Sawyer and Aaron check out the Black Belt Standards put out by Scott Jedlinski of Modern Samurai Project. Both are running Glocks out of the AXIS Elite holsters.
www.modernsamu...
3 yards - Draw, 3 rounds a-zone, 2 rounds 3x5 head box - 2.00 seconds
7 yards - Draw, 1 round a-zone - 1.00 seconds
7 yards - Draw, 6 rounds a-zone - 2.00 seconds
25 yards - Draw, 1 round a-zone - 1.5 seconds
To earn the MSP Black Belt Patch you must pass these four standards in one of Scott's classes. They must be done in this order and consecutively.
All standards are from concealment. If not concealed, then the following will be added to your time:
Any holster no retention - Add .10 seconds.
(Time is 2.00 add .1 for total of 2.10)
ALS + SLS - Subtract .1
ALS Only - No extra time added

Great shooting guys. I pulled a Sawyer on my attempt in class and shot a .9 1 shot at the 7 but was just an inch wide. Clean the rest of the way. Walked away with a 3/4 baby black belt patch. Scott is definitely one of the best instructors I’ve ever trained with. Training with him hopefully twice next year, that black belt patch is top of my list to get next. Going for Donnovan’s standards next!

The hardest part for me is you test these at the very end of the day during his class. After 8 hours of shooting/learning you're gassed both mentally and physically. The most difficult to pass is the subsecond single at least in my experience.

Creating a whole new patch for people who couldn't pass the standard?! These standards are very challenging, and yes doing three out of four of them is still amazing, that being said, If that doesn't sound like a friggin participation trophy I don't know what does.

like you said, 3/4 is still amazing, shooting in class, on the spot, under pressure, in front of everyone, and only one shot at it. Doesn't sound like participation will get you that haha. So far I've only heard of handful of people even getting that far. And its also just a baby samurai lol

Nice shooting! I use Active Self Protection to get a data set on what self-defense encounters are like plus I've been in ones that I didn't have to shoot. It seems to me that it's extremely unlikely that a private citizen will use a gun mounted light outside the home. I carry a light as a non-lethal investigative tool as well as a method to light blind a possible assailant.

I'm one the carriers both a Hand held on my person at all times + a WML on my G17 all the time as well. Along with a spare magazine. Both light serve completely different purposes out in the field. I use my HHL "Hand held light" every day for personal and work use. I'm in the PSD field and I'm using it for multiple reasons. Lights are a great tool to add...but you have to use them + learn to manipulate them in your hands/fingers to understand and except the different options you will learn/see from doing so. Off note: You guys are killing it on the progressive skills. All of you are climbing higher n higher each new video. SJ is coming to my range next month and We can't wait.

How many of the guys use a wedge on your holster? I'm like A-sizz, I prefer to adjust my holster by one adjustment to allow a better grip from draw, however I feel like it flips my grip out a little bit since I'm not quit as buff as Aaron 😅 so it doesn't sit flat against me.
@Tier1Concealed
@Tier1Concealed 10 ай бұрын
Some of us use wedges, some don't. It also depends on the gun being carried, typically smaller subcompacts can benefit more from the wedges since they can be a little "top heavy" in the holster.

I think Massad Ayoob made the most salient point on the weapon light issue. To paraphrase... For a self-defense situation, why are you going to use a flashlight? To identify and verify your target. Obviously. This by definition implies that if you identify a non-target, you have now pointed a lethal weapon at a civilian, one who could press charges on you even if you save their life. A handheld light allows you to identify targets, without pointing your weapon at them. Until I hear a better argument, this is the ideology I carry by.
@Tier1Concealed

Nice job! I just completed Scott's 2-day RDS class here in CT. He's an excellent instructor - so far, the best pistol class I've taken. And the drills are really challenging! Just as importantly, the drills give you something to work on on your own, even doing dry fire (to practice the draw). The RDS class is more than just "red dot." He gets deep into core competencies, and he shatters many of the myths perpetuated by so many instructors.

Having a light is good. But what is the point of intentionally shooting with an inferior grip? You can get a WML and free up that other hand to make a superior grip on the pistol. Why is a handheld better? If it's because you don't want to think you have to use your WML for basic lighting tasks, have a handheld also.

Maybe if these guys focused on actually making their holsters and not making youtube videos they could get their products out in a timely manner. I don't understand how it takes 30 days to make a simple kydex holster. They say they are "Custom hand made" and this is why it takes so long. Yet we all know how kydex holsters are made. I mean really guys there are thousands of videos of guys making these holsters and it literally takes 30 minutes start to finish. I could see a leather holster taking this long but not a kydex one. Then they ship it out with DHL or USPS ground and charge $12 for shipping. So you are looking at about two months from time of order to it arriving at your door. Don't get me wrong, I have ordered two holster now because I like them. But this will be the last one. T-rex Arms has the same Kydex holster and they have them at your door in 7 days for $30 less. Teir 1 really needs to reevaluate their business model.

@@dubtron12 Not an expert. Just a customer that knows shitty customer service and horrible business practices when I see them. Any company that will not allow orders to be cancelled 24 hours after being placed and then failing to deliver their product in the advertised time frame is shady at best. Not to mention not allowing returns. Please explain how it takes Teir 1 30 plus days to make a plastic holster when everyone else is doing it in 3.
