I did one of these recently but then realized the retractable is pointless. Once you park there is no reason it needs to be retracted. The only reason to retract it is when you move the cars out and want to work in the garage. This is fine if you are working in garage with the door closed but if you want to open it, the ball will drop. So I undid the work I had just done (retractable ball) and instead put fish eye hooks on a out of the way spot of my work bench. My ball stays down all the time unless I want it out of the way, then I manually pull a carabiner clip down to another fish eye which raises both balls (wife's car and my car has one) up to freely work in garage. The retractable idea is really cool it's just not really serving any purpose. I recommend the manual version when you can actually move the balls out of the way when you need to work in garage. This solves all the issues (like kids playing with it, them in the way when door is open while working in garage or doing yard work etc.

That’s a clever design. What I like about the retractable is it tells me if the garage door is up or down. Obviously I could look in the mirror, but we’ve had a few times where it stopped 80% up and the ball would tell us that, but my limited view in the mirror shows the garage is fully open.

@@1ModernDayDad Makes sense! I think the retractable is cool for sure! Didn't mean to like be negative toward it that was more more for me as when I did it I realized it was pointless for me haha. But I didn't think about the garage open close thing but we always look in our mirror or camera plus the car will beep like mad (newer cars) if you put it in reverse when the door is closed. Great video none the less!

My kids play with the ball when the garage door is up because that's when they get their bikes

I had a solution for this, I made mine manually able to be pulled up when I want to work in garage with door open. I just pull them down with a carabiner hook and hook it to an eyelet. There are just two positioned, raised and lowered. Way better than a pointless automatic raising. (Trust me, I did the automatic first and then realized it is completely pointless. UNLESS you are working in garage with the door closed which most people don't do that.
