There is also an Italian version of this. Fiore has it in his Medieval manual and calls it "Abrazare", and it includes guards against punches, kicks (and also employs them), and includes a lot of breaks and dislocations. One of the best schools for it is here in the UK, a HEMA group known as "The Exiles".

@Mr-Tibbster

@@AlekseyMaksimovichPeshkov Depends how we define HEMA at this point. In the Medieval manuscripts, I don't know of ground fighting methods, probably because the logic was, once that happens you're dead anyway (daggers, etc). But if we consider some traditional wrestling arts as part of HEMA, then we can say there are ground fighting systems. Arts such as Catch-as-Can grappling, which is a traditional English grappling system, it focuses on standing game, but has ground fighting methods too.

So, I do more Italian Medieval Wrestling (Fiore dei Liberi's "Abrazare") and what I find interesting when put in conjunction with Ringen is just how much both are similar to other Wrestling/Grappling techniques from around the world and through time. Recently I saw a video of a modern Wrestler and a Judoka sparring and I was surprised with how similar the techniques were to what I do, as well as what they've shown in this video. There will always be debates on which style is better, with even very strong and convincing evidence, but it's cool to know that a lot of them share similar techniques that are clearly effective.

Yes but, the ringen they are talking about IS time specific, the problem is that, since everyone was doing it they never settled for a name to it. In fact "war wrestling" at that time existed trought Europe in its entirety, and every culture had a different name for it....all of them roughly translate to wrestling, seems that it's easier to give it a generic name than dealing with having to wrap your head around every single name for every single school of it around an entire continent.

The old style of german style wrestling has ended in early 18th century, when the last manual was written. A lot of german traditions died for the reason of the terrible 30years war, and after this war French baroque culture came to Germany, so that upper class men no more liked activities which caused sweat.

It's so easy to miss these in my subscriptions, I really wish you guys would have a more identifiable thumbnail in your videos lately. Some MR videos have easy to spot thumbnails and others don't

20:34 I don't know why, I just find the way Kyle says "yes" hilarious. Like he sounds like he's almost going "indeed" and that he's seriously going to enjoy doing it.

Impressive how martial arts are historically linked to each other, as many of the movements in this demonstration reminded me a little of judo.

Interesting, I've only done Jiu Jitsu as far grappling goes but I can't help to notice how different the roll is, I was always taught to not roll directly on the spine as shown here but kind of to the side on the squishy parts to avoid potentially damaging the spine on the concrete, though it was a course mainly intended for cops, security guards etc so I suppose that they're teaching under a modernized context as opposed to back in the day when they layered their clothing as they would in this form of wrestling P.S. not a cop or anything just wanted to learn to flip people and stuff
