This past week were delighted by the arrival of the helicopter! We were on the schedule to have our corn fields sprayed and since the wind conditions were just right, they showed up and we got to watch the show!
I knew you might enjoy watching this as well, so we recorded it for you! See the helicopter spraying our corn fields here! Is such a cool thing to see innovation, technology and efficiency meet!
Running and operating a farm, involves so much more than just the farmer. Without technology and a serious team of scientists, chemists, developers, nutritionists, veterinarians, mechanics, suppliers, and our employees we could not do our jobs and efficient stewards of this precious earth we have been given to care for.
Careful planning, measuring, and safety have gone into preparing fields for planting and spraying. Yes, we use pesticides on our fields, but hear me out. In order to REDUCE the amount of pesticides we have to use on our fields, science and technology have allowed us to use a wide range of techniques to control weeds, insect, and disease pressure to our crops.
Pests can be weeds, insects, or diseases that limit a crop yield.
For weed control, we use herbicides, that target a specific weed group that has been identified by our crop and field crew.
We are able to practice reduced tillage largely because of advanced herbicide technology and crop traits. Reducing till/ no till helps decrease our carbon footprint here on the farm, along with other environmental benefits.
For insects, genetically modified crops with built in insect resistance have greatly reduced the need for insecticides. We also rotate our crops, which helps control insects that prosper in a certain environment.
Diseases in crops have been protected by the seed before we put it in the ground. If we have to apply anything at all it's only because a disease has been identified to have hit our yield potential.
Pest pressure in inevitable and we use pesticides only has responsible and efficient management of the land and water resources for both conventional and organic farmers.
If we were allowed our crops to be damaged by weeds, insects and diseased each year, there would be harmful implications not only to our food supply but also our food safety.
Also most of what you will see coming out of the helicopter sprayer is water that has diluted a small concentrate of fungicide, in this case.
