Kevin of Modern Self Reliance digs deep, using the EcoFlow to power his jackhammer, blasting through clay and rock to clear out thousands of pounds of dirt and build a 10 x 10' hidden room underground!
Using the EcoFllow to power his drill and tools, Kevin is able to secure his underground bunker safely, building a wooden frame to add stability and style: his underground bunker feels like home thanks to EcoFlow!
Underground lighting to work safely is no problem, with EcoFlow portable power.
I build an authentic Japanese military spider fox hole with just a few basic tools including a small army shovel, some metal buckets, and some rough saw timbers to help create a safe place to sleep overnight in case of impending war.
A spider hole is mirrors the hole created by a trapdoor spider who will tunnel and then cover the top of the door to conceal itself.
A spider hole is usually shoulder-deep, and round, protective enough to camouflaged lid a solder from attack. A soldier will be able to stand upright and then fire a weapon without being overly exposed. A spider hole is different than a foxhole in that a foxhole is usually deeper and designed to hide or conceal a fighter.
A spider hole is usually hastily dug, whereas a foxhole is done with more care.
Spider holes were used during World War II by Japanese. Saddam Hussein during the Iraq war was captured hiding in a spider hole.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

Kev, had you considered a static rope between the two exits? Like have it attached to the top of the tunnel so you can just lay down and kind of rope climb/abseil up and down the tunnel with a railing kind of contraption above the entry inside?

I think if you add a bar to the ceiling above the hole entrance, you can use it to pull yourself out of the hole, and allow you to swing your feet down. That would make using it as an entrance more feasible.

You should totally put a locking mechanism on the inside of the space and you should put some sort of metal locking grate on the outside to make it look more official and to keep animals and other people out. This is so amazing can not wait to see what else you do.

A great addition to the spider hole compound. On the underside of the red rocket where you have the side wheels mounted, mount an eye bolt to the ends that way the cart can be pulled back and forth. And it might help going uphill to have something to pull towards the room. Thanks for your content.
@ghomerhust

i absolutely agree. an eyelet on each end of the cart, and a rope on 2 pulleys at either end of the track, then it could be pulled both directions, great for moving items on the cart, and possibly even to pull yourself along via the opposing direction's rope.

I think covering to top portion of your spider hole with a plastic tarp was a good idea to help with water proofing a little better, but without waterproofing the entrance and all four walls the wood going to rot and mold overtime . Not to mention if any animals get in and die down there. There's definitely going to be a miasma of stale air in your spider hole at some point.

Apparently, many viewers are interested in the construction of underground rooms, room complexes, etc. You have good ideas and know how to use good techniques that facilitate the construction of rooms and later comfortable use. The intrusion of surface water and/or rain (melted snow) into the building can be a problem, how to prevent or remove it. And of course, next to ventilation, heating and insulation, a toilet is very important. Good luck, I'm looking forward to the next videos on this. Greetings from Estonia!

you can put a handle above the door to your emergency exit, almost like a pull up bar(make sure it can hold the weight of a full grown adult) that way if you want to go in foot first or if you use it as an entrance to your base you can either go on your back, or just flip on your back at the end and pull yourself up out of the hole using the handle so that you can still use the ladder foot first

Miasma used in a sentace: There was a great deal of miasma coming from the spider hole after farting in it. Perhaps a bit of a french drain at the outside end of the escape pipe might prevent a face full of water when exiting when there is rain or water at the end of that pipe.. I know, more digging. Great project!

Earlier this evening, I got close up and personal with some Robertson screws. I wanted to remove a shelf set from the kneehole of a desk, while the desk was against a wall. I would not have been able to loosen the screws in the tight and awkward space if they had been other than Robertson screws. Mission accomplished. I am a fan. The desk was custom built in the USA over 20 years ago. My only other encounter with Robertson screws was in a motorhome that had been fitted out in Canada. The manufacturer thoughtfully included the screwdriver to fit them.

As a bonafide US citizen I will express my preference for the Robertson screw over the Phillips design. Years ago while on a framing crew I learned of the superiority of the Robertson screw for ease of use, especially when the screw needed to be backed out of the wood. Mount a stationary rope at the top of the pipe for escapees to use to pull themselves through.

A decoy/false inlet upslope nearby in an obvious low spot would further reduce the question of a random pipe outlet on a slope, as people would wonder it’s source.. even cooler would be diversion of a spring seep or natural water source into the pipe to provide a trickle to help explain the use of the pipe to the curious. This water thru the pipe may help cool the shelter as well.

I would say add a bar above the entrance (inside bunker) so you can get out safer if you go head first. Second I would put a rope in but i would put it running underneath the track so you can still use the tunnel for bigger people (less risk of hitting the guideline or anchors)

Could try to add some sheet metal to the sides/floor of the roller escape hole might make it smoother.

Wow, you could not pay me to go down there but kudos to you for creating it and being brave (crazy?) enough to go down.

It could be used as a entrance just go in feet first and push yourself backwards, and a way to know when you're at the end put some type of place marker to show how far you are from the inside

You will get mold growing fast with that humidity and all that wood. Maybe some type of 12v RV fan to move a bunch of air and a big bucket of silica beads. Two pipes with 90°elbows on them sticking upwards is something they do for air in underground bunkers. You can hide them in anything even an old stump Hogans Heros style! Also if you had a lift handle above the tunnel inside the box you could roll over grab it and pull yourself up and out of the tube easily.

for getting out quicker, you could get a pulling rope on the ceiling or floor of the tunnel

I can see an Ecoflow powered rail system where you push a button and zoom, you automatically ride the rail to either end. Since it will be, way, way easier to get out of the tunnel if you are on your back on the sled where you can just sit up at the end and climb out a ladder,. You could attach a rope to the top of the tunnel to pull your way along either direction, until the motorized escape rail is up and running,😀 Nice job.

Put a handle in the bunker on the ceiling just inside the escape door. You can slide head first on your back and grab the handle to get down.

Great series.if you go on to your back. Put a heavy duty handle bar over each exit to pull your self up and out or to climb into and lay on your back. Way more efficient

You could try putting some overhead handholds into the ceiling or just above the door, to steady yourself or help pull yourself out, if you do happen to come into the spider hole from the tunnel.

You need to add a rope to the end of the cart so you can pull it back topside if necessary.. IMO..

just a small idea, but if you add some sort of bar above the door of the hatch, you can roll over and use the bar to pull your legs out and onto the ladder? like a pull up bar of sorts

Can Glue little flaps, blocks of wood, or handles on the top of exit hole, so you can lay on your back and quickly pull and push through. ☺️👍
