Topraksız domates seralarında bitkinin durak noktası olarak toprak yerine diğer substratlar kullanılarak toprak kaynaklı hastalıklardan bitkiyi korumaktadır. Ayrıca bitkinin büyüme evresine göre veya bitkide oluşabilecek besin elementi eksikliği durumlarında substratların içeriğine müdahale edilebilmesi, kontrolün üreticinin ellerinde olmasını sağlar.
