Artists were never appreciated throughout history. Theyve underpaid and overworked their entire careers. Being an artist already comes with the stereotype that you'll be homeless. Mindless slop ragebait is what gets on the front pages online, never good art, or artists. People undermine the skill really needed to be good, so banana on the wall gets millions- MASTER CLASS ARTISTRY will get like 20 likes on social media. When will we realize that the world never cared for us.

I don't want to draw trends, I don't want to make videos, I don't want to make art for the sake of appeasing people. Instagram pushing posts with music into the reels feed has forced me to start adding music to my posts even though I vehemently hate that shit. It feels like I have to do all this unneccessary extra work that adds no value to my artwork just to get seen and, even then, I don't. @@Themrsnappyifylike twitter if twitter wasn’t actively hostile. I quite like it, it has pretty good filtering so by picking feeds I care about and muting content I don’t like, I pretty much don’t see anything I don’t want to. But I’m on it for fan stuff so I can see it would suck for original work - I’m in a feed for ship A/B so I see anything tagged A/B or B/A and nothing *not* tagged with those comes up on the feed, meaning I don’t often see B/C, and having blacklisted B/C means I have to actively choose to click on it cos the posts with B/C in the text are hidden. However that also means that i don’t see creators’ original content or non ship content unless I go to their profile. As a beginner artist w next to no following, I see a lot more interaction on BS than tumblr, but it does only have about 10 million users and they’re generally in small communities ime. Watching deviantART turn into a slop factory in real time hurt so much. I tried giving it a chance past Eclipse; but once they gave the ok to those AI “artists” to post on their site, I deleted everything from my account (tried deleting my account outright too, but dA is a glitchy mess, so I can’t????). dA was one of the first websites dedicated to art that I joined all the way back in 2014, and I made so many friends because we shared common interests. But, again, the people running the site shot themselves in the foot. And now I’m here, only having a Twitter and a KZbin because I basically had a mental breakdown earlier this year and deleted my other social media accounts, hhhhhh. EDIT: In case you’re wondering, yes, I use to have videos uploaded on this KZbin account. But because of the previously mentioned breakdown, they’re gone. I do plan on reviving it one day, though.

I miss the old communities so so much, but back then, the content was more of "I made this and am so excited, here it is" and you could talk about it. Now it's a lot of "relatable, funny, fast" short videos/text posts where a creator's personality doesn't shine through, since most creators start catering to an algorithm rather than sharing for their own sake. How people find you changed: Instagram relies on reels for traffic, KZbin relies on shorts for traffic. Toyhouse and deviant art are less for communicating about the art, more about the sellable value of things now. Tothouse stores my art and characters, but doesn't ever spark art conversations with those tiny comment bubbles!! The problem is not that an artwork is bad, or the person posting is bad, it's that it isn't fast and easy to consume. As an instagram 3D artist, I see time and time again where text-post pictures of relatable art content show up more whenever I look for art, and it's on artist accounts trying to gain traction. There is no community with that. I get the reason for the algorithm, but to push back small artist makes me sad. Showing only amazing unbelievable things makes me sad. I want to see more emotion, more people wnjoying art. Epic video as always!

this is mostly about commissions/selling but i feel that it's still relevant one of the best things of old deviantart is that 13yo me could just draw some dogs on a premade base, upload it, submit in 539 different groups and eventually, someone would like the design i made and buy it for like 50 points some days ago i saw a video of someone that was "tips to get art commissions" and the first one was literally "grow an audience" i am an artist, not a marketing expert, i don't want to have to BEG for a slim second of attention with reels or silly memes or fanart of popular media, i don't want my art to be a marketed neatly packaged content to be consumed, i want people to see what i do and either like it, or buy it, if they think it's cool with dA groups i knew that my things were being shown to people that WANTED to see them, because groups were caregorized into folders, so if someone wanted to see my dog adopt, they would have to go to the dogs folder, with modern social media i am marketing to everyone, 90% of the views in my work are from users that are not interested in buying art (and god forbid your drawing shows up on the timeline of someone who doesn't like what you do and decides that it's okay to just be mean on people's art. thankfully i was never harassed or anything, but i always had anxiety posting stuff on twitter because of the toxicity there) what i want to get is that, deviantart, even if flawed, served to me as the perfect way to both casually share my art AND sell my stuff, nowadays, art-sharing platforms are mostly for artists to artists, meaning that you likely won't find a lot of commissioners on artfol or cara, if you want to sell your stuff you either have to build an audience or go on various discord servers/subreddits offering your services, which is again, a lot of work to someone who draws, and isn't supposed to do marketing i'm just very furstrated at the amount of mental effort i need to put just to reach people, both to share AND sell my work, both of them feel like a chore to do, i need to put captions but in a word limit, i need to put tags but not too much, i need to worry about cropping if applicable, hell if i still had instagram i would've needed to put songs and extra random images at the end just to make people swipe more, it's an huge amount of effort to in the end of the day get some like numbers and maybe two comments from my art friends that i met a decade ago (because forming new friendships is also hard in the current environment)

I feel like something that is also SAD for us artist, is the bot invasion, how many time small artist got excited by a DM, by a notification, just to see a bot account trying to scam them...? Twitter, Insta, Tumblr, DA, they all go that issue. The worse is on twitter, you don't get notified when a bot follow you (thx elon I guess) so you need to check, and spend time to make sure that you don't have hundred of bots in your follower counter, last time I did a check, I removed 200 account from my 2019 twitter followers count. As small artist, INTERNET IS DEAD, it's filled with bots, no more social interaction, and HOW HARD IT IS TO ENTER CIRCLES OF ARTIST IN NICHES ?? HELLO?? I tried for 2 years to enter a circles of artist in the AOT fandom since it's my hyperfixation... I managed to get 2 friends, by posting fanart, following trend, doing original work, trying to engage with other people, they already have their friend and don't need any, so instead you bootlick hard people, YOU WILL BE ALONE!! and as an introvert I HATE that since commenting someone I'm not a moot with is hard for me... I'm starting to refocus my art career, redid my twitter account but my new one was called a bot cuz I had a backlog of art I posted one per one everyday, I got banned 10 hours for that?? I'm trying to look for friend, but it's either people with little to no interest similar to me that just want follow for follow or people already in circle and are "pretty big" so they won't care about my new account :/ I never felt so alone on social media before...

The internet doesn’t seem as fun as it used to, especially when it comes to communities. It felt like it was easier to connect to people back then, and it was so much fun seeing artists getting to have fun with each other! It helped us all feel less alone Now it kinda just feels like no matter where I post, I feel like I’m just shouting into a void. It’s harder to talk to people and form friendships, and even places like discord servers feel very shallow (despite the point is to connect and to be part of a community). Social media doesn’t feel all that “social” anymore,and it kinda stinks
@CrazyMechaFish2 ай бұрын
Engagement in social media nowadays is really shitty I think. People used to write way more comments, used to share other people’s posts, used to actually press that ‘like’ button. Nowadays it’s really easy to see like posts with relatively many views but basically 0 comments and likes, I thought I was just unlucky with getting traction UNTIL I saw few people irl getting content they love on their pages, saying ‘omg I loveee it! that’s my favorite artist’ and they don’t like, share or comment anything under that post. Some of them don’t even follow their ‘favorite content creators’, they just SEARCH THEIR NICKNAME every time they want to see this person’s content. I think that’s absolutely crazy. Why did people stop engaging with content they love?
@CrazyMechaFish2 ай бұрын
I kinda think that the lack of interactions is partially caused by short paced trend content that looks almost the same(because god forbid you do something different, people will literally bully you off of the internet if that ‘different’ would be too extreme for them to handle) nowadays. People get bored with this kind of content really fast and therefore don’t interact with it. Like, it’s almost all the same, and if it’s in video form it’s really short. You’ll obviously get bored really fast of seeing the same ten second video of that one trending sound but with slightly different characters over and over again until the trend dies in like a week. It’s a paradox, really. You NEED to follow trends because otherwise it’s impossible to get ANY kind of traction, but if you do follow them people usually don’t interact with it all that much because this type of content 99% of times is really boring and repetitive. You cannot win no matter what.
@CrazyMechaFish2 ай бұрын
Also… old internet was much more welcoming to content of people no matter their skills, like, yeah I know people would still occasionally say that your drawings are ugly or that you don’t deserve your following, but I feel like it happens WAAAAAY more often now. Your art is slightly worse than the average? You’ll get bullied off the internet. Your art is in slightly more unique style than the average? You’ll get bullied off the internet. You try to experiment with something in your drawings(like drawing different angles or some extreme perspective) that people would praise you for like five years ago? Now you’ll get bullied off the internet because it ‘doesn’t look professional’. Internet used to be so cool because people here were all almost exactly like you. Just common folk. Television was the thing for all the ‘megasuperprofessional’ people with expensive cameras and microphones and other shit. Now you can get bullied if you don’t have the same quality as they do.

UNTIL YOU CLOSED THEM!!! i miss this so much... i never catch what ppl i follow post anymore bc of the shift away from this notification style its SO SAD. I feel like this style in itself would fix a lot of the problems on sites like sheezy and cara. Its also why i like toyhouse so much. Please im desperate bring back the inbox BRING IT BACK!!!!) I get some ppl like the feed style but i really dont understand why. How do you see what artists you follow post? Its a good way to find new artists but a SHITTY way to keep up with the ones you ALREADY FOLLOW... theres almost no point to follow artists anymore bc its not like youll ever see what they post anyway unless youre literally online 24/7 (which is very unhealthy... if you do this... please go outside, go to a national park, go to the movies, go hang out with friends at a local coffee shop) The inbox style helped you stay up to date with the artists you follow WHILE not having to be watching a feed 24/7 You could take a break for a week without missing anything bc itll all be there waiting for you to catch up on in your inbox!!!! I thoroughly DESPISE the switch to solely feed based, no notifications/no inbox, and i think this is the root cause of all of the other problems we have with social media. The algorithms should NOT be telling us what goes into our notifs. The FOLLOW BUTTON ahould ne what tells the site to put things in our notifications like it was before. Idk who decided that people dont want inboxes anymore but its really fucking sucked. Oh yeah and those that do have inboxes they clear your notifs when you so much as open the inbox and holy shit i hate that too!!! The old style that dA (and other sites) used to have was so much nicer. So much more control over it. Tbh keep the feed pages too bc like i said its good for discovery! But bring back inboxes. But the sites wont do that because they want us to be terminally online xD....

And twitter is so toxic that I recently decided to leave because my art doesn't even show up in my friend's algorithms anymore so I have literally no reason to stay. I recently joined tumblr and for me thats fairing better than the other places but honestly rn having a small discord community where people happen to share their art with each other seems like the best community I can find and that feels sad. very well said- i think we should all make personal goals toward rebuilding our lost communities personally, i theorize it's all a result of normies invading spaces and taking them over only to say "this wasn't that bad" while demanding more content that is exactly the same as the watered down versions of more authentic communities (furry, alt fashion, fanfiction) and the more authentic members that previously enjoyed those communities have had to scramble into hiding again like romans during the fall

Yeah, as someone who has been online for many years, i really miss the older days where there was that sense of community as you put beautifully. Maybe things may shift, idk. I hope it does one day. I'm really struggling to keep pushing through bc i just feel like no matter what i do, it's "wrong" or like "not good enough." It's really just like confusing and disheartening, honestly.

I'm at the point where I've gotten completely numb and used to being screwed over as a small artist, so I don't care about being consistent or trying to gain traction anymore because there's no point. It's unfortunate that it's killed a lot of my motivation to post in the process but it might honestly be for the better because at least I'm not posting TOO MUCH and burning myself out for breadcrumbs of temporary fame. I'm dedicating that energy towards my college work and giving myself breaks so I don't burn out as fast. I no longer have time to worry about internet fame like I used to in high school because I'm a grown woman with a BFA in Animation to work towards. I can't afford to care and worry about traction on the internet when it doesn't matter, my degree does. I still post but I make it very clear that I post mainly for myself now because of the algorithm hiding me away for so long. I'm used to it now, I've adapted. But I've also been completely isolated and forgotten about in my own community as a result

I'm planning on starting up some accounts to post my art on soon, and this made me wish I could start them in that golden Era. I do plan on doing it more for fun then for success, though, so I suppose in a way I'm bringing a part of the old vibe, even if it might result in a small audience at best. Love your videos btw! Great video! I don't feel like I've ever been a community-driven person, and I thought that was the main reason I haven't been able to find a foothold on any social media. The weird era of drama made it much more unapealing.

I’ve been posting a lot more regularly on youtube and Instagram the past few months, and I think maybe one or two videos have gone “viral” by my standards (like 1k-2k views lmfao). I’ve maybe gained like 15 insta followers from it, but youtube I’ve noticed people do tend to follow you more- this account went from 15 subs to like 60 in a few days which is crazy imo. I really dislike the direction social media is taking the art community, though :( the toxicity in the tiktok community and of course the little to no exposure great artists get is super sad :(

I am an artist but I would more like to comment on the content creation side because I have more experience in that front. I've been doing short form content from my start. I had my "debut" on tiktok with my dink masks and after my first account got banned I moved to a different one. I joined a hype house and with that made minot friendships with the people in it. This was all about a year or two ago and then I had more freedom to do what I want, people would watch it no matter what I posted. I don't remember how much I averaged in views because it was a while ago but i do remember it was a good amount. I abandoned TikTok after a maybe six months for reasons I wont mention because that's not the point. After a good few months maybe a year long break from content creation, I can back on KZbin shorts doing basically the same stuff I used to. I would follow trends and stuff and those videos didn't do much better then thee ones that didn't follow trends. My first video's averaged a good couple hundred views. But after a few months there was a change in something and my videos started flopping unless I did trends. Now, almost a year later and with nearly 6k subs, I still have to do trends or I don't even break 100 views. It's insane how much has changed in just the short time I've done KZbin.

Well, there are too many people who want to be seen as an artist but don't put the work into learning skill. They trace, copy, AI their way into your social media feed and pollute the work of real passionate artists. At least you are creating your own style, not hook up with anime like all the other grifters.

haven't finished the vid but Tumblr is great for artists especially for fandom ones, though it is kinda niche. Theres no algorithm, no fast scrolling you have to do to get smething interesting to look at, and the community is far more interactive than in say, Twit

Sadly for a queer social app, it is owned by a huge transphobe stalker that will get your account banned for no reason other than you post transgender content there. Yet it also has a popular hashtag of it and etc

For me its the homogenization of styles, you draw pretty girls and boys in a vibrant semi realistic anime style or youre basically irrelevant. The beauty standards invading artwork too and everyones pretty twinks looking exactly the same, if you draw diverse art it just doesnt fit with the beauty standards and algorithms

This video made me realize I made art always catered slightly towards what my online friends would like. If I didn't i didn't bother to share it bc it was "Cringe" or "Not good enough" It lowkey felt like I was always catering to a private audience and the audience didn't even know they were being catered to! It's not their fault that I tend to do this but thanks for making this video. Made me think a bit harder than my one brain cell normally let's me lol

Artists? Social media is dead, for everyone. Its no longer a social place. Barely works for sharing. It died to corporate greed, advertisements and squeezing watch time out of the user. Maybe one day we'll have sustainable user-focused places in the internet, for now it's no more than a tool... :p
