Edit: just realized that the figures Jazza got look very poor in quality and the box is missing the holographic logo, those are definitely counterfeit, there are LOTS of counterfeits floating around and their boxes look identical to the real ones, so be very careful! I used to have one, it was very expensive, then I started to use Clipstudio's 3D body for reference so I stopped using my Body-chan, I gave it to a friend who wanted to learn. Nowadays I don't worry about anatomy anymore and I just draw following my heart, sometimes my stuff turns out looking better than if I had a model, sometimes it looks worse.

I have and use both. Ironically the female is less flexible compared to the bulky male model. And judging by how extremely fragile your figures (especially the female) look, I'm not sure if they're the 'authentic' ones as there have been loads of bootlegs out there. I usually only use them when drawing characters in tough camera angles but they do the job quite fine. SH Figurearts did release some updated versions with supposedly better joints and more defined proportions, as well as more weapons/props, but they're hard to find in the international market.
@goro54795 жыл бұрын
@MadmanWithPie Im really glad I preordered mine online when they were first released back then. I really wanted to get the updated versions but I just cant trust online sellers nowadays because of all the bootlegs. Especially not from some random ad on intsagram.

@LadyChickadeeful5 жыл бұрын
From what it looks to be the ‘body-kun’ website, it looks to be the official one. The reason why the price is 40 is because of a sale that ends in a few hours. They even have these limited edition ‘world tour figures’ of body/Chan-Kun painted with some symbols I can’t make out on them.
@goro54795 жыл бұрын
@@LadyChickadeeful I checked the site and I have to say that the authenticity if any of these figures are very sketchy. The chibi fig is definitely a knockoff since it has a figma stand (the body-kun/chan line is made by bandai tamashii nations). I have no way of telling if the other two are legit or not from the video but they seem to do what there supposed do and I guess that's fine enough if you aren't picky on things like that. Then again, if theyre selling cheap knockoffs for the price of an authentic one, that theres a different problem. Edit: After comparing the boxes, the ones jazza has are definitely bootlegs.

For the young starting artists I've gifted these too, I had them pose them, photograph, then load into their sketchbook, or such apps, then set a new layer to practice drawing in a trace process; setting light angles to study shadows, etc. in the photo step. It does help them with repetition to visualize angles, etc. On occasion, I myself do the same when I need a specific problematic pose of a rider on a horse. I also find these figures equally useful in miniature designs (dollhouses/vignettes)...the are perfect to lay with my designs sketches for furniture, layouts, etc when I'm drafting plans for building (ie scratch built prayer kneelers for a chapel scene). I find them very handy, thinking outside of the box, quite often.

Hi Jazza, I actually have the exact same ones you bought. I do agree with you with your cons as i felt the same way. I actually use bluTac to hold them in place, I actually rarely use the stands that they came with because most of my positions are on a surface. I've found that using a little bit of bluTac actually makes these figurines VERY useful and it's a lot more fun when you can move them about as if they were action figures. I also have super glued some of the joints together (Ones like the wrists as on the female the wrist split) so Glueing them really helps them become more sturdy and you can use them more aggressively. I actually don't use them as often as I should, I typically just play around with them like they were toys haha, but I typically use them for reference once or twice every couple of weeks as it is helpful when you cant find a good reference on google, etc. I hope this comment helped. I love your channel and you inspire me greatly! - BW

I got those exact figures a little over a year ago on Christmas of 2017 (Excluding the Chibi, which I did not even know existed until I watched this) I can certainly agree that the male figurine does seem to be more posable and premium over all. Such as how the female figurine only has the regular ball joints instead of being fully sculpted shoulders in sockets like the male figurine has. I do use them both though, mainly because I'm not very good with human anatomy and I don't feel like trying to do it based off of nothing and then making it look terrible.

I'm pretty sure they are all bootlegged versions based only on the fact that they were like 20 dollars each, and they have some small manufacturing defects that I have noticed which can sometimes inhibit the poses I try to make with them. BUT. With that said, I have had a lot of fun using these figures for drawing references. I've had them for a couple months now, I carry them around with me all the time in my art bag, and I use them almost constantly for my art. I just purchased the original Body Chan to complete the set and to have another female body type.

I bought these exact models a few months back, I saw right away that the ones you received were much more flimsy than the ones I got. Perhaps it’s a manufacture problem. The models I received were very strong and firmly held poses with ease. I was fortunate enough to purchase both male and female models during a huge sale and for both for half price of one model. So it was definitely worth the buy. However, my only gripe were the hands and switching to others. The ball joint on the wrist was a little stingy and would sometimes seem like it would break or snap off unless I was very careful. Thankfully none have broken to this day, but overall a very nice buy for any aspiring artist in need of a little aid of perspective and overall poses/posture.

Hello! I own these figures, also. (Not the chibi one, though.) Cons: I did find a lot of the same issues. Some of the hands did not fit on the wrist joints. The lack of symmetry in the hands provided bothered me, also. I didn't have any loose joints on the figures, instead my joints seemed a bit inflexible. Overall, it just seems like their molding is inconsistent, some too large and some too small. For the price, you would think their products would be of a higher quality, not just a better design. The one loose join I had was actually on the stand. It doesn't support the figure's weight, preventing any mid air poses. Pros: On the other hand, as someone with very little experience drawing people, the light and shadow are incredibly helpful for me. Being able to position a light source and see how the light would fall is very helpful for me. Of course the pros you mentioned are also applicable (such as proportions). My background: I consider myself a "beginning" artist. I'm two and a half years in but scattered over many disciplines, while the most time is in drawing. I haven't done a whole lot outside of academic assignments, so I have the most experience with still life and drawing from photo references, where you don't really have to think about things like proportions or how the light may fall, as they are right in front of you to look at. I am coming out of my "get it down accurately" stage and moving into my "notice where the details/highlights/shadows/etc are and remember so you can pull the memory for reference" stage. I'm still building my mental repertoire, so having these references are good for someone like me. Thanks for all the great content, Jazza. It inspires me to keep pushing forward with what I love to do, and to keep experimenting with different mediums and techniques, no matter how silly they may seem. You're helping me get my creativity back. :)

Thank you for doing this! I have thought about buying these, but the reviews - on the very same online shop entry! - range from half-stars to five-stars, and I really wasn't sure what to expect. This is a fair and honest assessment, and it gives me something to think about. I do have two suggestions. One, for poses where you don't have the "other" hand, you can take a picture and use an editing program to mirror it for an easy work-around. Second, I have used Mattel's Made-to-Move Barbies as a drawing reference for the female figure, and I like them. The dolls are larger than these figures appear to be, which makes them easier to manipulate, and they can hold a pose fairly well. The downsides are that they aren't quite as thoroughly articulated as these figures, there is no invisible stand to hold them in place (though you can buy stands or lay them down in the pose you want, to good effect), and they don't have interchangeable hands. The dolls run about $15 here in the USA, so they're not super-expensive, which is nice. I am hoping that Mattel will eventually create a Made-to-Move Ken doll as well, since the male figure is the one I struggle most with.

I have both models and I have to say I haven't used them very often... Only occasions are when I'm confused about perspective and foreshortening or some interactions, other than that, I can safely say I prefer using reference from the internet, books or just sketching it out

I actually started using posing softwares like Daz Studio for reference images. Just works so much better.

Honestly they are great if you wanna make custom figures with a blank buck, youre possibly dealing with a bootleg as they are heavily faked, the plastic is usually very high quality and they're just what tamashii used as displays for their ground or fireball accessories

My mum bought both body kun and body chan at a flea market for 50 cents. It has everything except the stand 😭 All I can do for now is just hold the rig in one hand and drag with the other. Some wrist/hands seem a little tight, so I have to carve out a tiny bit to make it fit. Also, for body kun neck sticks out a bit too much

Seems like they would also be good at determining shadows also

I got "Design Doll" which is similar, well the basics are anime-ish but it can be changed to more real proportions too. with 3D models and a lot of possibilities. Giving input to the maker was hard though, since they only speak japanese.

I bought a body chan ages ago, albeit a very dark grey version that did not have the loose joints issue. Its handy but i find i use my 3d models for pose references more than anything else.

I got one (boy) and even if it came out way smaller and well...junk-ier than I expected, I learned a lot from seeing it every day on my desk. By eyes and brain got used to the proportions and now I draw way better...and, bonus!, they are fun to display in weird positions. Like playmobiles. Or legos. For artists. There.

Most of the figures are knockoffs. Make sure to buy them off of BodyKun or SHFiguarts’ websites for the real figures
@lis86735 жыл бұрын
These are really cool! I think they would also be really nice for beginning artists that are still trying to get the hang of things. It looks like these things would offer really nice practice! You could also use these things to practice shadows because of their 3D dynamic!

I'm not sure if Jazza is an expert in poses... Review itself was pretty good, but poses and photos...

He said himself the drawing were rough. Check out most all of his other videos to see him do amazing finished pieces. Don't judge someone before you really know them.

Armchair Critic he was trying to use props, and remember, it was harder to pose them. They were loose so he had to do a pose the best he can, and like I said, he tried to use as many props as possible. I think the last pose was really good though.
@abudgie69095 жыл бұрын
Armchair Critic they look stiff because the figures didn’t accommodate what he tried to do. His other works tend to look a lot better in this aspect. His artworks aren’t amazing, but he is really good at poses, so take the stiffness of these drawings as an indicator of the figures’ quality.

I don't have these, I have the SHF Figure ones, and what I do with mine is put them in a pose, then draw it multiple times from different angles and with different light directions. Yes, this can be done with free posing apps, but I've never found one that wasn't clunky and didn't take me a long time to get it the way I want, so these are just easier. Also, I like to listen to KZbin when I draw, so I cant have an app open on my phone.

I actually got my older brother one of those cheap wooden figures for Christmas. I didn’t even know these existed until I saw this video. If I had known about these figures, I would have gotten one of these for my brother instead.
@gaiadarkstar5864 жыл бұрын
I do have the wooden figure and have used it a few times but once I found Daz3d I use that all the time. It is a FREE program were you can use free 3d models and pose them in any way you want and take a pic/screenshot and use that as reference They have tons of free and paid resources to use including hair props poses. I did not need to use any videos to figure out how to use you just find a model then a pose tweak it with a mouse and move the camera to the angle you want and take a shot. Again it is completely free and you can save poses to use again later.

God bless Clip Studio for they'r 3D Moddeling funktion honestly makes things much easier because u can already draw ON the figurine, undo it if you shaped something on those wiggely figurines in the wrong position and first and foremost u don't have to make RL space in your Room to store em but instead have a little Folder on your PC to save every Pose u made on. AMEN

As someone who makes webtoons, these are very useful. Sometimes I have to draw an intricate scene, or a pose in deep perspective (god knows I suck at perspective drawing) and I don’t have time to waste struggling since I have to finish my chapter, and this is when they come in handy. I pose them, take pictures, transfer them to my drawing software as reference layers, and sketch over them, it’s way quicker. Though Body-chan’s proportions are a bit off and need to be adjusted every time, they’re really helpful, especially to digital artists.

I found some free 3d rigged models of things like this years ago. I use it because I SUCK at doing the rough proportion sketching from imagination (the simple geometric stuff). After importing into blender (open source 3d modelling / animation software) I found it a very useful reference that you can manipulate (had to fix some small issues with the rig but it was nothing big). You can even use it to animate movement if you are doing a traditional / digital hybrid animation and you want to test out movement without having to actually draw it.
