One of the mercs even gently tries to calm the kid down. 19:40 Another good example is the mercs being total dude-bros where they're "oo-rah" is instead literally just "yup-yup" and fist bumping each other. I think this is one of the best campaigns in COD history because how creative Infinity Ward was with every mission putting us in new scenarios and not just mindless shooting even if the game felt kinda short . Only problem with the story was that you can see the obvious betrayal a mile away , they could have made Graves a third playable character and gave player a choice in decision making of being a Mercenary and choose between the trust of your allies or what's best for business in given critical situations . That could have given the campaign more length and replaybility but fuuuck...these days AAA developers are not that creative are they?

I mean playing off the original MW2 and what the OG shadow company and shepherd does to you, I was not surprised for a betrayal, but I wish they took the story in a different direction. I love this games campaign and I still find it pretty realistic/convincing how he at least gave them a chance to retire and move on with their lives after this. Makes it all the more believable and heart breaking, because they could’ve walked away and spared themselves the trouble, but at the cost of saving his men. Just how shepherd was willing to go all out to save his reputation on losing the missiles even going as far to order the executions of innocents, we see a lot of that in the real modern world. This modern warfare series really does put the characters in some hard realistic scenarios with tough calls and consequences for either sides of decisions. Even shepherd did this with making captain price look hypocritical “we get dirty so the world stays clean” “sometimes you got to do bad in order to do some good” kinda sucks being on the other end of the baton eh?

knowing what Shadow Company did in modern warfare 2 it was fully expected Graves would betray ghost and task force 141 in here. they were highly trained mercs hired by general shepherd to be his own little task force. since Shepherd was a military general. there were laws in place for certain. things you can and cannot do. that's why he went rogue. because his mercenaries can do things for him. now both modern warfare 2,s have a different story. general shepherd started shadow Company to kill Makarov and get revenge for what he did. he wanted to be the hero that stopped Makarov and ww3. that's why he turned on ghost and roach during loose ends in the original. shepherd was mad about Makarov detonating the nukes in cod 4. now this Sheppard voiced by the legendary transformers general. Glenn morshower and also the OG overlord in MW2. his character is mad because he let down his men to cover himself because of the failed delivery. since the Russian pmcs took the missiles and gave them to Hassan. shadow Company is a tactical group of highly trained mercs working for Sheppard. they usually wear all black tact gear with advanced weaponry. riot shields, blacked out vehicles. even regular military humvees. they all carry walkie talkies and are in private smaller squads. they commit war crimes too.

Something I just noticed during the Hassan interrogation; when he asks Graves where the missiles they stole were going, Graves dodges the question and Shepherd tries to change the subject, saying he “doesn’t care where they came from”. We don’t know it yet at this point in the story, but Graves and Shepherd both know that Hassan having the missiles to begin with is their fault, and they want to keep it a secret.

Graves is an absolute unit and seems to be an effective leader. It’s a damn shame that he turns on you but the best villains make you wish they are on your side. I’d have a beer with him provided an opportunity. I wouldn’t mind seeing a Shadow Company DLC expansion for the campaign. I’d imagine they and Shepherd have a long history filled with potential content. Maybe as a lead up to knowing more about the chase against Makarov. Looking forward to Sandman and/or Alex returning for MW3 in 2024/25.

Shadow company has a lot of mercs. If Graves was a founding member/own the company I can see Shepard trying to have him replaced by one of his money hungry lieutenants who sold him out. Mercs become mercs either because they couldn’t leave the military life behind, for the money or it’s all they really know. In a profession that the only morals are that of the dollar bill, trust is a much more valued commodity. Trust is what with your men/your commander is what separates you as a comrade in arms from a expendable like a hand grenade. Hearing a commander like Graves got wasted by one of the LTs and took over would have at least made several squads or platoon’s worth of men leave if Shadow Company is a battalion sized asset. Greaves would have had men on his side to jump ship immediately and more on the inside willing to work with him.

I don't see how he is the bad guy. The missiles were Sheppard's fault, he put himself on the ground with his men and destroyed the second missile, he checked on Alejandro after it blew up, he detains the mexican special forces instead of killing them because of a possible connection to el sin nombre which makes sense considering how many mexican LEO are in the cartels pockets. He gives Soap, Ghost and Alejandro a chance to walk away and could've easily finished off Soap but doesn't and kills corrupt cops in the city, only targeting the main characters after the fire fight at the gate, did I miss something ?

He still detained Alejandro’s men. He says they can walk away, but did he really think acting like a dick and being snarky about capturing Allie’s was gonna end any way beyond a gun fight? It doesn’t help that he doesn’t even try to de escalate the situation. He just says “this is my base now, fuck off.” Doesn’t give any explanation, and when things get frisky he immediately goes for intimidation. Lastly, he’s very patronizing during his boss battle. Doesn’t seem remorseful for having to kill Soap and mocks Rudy. Loved him right until his betrayal though.

His betrayal hits almost as hard as Shepards in the original MW2. Especially since Graves actually fights alongside us and seems to have a sort of trust with Ghost and Soap, only to show his true colors. Shepherd was always in the background giving orders, so the shock wasn’t in relation to him, it was the shooting of Roach and Ghost. In this case, the shock comes from Graves seeming like a trustworthy guy but in reality he was the worst type of mercenary.
