Modern High Capacity Boxcar! - Unboxing and Product Review of the Atlas HO Scale 7550 TTX Boxcar!
TTX Corporation started taking delivery of 7550 cubic foot high capacity boxcars from Gunderson in 2016, and have a fleet of over 4000 cars. These double plug door cars are similar to a series of single door cars built for BNSF in 2012.
The TTX 7550 cars are classed as XGH61B and have distinctive grid side panels.
These cars can be found throughout North America.
Dan has photographed these cars in real life, and some of that footage is included in the review!
As usual, Dan evaluates the model's packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.
If you're a fan of modern boxcars, freight trains, or just model trains in general, be sure to check out this review!

Aurora Miniatures did a run of these as well that seem to have sold well. The level of detail on them has been noted by many other reviewers to be higher than on the Atlas version to include air brake hoses, rotating end caps, and some additional free-standing small details.

One thing to note about the Aurora Miniatures yellow box cars, the plastic or paint is very transparent and doesn’t look great in person. I have seen a few and was surprised how odd they look

I appreciate your straight forward approach to your reviews. I don't model anything modern, just up to the late 50's with NO graffiti on rail cars. Cheers from eastern TN

Those orange squares might be impact indicators. We get them on our shipping container deliveries. They're adhesive stickers with ampules of liquid that indicated if the container sustained excessive impact during shipping. We have to inspect them before we will receive a shipment. If they are "tripped" we have right to refuse.
@DanielCortopassi

That's really interesting. I had no idea that something like that existed. My photo is from too far away to really make out a lot of detail on the orange squares, so I really wasn't sure what they were. Thanks so much for the info and for watching!

At the price point, and it being a Master Line, the roller bearings should rotate
@DanielCortopassi

A lot of cars in this price range have those. Some people seem to like them and some don't. I can understand wanting to have that, though, since you could get it with other brands. Thanks for watching!

Hey Dan. Nice review again. I like the car you did because it's an Atlas unit. I'm kinda sold to them. BUT, like you are, I'm desapointed that they put all details on except the air hoses ??? At this level of details and price as you mentioned, it's simply unacceptable. Air hoses are very important visible details as well as prototype couplers, brake wheels, ladders, end platform and uncoupling levers. As simple as that. It's even more strange that they've putted things barely noticeable but no air hoses ??? In a way, I'm not surprised by them. They're very good but not excellent ! Couplers... I also had the same problem with a NSC 5111 boxcar that has the same gearbox configuration. This is unacceptable too. It should be a lot easier to change couplers on any boxcar on the market. Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you liked the review. I was very puzzled by the lack of air hoses on this car, since it's got pretty much everything else, and it's not a cheap model. The coupler box design is worse, I think. I really wish they'd get away from designs like that. Thanks for watching!

@2:56 - is is the camera angle, or is the coupler on your Kadee height gauge drooping? Centerline of the shanks is higher than the knuckle.
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 5 ай бұрын
The knuckle might look slightly low, though that seems to be the nature of the beast with Kadees. The coupler shank itself is rigidly mounted in the height gauge. The couplers on the car were off by enough that it wouldn't change the outcome. Thanks for watching!

I have an old Bachmann PRR 40' Boxcar that I wanted to modernize as a model so it can run it properly on my DCC layout. The modernizing process is installing Kadee's metal couplers and 33" metal wheels. But my lord, that proofed to be very difficult as it had a plastic bar on both ends that bent the couplers in a very damaging and unrealistic way so, it's at stand still right now. I really wish manufacturers would stop using outdated or surprisingly difficult methods of installing trucks and the updated couplers on new models.
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 5 ай бұрын
I'm not familiar with the Bachmann car you described, but I know it can sometimes be difficult to change the couplers on some models. It would be nice if they would design the draft gear boxes so that the couplers could be changed more easily. Thanks for watching!

@@DanielCortopassi The car in question isn't new at all, I've had it since I was a kid. I mentioned it because I had initially thought manufacturers had stopped making difficult to access draft gear boxes but thanks to this video, Atlas apparently still does an outdated method for installing them on the car you reviewed in this video for an example.

Dyou have a source for HO scale buildings for layouts, train stations, churches, etc.?
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 5 ай бұрын
Not specifically. Some of the online retailers that sell trains also carry kits for structures. Some manufacturers also sell direct. If you have a hobby shop near you that can also be a good source. Good luck with your search. Thanks for watching!

Another new standard of my model review is like a typical college GPA system ; 4.0 is the highest. Any non conformance issues will result in a 0.5 point reduction. This car in my book would only receive a 2.0 (F).

I could tell those coupler heights on the unit was in non conformance status. That is an automatic failure in my book. No coupler guage required!!

I've had some Atlas boxcars in the past with funky draft gear box designs, but had higher hopes for this one since it's newer. I really don't understand the logic behind it. Thanks for watching!

@@DanielCortopassi there is no logic with atlas. It is a shame that cost of cars has risen and very little improvement to quality. They took over BLMA and didn't keep the high standards that company had.
