I'm hopin' there'll be an actual book at the end of the vids. The vids are great for home, but a book is great for when you're at the club.

I'm excited for this series - proper Messer instruction in HEMA is indeed seldom found, I was considering even just making my own for the sake of "better than nothing." Thank you for the time and effort you've put into this for the rest of us who are passionate about Leckuechner's art.

Excellent, I am looking forward to this. And indeed. While I can spar most Sundays with my Langmesser. It is generally with opponents wielding e.g. a saber, an arming sword or even a basket-hilted broadsword. Which is still fun, but it is difficult to learn Messer specific techniques in these sparring sessions.

I got into hema because of your messer videos in the first place so I can't wait to see more.

terrific news for all the people that want to start messering around. I myself had problems with understanding sources. It's always easier to understand what's going on when there is a footage of the technique being performed. Love the idea, and judging by your fencing and content, I'm expecting a generation of great messer fencers coming into the game thanks to your contribution.

From what little I've looked into it, there seems to be quite a bit of variety in messers. Will your instruction be geared towards any specific types? Or is it intended to be completely general? If it's not clear what I'm talking about, I'm looking at illustrations of the Elmslie typology, and imagining that, for example a type 1a must surely be a bit different to use than a type 5b. The illustrations also seem to indicate that messers could be straight, curved, or curved _forward_, which I imagine must also make a difference. Granted, I have no experience using swords, so I might be overestimating the effects these differences would have.

This is an excellent question. The fencing I'll be describing is mostly geared to messers of reasonable length with a complete guard. Within that admittedly vague grouping, a lot of variation is possible. I'm trying to occupy a middle ground, so that rules out short Bauernwehre and Kriegsmessers, but in between almost anything will do. Very extreme curves may make certain actions more difficult, but not impossible. Same goes for dynamic properties. The intent is to disqualify as few types of messers as possible though.

Greetings! So much thanks for your enthusiasm for Messer! May I have your permission to put and translate this and future Modern Messer Manual videos into Chinese and publish them on a Chinese website called Bilibili(basically just our version of U2B), with of course your credit on.

having dabled a bit????? Seriously? Hans Heim and Alex Kiermayer (OCHS e.v - Germany) are giving lectures about Lecküchner Messer for the last 25 years - they made an amazing DVD which aged awesomely and is still avaible. Those two are still the go to guys, especially in Europe when it comes to Langes Messer. Dont get me wrong, I like your videos and your presenting of things, but this intro pissed me off quite a bit. Who ever is saying there is no proper Messer representation in HEMA is simply fo lazy to look around or go to events or, as I did it with the Dreynevent for the first 10 years and which is still running, but hosted by my collugues... start their own and invite the guys who think are giving you the content you want to see by yourself. please note, that if you start with a Messer teaching line - of which I am already exited to see - you will start standing next to and building on the knowledge of giants of this weapon.

Hi Harry, I think you may have misunderstood my intro a little bit, or I may have explained my origin story poorly. When I talk about people around me who had dabbled a bit, that's just that. In my local scene, some people had messers and read a few techniques and were willing to show me some stuff or challenge me to come up with my own ideas on those techniques. Nothing close to a full system though and they were not many. Travelling far was not really something that I could afford at the time. "Occasionally I had the opportunity to learn from someone who had already been devoting themselves to learning the Messer for a long time. And I cannot stress enough how important that was". Here I'm talking about people like Enzi and Jens Peter who taught workshops that were close enough for me to attend at the time. I was only lucky enough to meet Hans much later, but that was a very inspiring meeting as well. Even with Hans and Alex' work on making Lecküchner available, I still felt there was a lot to figure out for myself though, which means that I feel that at that time more material would have been beneficial. Since I hear from a lot of people being in the same situation, I felt that it might be a good idea to make this video series. I hope I managed to explain the thought behind all this a bit better. Cheers, Oskar
