Modern Luxury House Design On The Steep Terrains With Breathtaking Coastal Views

The La Baranda urbanization, in El Sauzal, Tenerife, enjoys an exceptional landscape: the northern coast of the island, crowned by the imposing presence of Mount Teide, spreads out into the ocean. Furthermore, the plots have such a steep slope that the regulations, after some deplorable examples, require careful volumetric adaptation.
Thus, faced with the exciting panorama and the sharp topography, we began looking for a certain abstraction: manipulating the terrain with agricultural criteria, terracing the levels with retaining walls and “cultivating” the terraces with living spaces under strips of restored landscape. As the finishing touch and urban façade, a slight inclination of the upper deck allows the approach to the home to not pervert the experience.
And so, the only thing that can be seen when we get closer is a fragment of the forest, a garden of local species that defines a primordial position: the intention to alter the place as little as possible or, at least, the aspiration for a respectful coexistence of the new housing with what was there.
The rest of the decisions allude to the senses, combining the experience of the tours with the ritual of stolen or specifically framed views, energy efficiency (green roofs, cross ventilation) and the use of materials that allude to local memory, alternating walls of basalt strips with lattices - made of cuperized wood or concrete - and continuous pavements of polished cement or stone in the pool, a cool pool that seems like a natural fold in the territory.
The MaMa house, in short, is perceived as a staggered succession of walls climbing the slope with different degrees of permeability and diverse materiality. And on the ground floor, in their connection with the common spaces - where the house extends outwards - they dissolve, folding to become generous pergolas that provide shade and movement to an architecture that is as solid as it is discreet.
