My PTR91 has a Magpul PRS2 stock which has an adjustable cheek rest and LOP and a Midwest Industries Mlok rail system with a BCM hand stop and a Witt Machine SME muzzle brake and a 2-10x30MPVO. Is it heavy? Yes! Is it longer than my AR carbine? Yes. But for the purpose of a DMR it's perfect. The recoil is very manageable. I even have a video on my channel of me hip firing it with one hand. With that being said, I am a firm believer that there is a weapon for everyone and a weapon for every application. If you want to have an easy to carry weapon that is good for room clearing and CQB then a G3/HK91/PTR91 is not the rifle for you. But if you want a solid and reliable rifle with the capability of engaging targets out to 800 to 1,000 yards that can still be used for shorter engagements then these rifles are hard to beat.

@djdrack4681

So, I gotta ask being a civ...why no 45deg offset reddot? Bcuz of the backup irons? I'd think even with something like a 1-8 lpvo you'd be rocking it at 8x most of the time with a micro reddot offset for sudden close distance or CQB scenarios. If you went to something a bit more powerful like a 4-12x or 4-16x like Primary Arms offers in Slx series, you'd be at that low magnification that an offset would make more sense. Does the longer buffer help eliminate the damage to brass that prevents reloading; and consequently is bane of us regulars when using this?
@Bruciando
@Bruciando Жыл бұрын
You failed to mention the MAJOR shortcoming of the G3 in the assault role, which is its lack of a LRBHO and the consequent glacial time for reloads (see the InRangeTV battle rifle comparison from several years ago for the G3s last place finish in that category for more info.) Also, Spuhr's inline stock, while a necessary (dare I say mandatory?) part of the upgrade process, it is *ridiculously* overpriced for what it is, and I frankly cannot understand why no one has come up with a 3D file to print your own adapter to use an AR stock; it's not like there isn't room for the buffer in an AR tube...

In my Army days (Portugal) I learned that once you know the recoil and stop being afraid of the kick, you can hit your targets very well up to 400 meters!! Beyond that you have to take it slower. When I was deployed to Iraq in 04 I used as main service rifle the G36, but we also had the G3 in as backup in the armory! When ever I went on long patrols I always had a G3 in my vehicle. One day after realizing that hiding behind dirt walls was good cover for the bad guys, I thought to my self "lets see what the G3 can do!" Went back to get the G3, full 20 rounds magazine and as the started to have holes the size or oranges, the wall was not good cover anymore. For me the G3 with the SPUHR kit is a beast. Thanks for showing the Portuguese Marines😀👍

For the Norwegians and Swedes it makes perfect sense: 7.62x51mm is a better choice in an snowy environment where you're likely to have significant tree and bush cover. One thing most people forget about the G3 recoil absorption is it's buffer design. The buffer is a friction buffer so it requres to be completely degreased to work properly. Furthermore oiling the gun and storing it upright will grease the friction element.

This is only partially true as the brake rings are in the buffer system for use with rifle grenades. The added resistance with the weight of the grenade increases bolt velocity so the brake rings are needed otherwise they are not really used. If you get bills enhanced buffer for example there are no brake rings and lubrication would make no difference as it's entirely dependent on the spring.

I'd encourage you to go back and re-listen to this segment. We actually said the recoil on the G3 feels LESS - but the impulse, based on the operating system, causes it to be very hard to control with standard recoil techniques. The SCAR recoil is sharper, but with OR without a brake, a user can control the 'return to zero' more effectively. More correction required without a brake, but, the brake itself doesn't change the operating system impulse.

@@9HoleReviews My apologies. Everything is subjective. My PTR is the farthest thing from modern. I've realized I'm very muscular and that may have a lot to do with it. I have the same enhanced buffer. It has felt recoil of course. However, using the HK 21E buffered club foot, I swear it is so heavy that I can't even perceive an impulse from the bolt cycling. It's 3+lbs by itself. It's WAY bigger than the enhanced PSG-1/MSG-90 buffer. Only fits in a club foot. I had to round out the back plate buffer hole with a Dremel to fit the teeth through. A polymer lower will help your rifle's weight and balance tremendously. I hope you do a an episode with the new PA PLx 6x magnifier. I pre-ordered one and it has great glass, yet weights nothing. One thing I read about the recoil issue is that most people store their rifles incorrectly in the verticle position, butt down. According to German Army procedure this allows oils to drain downwards with gravity and this extra lubrication interferes with the buffer by eliminating the buffer's resistance/effectiveness. German Army procedure requires their G3 rifles to be stored/racked horizontally on wall in order to eliminate this problem. Have you heard anything about this?

Who needs red dot sights etc with a G3? As an "sturmgewehr" rifle at distances under 150 meters you almost don't have to aim the target. Point and shoot is enough. As a defensive weapon and in the range of 400 meters the the iron sights are enough. With the minimum training you can have an accuracy of 80to 90% only with iron sights. As a DMR, with the standard 3x Steiner optics you can have pretty good results up to 800 meters. For longer distances you have the HK11 and the MG 3.

there's been a lot of discussion on this in the home guard, around what you'd rather have and when. most boys say they'd prefer the ak4 in a fire fight against an entrenched enemy because you'll shoot through brick and concrete with it, though I prefer the ak5 in general, it's quite a bit lighter, less cumbersome and I don't think you need that stopping power against anything short of a bear

My older friends who got to serve with the ak4 say it's a blessing and a curse in CQB. Clearing houses was easy, just shoot through the walls, lugging the pig around on the other hand wasn't that fun. It has become even more cumbersome with the new stock I've heard because it upset the balance and make it more front heavy.

Ok, I have a lever action carbine 357 Magnum rifle for my home defense. I use 180 grain hard cast ammunition. I live in an urban area with plenty of buildings. The distance from my lever action with the hottest rounds of 357 Magnum may reach 200 yards of effectiveness on small game at max. Point being that in my environment of an inner city I don’t need 800 yards of a hard hitting ammunition. All I really need is about 100 yards max. Now if I was a sniper, or defending a fixed position then I would say…”yeah, let me get that G3 for a moment”. Realistically you could enter a building with an 18 inch barrel, and an overall length of 41 inches, but you’d be better off with a 16 inch barrel or less in that environment.

As a norwegian, i like the G3 much better than the HK416 that we now use + and - but. Heavy, solid, reliable, good for longrange and much better penetration on target. Have seen people shoot reliably hits on a person size target at 500/550 meters, on only iron sights. it all comes down to training and habits.

Always had a soft spot for the G3 rifle. Obviously biased as it was my service rifle in the Norwegian army. But I always enjoyed shooting it and it is incredibly reliable. Sweden only use the AK4 for its Homeguard/National Guard. Conscripts or professional units use the AK% in 5.56mm and i hope it will stay that way, as the AK4 are cumbersome, heavy and big recoil, plus you cant carry as much ammunition.

The G3 might still find a place as a Reserve rifle in the nations now starting to retire it, if the influence of recent events in Eastern Europe on the development of assymetric national defense strategies have shown us anything. I think the G3 still has a few decades of service in it.
@Fiendir
@Fiendir Жыл бұрын
You're bang on, this is currently the Swedish home defense rifle of choice. As the Ak4 started getting phased out for the Ak5, most of them ended up being repurposed for reservists. And honestly, when tasked with holding down an established position in Swedish climate? All the negatives of weight/ergonomics are pretty much nullified, and the strengths of the G3 really start to shine.
@dylanwight5764
@dylanwight5764 Жыл бұрын
@@Fiendir On the other hand, the recoil pattern has more rock and roll than an Elvis convention. This can be difficult to train for, especially with limited range time and ammunition budgets. Although as Henry mentioned, the rifle can still be kept competent even with older optics and clamp mounts, so it's hard to tell how much the G3's recoil matters in the context of being used from fortified lines. Ideally the AK4 would be paired with HK33s to take advantage of both main NATO cartridges in the event that Sweden must defend its borders. With Sweden looking to also phase out the AK5, I have no doubt that rifle will also be stockpiled should it be called upon for home defense. The HK33 would be better but not significantly enough to counteract the cost of acquiring it against the withdrawal of the AK5.

I loved the AK4 and got first price in a competition against 400+ participants in the organisation. Sharpshooting at 200+ meters is just as fun as doing a standing mag dump at 15 meters, if you know how to stand and hold it. A heavy rifle, but a very accurate and heavy hitter as well. You will defeat targets inside vehichles etc where 5.56 will not go through. It definately has a role still today as a DMR if nothing else. Lovely piece of weaponry.

Nah - the whole point is the difference in operating system and how the roller-delayed system spreads out the recoil - the recoil 'feels' softer on the G3 than the SCAR, but the impulse is harder to manage with traditional recoil control technique common for NA shooters, due to the duration.

I absolutely love my modernized PTR-91. I did not go the SPUHR route because $$$, I do however have the newer version that comes with the welded rail and 1/10 twist 18" barrel, I replaced the stock with the magpul PRS stock, extended m-lok handguard, Magpul MVG vertical grip, Harris S-BRM bipod, and a 1-8x LPVO. It's more of a marksman setup and weighs quite a bit, I do get better accuracy with 175gr berger OTM tactical match ammo over regular 140-150gr ball ammo, I have not tried any other 175gr ammo though so I don't exactly have a good control group to base that on. The magpul PRS stock makes a big difference imo as far as felt recoil goes, but maybe that's a placebo, as any stock beats the original or collapsible stock. I really wish PTR made a version with a cold hammer forged barrel.

What I found out is that the G3 can compete with modern rifles provided you spent a few hundred more dollars on it. However, to me the biggest issue is not recoil, its weight. The best I could do with this rifle with 9.6 lbs or 10 lbs with optics and all.
