Rachel's book, The Shabby Chic Home, is actually a pretty good example of what you are describing Pam, even though it was written over 20 years ago. If you have not read it already I highly recommend picking it up. While many of the books on the Shabby Chic style really seem to focus on cluttery knick knacks, in that book, Rachel describes the process of turning her newly bought house into something she was comfortable with, using what she calls the Shabby Chic principals. I followed that book 20 years ago when I bought my first house and have kept to the principles ever since. It was about beauty, comfort and function. Wood floors, white walls, utilizing what you could in a home without changing, and when you did need to make changes, making sure they fit the palatte and the principles. I have a lot of white and grey in my home, but I do use many of Rachel's linens and quilts to make things cozy and protect furniture. I created large container gardens on my decks outside to have roses, herb, and other flowers nearby. I used the idea of displaying beautiful things we actually use by displaying my silky nighties and robes in the bedroom. Rather than plain blinds or window coverings I opted for movable screens and hung pretty scarves over them but also use them to air dry clothes. As the daughter of a modern architect, I also have trouble with the clutter, but the palatte and the lifestyle appeal greatly to me.
