mirrors.
