I think you do a damn good job with your mules, and I don't know much about pulling wood with animals but the little I do know came from my grand par and he often said that horses, mules and also even bullock teams, sometimes had psychological problems when they went to pull a load that was somewhat more stubborn or extra heavier then what they are were used too. So in other words it was mostly in their heads why they give up early.
