i love that solution Dave, about 2 weeks ago i tanned a whole whitetail deer with one bottle and had some to spare to tan a few squirrels. If anyone is looking into home tanning i strongly recomend it.

Dave, I want to say thank you. I've seen a lot of guys here on youtube that get their notoriety and then they stop making videos and giving out knowledge and information. So thank you very much for all the priceless info you put out for us. I hope to come to one or more of your classes one of these days. Keep up the great work.

I'm beginning to realize just how hard our ancestors worked just to survive. Good weather was spent preparing for winter. Chopping wood to stay warm, preserving the food they'd grown, salting and smoking food they'd hunted so they wouldn't starve, skinning and tanning hides to make warm clothes and blankets. Every minute of the day was consumed preparing just to stay alive.

When I tag and hides before even when I if I was gonna take him to the market to sell. I used to after they dried toss them in a dryer on very low heat or cool heat. And let the hair fluff up. That's what I used to do. And it used to come out, especially in the window would come up. Really nice to me to hide a lot more money and also they look nicer.

Hey Dave, i've got a hide today and have been scraping fat of and so on. I wanted to brain tan it, but i cant find brains in any stores or on internet sides from my country, so in case it will stay that way i wondered if you could tell me (or even better make a video) on tanning with eggs as you mentioned in the video?

You may have answered this in an earlier video but what are the more valuable small hides to harvest in the eastern woodlands?
@joshuajones888510 жыл бұрын
Would this be a good method for tanning rabbits to make a blanket, or for something like a black bear? ive only seen pictures of the old timers around here preparing hides and they always used a frame to stretch a hide on after splitting it down the belly, then fleshing it with a oddly shaped knife (usually seal and bear)

Again, thank you for the video. How do break in a bigger hide? It seems it would be cumbersome to try put a deer hide on a rope like that, or am I way off?

Dave I want to start by saying I really appreciate all your self reliance videos. These skills are truly is a dying art that everyone should know. My question to you is in a long term self reliance situation how would you find salt in the wilderness for salting hides if you don't live by any salt mines, or the ocean? Is there a substitute you can use for salt?
@dillpicklelilly9 жыл бұрын
I used my wifes moisturizing lotion once on a salted and scraped hide, lotioned and smoked and lotioned and broke it and it came out really good. 5 years later still soft and no hair loss.

Dave, you mentioned before about getting road kill for meat sinew and hide purposes. How do you know if the hide has been sitting around to long to be of any use? thx

is a deers brain big enough to tan the whole hide? and do you have to tan or can you just go into breaking it down on the rope after washing the salt out? really enjoy your videos and im going hunting for the first time saturday and hope to be able to do what you have taught me threw these videos. thank you

Dave, had a question. Will that hide tanning formula affect your skin? I heard that about brain tanning (it softens your callouses, may or may not be an issue). Is there a primitive way to make gloves that prevent this (maybe waxed leather? Oiled or a layer of fish glue, perhaps?)? What about an alternative to salting the hide, in case you don't have it? Maybe ashes would work?

hey dave i just tanned a coyote hide using the same tanning solution you used it said to wash the hide with dish soap to clean off the salt and grease. then let it almost dry and apply the tanning solution. well i followed the directions and the hide turned out a little greasy. did i not wash it enough or did i use too much tanning solution? and will it soak into the hide eventualy? thanks in advance!!

Dave do you have a older horse that this green one is good around.What you might do is when you go out is have the green horse to work along side the older horse just put a saddle on the green just put him one a lead rope and keep him next to old experienced horse.So long as it not a mare in heat that would not no fun

would love to see a video on getting the hair off befor the tan. IE a deer for buck skin. somthing to that nature. Thanks for all the info.
@quentinrox266312 жыл бұрын
DO NOT use ashes! Ashes will make the hair fall out. Deer hides are soaked in hardwood ashes to make the hair fall out when making the deer hide into leather. Salting the hide is not necessary, but it helps dry it faster.
