Professor George Pattison examines a number of works in light of Baudelaire's definitive description of "the painter of modern life'', and considers the potential implications of such a definition on modern theological art.

I think, particularly since the two world wars, that Baudelaire's definitive description of "the painter of modern life'' misses the mark. In most cases "the painter of modern death" is much more apropos. In modern art there seems to be a preoccupation with death that was not there before the wars, certainly not since the middle ages, which was also, in many ways, a time of preoccupation with death, though they did not reject timelessness, beauty and representation.

"the tyranny of representation" Of course, representation is not any more tyrannical than gravity. It's one of the twin pillars upon which all art is built, the other being beauty. It seems that many modern artists have also found beauty to be "tyrannical" too, and have rejected it. In kicking over the two essential pillars in the name of freedom, they find themselves in the tyranny of the desert where no life grows. In truth an artist cannot avoid representation, for when he ignores the world around himself and applies paint to canvas (or other artistic process of his choice) he necessarily moves from extroversion to introversion (after all, inspiration must come from somewhere) and paints what comes from his soul, his emotions. Even the choice of process itself is governed by his emotional response to said process.

dlwatib - hey, I just met you and this is crazy, but here's my number. Call me maybe. Okay, I'm back to being serious now. Your thoughtfulness of the Arts is inspiring. Would you be interested in writing an Artist statement/short bio? I would commission you, payment would be settled before we started on anything. I've been a programmer for the last decade, but unfortunately I can't write code for 12hrs a day, let alone even 1hr. I was born with a hereditary spine disease which has progressively gotten worse, I've had non-stop stabbing pain for 18yrs 🙁 Since my first semester in design school I've been painting, and kept it up in the event something like this happened. I have 60-70 finished works and I'm getting everything ready for a polished premier into the US art world in seven months. Send me a message if you're interested. Thank you kindly, - John
