From what I can tell, even the repainters agree. It's just that a lot of salvaged furniture isn't real wood, or is just peeled veneer/ doesn't look good raw. When they get real wood, they don't seem to paint it, thankfully.

There's two types of people: the "paint everything" crowd and the "painting over wood is sacrilege" crowd. I'm just happy any time a piece is kept from a landfill for a while longer. If painting it keeps it in use another five years, and then someone buys it and restores it for another five years of use, that's ten years it wasn't in a landfill! This is a beautiful restoration and anyone who loves the natural wood look would be happy to have it in their home ❤

@knmplans

Exactly! Who cares so long as it keeps the piece in use. Plus, watching so many of these videos I’ve learned sometimes wood gets damaged to the point it’ll never be aesthetically pleasing even if it’s still very functional. I myself don’t have the skills to remake and replace those parts. I could manage painting them though. So there’s good reasons to enjoy both styles. I personally like a mix. Just brought my newly painted nightstand into my bedroom tonight! Mine was really beat up, damaged during a few moves. My husband’s was fine. I painted mine and left his. Everyone’s happy and it all still looks great together.

Some pieces it’s sad to see painted but all wood pieces aren’t created equal. Just because something is wood doesn’t mean it’s a quality piece. There are furniture pieces that aren’t well built and it’s not the end of the world if that pine 70’s piece is painted.

I love how you repeated the tapered rice grain shape of the new wooden handles that was found in the original handle. Speaking as a former art school student, It really ties everything together and makes the whole piece look more cohesive. I feel like the new piece would look really nice as a hutch for storing plates, cutlery, tablecloths, etc in a dining room

Absolutely gorgeous. The original craftsman would be proud of this restore. The handles are awesome. I would have bought a set but your solution made this a work of art! Preparation and skill are required for furniture restores. Painting chalk paint on a glossy surface, no matter what you’ve read, is always a bad idea. The finish will eventually lift. This furniture cognoscente never fails to deliver! His furniture wizardry truly astounds you because he brings to life those neglected and ramshackled furnitures. His competence goes beyond restoration -- he is a very methodical man who keeps everything clutter-free, orderly, spic-and span and systematic (e.g bottle for used screws; boxes for sponges from unwanted foam cushions, etc). Truly clever. He does not leave any stone unturned and make sure even the tiniest of cracks are filled and leveled; the hard wares are carefully scruffed and given the utmost attention it deserves. Plus the fact that he made those fabulous cabinet handles from scratch that truly look like it belong there originally. This guy is truly a craftsman in every sense of the word. Finally someone who knows what they are doing. Sands in direction of wood. Who would have thunk it. Used paint thinner to clean the surface(Bravo!) instead of Krud Kutter. I would have used a gel formula to deepen the color as oil stains fill up the pores thereby limiting color deposit. Not to take away from what you chose. It is like art, right. Just my preference.

Wow it looks so beautiful! I'm so glad I watched this, I have never thought about using socks before and that is genius! The foam thing was such a good idea too.
