Thank you for sharing how you did your riveting. Very interesting and informative. Well done. 👏👏👍😀

Yes the rivets make the model. Great job and one we all hate

Thank you I hope it wasn't too boring 😳

IS there a "right mood"? It is fabulous to see, but until now I had thought that the rivet holes in the aluminium smoke box were functional - ie holding two lumps of metal together; I am even more impressed at your attention to detail by riveting for an aesthetic effect ! Keep up the exceptional work :)

Good question lol it was a slog to do it but I love the results 😃

Fantastic job on rivetting If you find they leak you could always dip them in Foliac Graphite Steamseal To help to keep it sealed
@julias-shed15 күн бұрын
Thanks Paul I think they are pretty tight but I have some Steam Seal somewhere 😄

Great job on the rivets Julia. It makes such a difference to the appearance of the engine. I’ve hardly done any riveting in my workshop so far. When I started lessons in the metal workshop at school in 1959 we had to do some very basic things first, including riveting, and we were each literally given 1 rivet each. The horror if we had to ask for another one 🙀 Did I say happy days. Cheers Nobby

Two rivets!? We're not made of money Nobby 🤣 it was a slog but the results speak for themselves.

Hard work, but well worth the effort. It was the same in the woodwork class. If it needs 3 nails, that’s what you got. Bend one, you straighten it

I have had problems with aluminium furniture on the smoke box. The expansion rates are grater than the steel/brass/bronze parts and separate . Paint also does not take well to alloy.

The door ring will be held in place with high temperature silicone. 😄 I usually use good quality etch primer. Hopefully that will work.
@markmarson168515 күн бұрын
Why is the door ring not held in with the rivets
@julias-shed15 күн бұрын
Its easier to make the steam connections in the smokebox with the ring removed. 😄

Hello Julia, a great job; a dozen rivets at a time is OK, several dozen is not! I may have missed it, but how are you holding the smokebox front, with door, into the barrel ? I had thought it was going to be rivetted, but obviously not.
@julias-shed18 күн бұрын
Hundreds of rivets is next level Derek lol 🤣 smoke box ring is a friction fit and will be sealed with high temperature silicone eventually.

It is a well known fact that aluminium does NOT solder. The simplest way is the method I used on my 3.5" gauge Britannia and that is to shear the rivets to just a few thou longer than the thickness of the smoke box and then lightly rivet with a ball pain hammer remembering to use a proper indented protection anvil for not just the rivet head but the smoke box as well. The finish paint job will seal any tiny leaks. Or you could simply use brass for the smoke box NOT aluminium. Either way you don't need to solder the rivets. Rivet them.

Err did you actually watch all the video? it's about 30minutes of rivetting action 😄
@TheOwlman17 күн бұрын
How can riveting be such a boring job? Oh well, at least it is done. I like the solder paste idea, that is genius. Edit: Oh dear, lesson learned 😁 It was still worth a try.
@julias-shed17 күн бұрын
It works really well on brass I have a video using this method on a tender 😄 glad you found it err rivetting 🤣
@TheOwlman17 күн бұрын
@@julias-shed😁Take a look at the tender on Keith Appleton's Stirling single, then you will know how lightly you got off. I can only imagine that the maker of that item was in some sort of trance when it was finished. Happy new year.

Go careful with the iron rivets, aluminium and iron will sometimes react with each other . You've done a tidy job there though 😊
@julias-shed17 күн бұрын
We'll have to see if it causes any issues. I don't think it will be that wet in the smokebox so should be okay? 😄
@jean-louisfigureau636414 күн бұрын
good job , but I use a riveting clamp , it' better and quickest .
