This simplicity of this technique belies the end results, which is the ability to cover large amounts of rock structure with something realistic and uniform. I like how simply changing the colors can transform the rocks from a sedimentary type (usually light in color), to an igneous rock typified by dark granite. With the addition of some splattering using an airbrush, a flicked paint brush, or Krylon's Make It Stone spray paint to mimic the lighter flakes often seen in granite, or the subtle layering of various shades to portray deposits over time of sediments in sedimentary rocks, one can take the techniques in this clip, further. Currently, I see no other technique that offers a better base on to which one can develop the look of either type of rock. Kudos, Woodland Scenics.

Hi, I bought the spray bottle with a combo package. Come to learn that there is a mist option with the nozzle that is able to be done by removing a cap on the nozzle. I think that many people are not aware of that, nor is the team that made the video apparently aware of the mist function. The mist would be better than a strong stream that splashes so much she has to shield herself from it splashing up. Why not use a nozzle that is more fully adjustable instead of just off, or on as mist or stream? See minute 4:24 of video.

Yes for the second rock colored, Kim used only stone gray and black. If you are asking about the third rock on the board, that particular rock was colored using black only, according to the following steps. 1. Three layers of Black Pigment diluted 1:16 letting it dry slightly between each coat. 2. Spray with Scenic Cement. Let dry. 3. Another layer of Black Pigment diluted 1:16 to accent the cracks and crevices. Happy Modeling!

Excellent tutorial! I'm new to modeling and was wondering if you can mix the pigments together to create unique colors? Also, I like the look of the rocks when being colored, but when dry they don't seem to be as vibrant. Can you use a matte or satin varnish to bring out some life in them?

Hello! After looking at pictures of the Kenai Mountains, we think that using Slate Gray (C1215), Stone Gray (C1218), and Black (C1220) Earth Colors™ Liquid Pigments will replicate the colors of the mountains well. To replicate the snow on the mountains, use Soft Flake Snow (SN140) or Flex Paste (C1205). I hope that helps! Happy modeling.

Hello! We're glad you liked the video. Earth Colors Liquid Pigment works by staining the rock surface. Pigments are easily absorbed into castings because plaster is highly porous. Spraying with Scenic Cement (S191) first seals the surface of the rock and inhibits the pigments from being absorbed. Happy modeling!

Why do you spray it with scenic cement? Why use a adhesive as a sealer? Is because of the finish? Matte or gloss shine? I assume sealing it before the dominant color keeps it from soaking in and blending in with the base layers? Would Elmer's glue and water mix be about the same? I have slot of that already mixed.. Thank
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 4 жыл бұрын
Scenic Cement both seals the colors in place and encourages the Dominant Black Wash to seep into the cracks and crevices of the rock. When it concentrates in the cracks and crevices, the realism is enhanced. Scenic Cement is specially formulated and we know it works for this purpose. We cannot comment on your mixture because we do not know how it will react with our products.

@@ModelSceneryExpert thanks. That's helpful. I have a bottle ordered and awaiting delivery. TIP- use black weathering powder to darken the cracks even more FYI- clear spray paint and or white glue/water mix WILL NOT substitute for scenic cement. I've tried it. It seals the casting completely - not allowing the pigment to soak in. Matte clear spray paint does work good for a final sealer.

+Woodland Scenics - Once you put the paint on top of the foam, it becomes sealed and will not accept the Pigments. We have not tested the Earth Color Liquid Pigments directly applied to the balsa foam, so we don't know how that will work. However, if you intended to cover the foam directly with plaster or Plaster Cloth as a base, then that would be a sufficient base on which to apply the Pigments. Hope this answers your question.

You can try the water colors, but we don’t think the results will be the same as what you saw on the video. Our Liquid Pigments are not paint and do not contain binders. They are actually liquid pigment that stain the castings, not paint it. If you have some spare castings, we would recommend you do some testing. If it looks satisfactory to you, then go for it! Happy Modeling!

Scenic Cement is an excellent sealer and can tolerate a fair amount water spray. However, it will not withstand immersion or a constant water spray. If we better understood what you are wanting to accomplish, we could more thoroughly answer your question. Hope this helps!

It appears that you left some areas white. They did not get covered in your application of the secondary and the primary cover, but at the end they appeared covered. Question: Do you leave a few small areas unpigmented or do you make sure all of the white surfaces have been pigmented before applying scenic cement?

Thanks! It seems strange that that rock looks a lighter color than the other 2 rocks in the display, when it’s made with only black pigment. Maybe because the rock itself is white? I’m trying for a lighter gray color rock near a mountain top if you have any suggestions. Thanks again.

Many use Stone Gray for that. We also have a Slate Gray and Concrete. We recommend making test rocks before doing the finished version. Using different dilutions for more transparent vs opaque colors gives different effects. You can figure out the combination that will work best for you.

How do the grey tones look when applied to tan coloured mold-a-scene plaster?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 3 жыл бұрын
Slate Grey Earth Colors Liquid Pigment will look grey when applied to Mold-A-Scene. You will not see the tan color of the Mold-A-Scene. The Pigment will cover up the tan color, but it may not be as dark of a grey as compared to Pigment applied to a bright white plaster. When colored, Mold-A-Scene’s sandy texture will still be visible and the result will be a granular appearance, like you would see on weathered limestone formations. If colored with earth tones, such as Raw or Burnt Umber, it will look more like sandstone.

Why do you spray Scenic Cement on the rock before you apply the black wash? Doesn't this just create another unnecessary step? Also, in the Scenery Manual, it says that once you seal with Scenic Cement, the rock won't accept washes. How did you get the black wash to be absorbed even after applying the first coating of Scenic Cement?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 11 жыл бұрын
In an effort to give modelers the most realistic look when modeling scenery, we are continually testing various methods for doing all kinds of modeling techniques...even the ones we have already recommended.The information in the video represents our most recent application recommendation. We feel that spraying the casting with Scenic Cement prior to the Black wash step accentuates the cracks & crevices, rather than the having the rock absorb the Black wash.

do you add pigment to water?
@ModelSceneryExpert

Pigments are diluted with water. This is explained at 0:48 to 1:10. The dilution ratios pop up at the minute mark.

IMHO I believe the scale of the rocks (molds) is too big for N scale. Not sure either if the painting technique will work for small feature rocks in N scale. But I'll find out soon.

Earth Colors Liquid Pigment (C1215-C1223) colors like stain. They are easily absorbed into porous surfaces, such as Plaster Cloth and Plaster-based products. We fully test our products for their designed use. Since we have not tested it on concrete manufactured stone, we cannot offer an opinion as to how it would perform.

Is there a combination out there that can model the "red cliffs" of Dawlish Warren?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 6 жыл бұрын
To create this rich red rock look, we recommend coloring the rocks all over with a light wash of Burnt Umber. In the patches where the rocks are less red, use a Stone Grey wash. The light Burnt Umber and Stone Grey washes would be considered the “secondary” washes. Let these dry. Then seal the colors in with Scenic Cement and let dry. Then, make another darker wash with Burnt Umber and coat the whole rock with it. This would be considered the “dominant” color wash. Let it dry. Seal it again with Scenic Cement. Keep applying the dark Burnt Umber wash, letting it dry and sealing it with Scenic Cement until the desired color is achieved.

Hey guys I'm sorry but I'm really lazy! I've been working on a diorama of a futuristic overgrown city with vines and bushes. Do you have a video that shows how to do vines or things that look as if it's overgrown on a rock or object? If so a link would be great thanks :)

Okay Mr. Lazy Megaspartan Bloks :-) We'd be glad to help you out. Check the following video. It is a great all round scenery video for building scenery from the beginning, but for your purposes...start at about 14:00. Matt will begin to talk about our product Foliage. You can see how he uses it both for ground cover and as a vine-like covering for rock faces. Keep in mind that any technique you use him using on a horizontal surface, you can use vertically also to landscape rock faces, bluffs, etc... Hope this helps and Happy Modeling! When the mixing directions on the liquid pigment state 1 part pigment, 16 parts water ratio. You will pick a certain measurement, like 1 ounce, then you would mix 1-ounce pigment to 16 ounces of water.

Plastic is not the intended use for the pigments and has not been tested. We cannot recommend this or say what will happen as a result. You can always do a test before committing it permanently to a project.

Did no one notice when she does stone grey colour 1 part pigment to 16 parts water that the two containers were not equal? When she increases water content into stone grey pigment (32 parts water) they are then equal. Jack
