I’ve done inspection on pipelines for over 30 years and every time I got involved with a hot tap, it would make me pucker. I would watch from a distance then do my job when no sparks or open fire is around. It takes a special kind of a person to weld on a “live” pipe. Very professionally done.

I wouldn't do that if I was you. This is a job for professionals even though this is a water line. These guys don't just go out and just do a job like this, they are pros. You could get in big trouble working on the wrong side of a live line. Specifically if something goes wrong. These guys have a plan approved by an engineer. The safety of everyone on this job and the environment is considered for a project like this.

For anyone wondering what they are doing in these videos - a hot tap is typically “work” on an in service pipe line without taking it out of service. It’s not really explained well in this video but in the first segment they start out with a big in service pipe, and installed 2 valves with a bypass, this is the piece at 4:15 that allows fluid to flow around the area they are working on, so the pipeline doesn’t have to be shut down while they make repairs or tie in another well or pipeline. Once the bypass is flowing, the section between them is isolated and the pressure is bled off with the 2 small silver valves you see them install. In this video, they installed the bypass, then once it was depressurized, they cut in a valve (blue valve shown at about the 4:49 min mark). The last few mins of the video shows the hot tap cutter, like a big hole saw, contained in water, presumably to prevent any sparks from igniting what’s in the pipe.

Very good explanation! I didn't understand why they welded a tee on the pipe without cutting before. What is the tool at 1:39?

The contents of the pipeline will not ignite,,,,, No oxygen.
@ScoredPiston
@ScoredPiston 3 жыл бұрын
Lynn C. Doyle - uh yeah, so long as it’s sealed in the pipe. But......if you drill a big hole in the pipe like what they are doing here, then.....it’s exposed to oxygen. Even if the pipe is empty of product the remaining vapours can ignite so you still need to prevent sparks.

I worked on this equipment everyday for the past 6 years. The valves in the first job looked rough at best.

Not impressed. The Mexicans are currently hot tapping with 2 man crews and none of the fancy equipment.

Interesting video. Music is overrated in most videos to the point of being unwatchable. This is one of them.

I hate all of the safety nazi comments on KZbin but I was a little surprised with the lack of shoring in the first segment. Here in the US people would be in jail for people working next to a vertical cut higher than their heads.

Actually if the bottom of the trench is wider then the height of the trench wall it's considered an excavation and different rules apply
