I cut down dead pine trees that are on my 40 acre property to build a log cabin sugar shack that will house a maple sap boiler so we can enjoy some delicious maple syrup in the spring.
With the help of my chainsaw, I'll cut down all the overgrown and shaded out dead pines which I will cut into log to build a sugar shack. The pines in this replanted forest are fat too overgrown and have been grossly mismanaged. The trees should have be cut and thinned nearly a decade ago. Removing the dead trees is a good start to rehabilitating the forest. Later, we will thin even more and get the forest ready for replanting and rejuvenating.
We will mostly be cutting trees and then getting the site chosen. It's a lot of tree felling, and hauling to get our raw materials.
With the help of my chainsaw, I'll cut down all the overgrown and shaded out dead pines which I will cut into log to build a sugar shack. The pines in this replanted forest are fat too overgrown and have been grossly mismanaged. The trees should have be cut and thinned nearly a decade ago. Removing the dead trees is a good start to rehabilitating the forest. Later, we will thin even more and get the forest ready for replanting and rejuvenating.
In this part, we will start building the log cabin from the foundation up. I will use the butt-and-pass method which laps one row of logs over the other, while fastening the logs together with spikes. This is simpler and quicker because it does not require the tedious work of scribing each log and notching.
A butt-and-pass corner joint on a log home creates the look of a rustic, old-fashioned cabin. As the logs are laid to create the outside corners of the building, the first log on each layer extends past the corner, and the log forming the other wall butts into the first. As the timbers are laid to build up the corner, the extended logs alternate for an effect that resembles interlaced fingers.
We will continue to erect the log cabin walls from the foundation up. I will use the butt-and-pass method which laps one row of logs over the other, while fastening the logs together with spikes. This is simpler and quicker because it does not require the tedious work of scribing each log and notching.
We milled all the roof strapping with our portable sawmill. The log cabin is intended to be used as a sugar shack where we can boil fresh maple sap and turn it into delicious maple syrup. The log cabin is being built on a large track of private land as part of a homestead. We have built other buildings such as the main cabin, the outhouse, the small cube, the root cellar and even dug a pond.

Watching that made me envious. I envisioned a time before the industrial revolution when life was simpler and all man wanted was to enjoy a peaceful existence, be one with nature, and be left alone. Makes me think of the work that went into building my brothers home in Maine. The house is from 1799 and the inside beams are exposed and it clearly shows the massive logs that were hand dressed with axes or some other types of tools as the tool marks and the uneven chunks carved from each log can be clearly seen. The squared logs in the ceiling are held together with pegs and are all over the house. The outside is clapboard and doesn’t reveal the actual construction and age of the place but the way house sits on the hill it has the look of an old cabin that’s been there for centuries. When I’m laying in bed at night looking at the ceiling I think of those revolutionary war era pioneers who built this house from the woods that used to be in the open fields surrounding it and imagine the hardships of those cold winters and harsh conditions for survival. Watching you build this small cabin with power tools makes it look easy next to what they did with hand tools and no electricity and managed to build a house perhaps 5-6 times the size of this little cabin. And what you did here is no easy task at that! Great job!

And when you gotta take a dump at 2AM and it’s 5° outside, your sentiments will change. Be prepared for frozen pipes, 3 ft of snow in front of your door, chopping wood, lots of it. You get up there, and animals damaged / chewed up parts of your house, dead inside stinking the place up. Everyone loves this until they actually experience it.

Logs tend to shrink and expand ("breath") to up to 6-8% during the year and during the use. When house is not used, logs are getting moisture and expand, when house is used (stove is lit) logs dry and shrink. Please note that this is not "logs can shrink and expand", this is "logs will 100% shrink and expand". So all the things described below WILL happen, not COULD happen. In your case the following will happen rather quickly. Nails connecting logs vertically will loosen, walls will loose structural integrity and will deform. Logs will shrink and will hang on window frame - either having huge gaps between them or just smashing window frame. Same for the door frame - door will stuck so hard, that the only way to get inside would be to cut the door off. Roof frame will deform. Cement you've used to fill the gaps between logs will crack and fall apart. Thus, you needed to: 1. Make sure to have gap above window frame (at least 8 cm in your case) and above door frame (at least 15 cm in your case). This should then be filled with some soft insulation like moss, synthetic foam, etc. 2. Window and door frames should be connected to walls with spike grooves or sliding metal connectors. 3. Roof frame should be connected to walls with sliding metal connector. 4. Logs should have spike grooves for the whole length to let every next row to more securely sit on the previous row and to decrease gaps. Gaps are filled with some soft insulator, like moss, jute, etc. 5. Logs should be connected with wooden nails connecting three rows of logs. This secures vertical integrity and make sure walls stay vertical while "breathing". 6. Logs should have proper connection carved in corners to make sure walls are securely connected to each other and to decrease gaps. In short, you've done a huge job, but sadly, your house will fall apart shortly. Considering the weight of wood it has, it is very dangerous to stay inside.

One thing the old timers always did to the log cabins( that we seem to forgotten overtime) was to paint the ends of your new logs. (The old timers used a white paint.) it kept the logs from checking in cracking!

Solar panels in the woods - not a whole lot of sun would get through. Resin or hard glue is too rigid between the logs. They might even have trouble with the mortar but that is a traditional way to do it. There is a product out on the market that looks like the mortar but stays somewhat flexible so the drying and shrinking of the lots doesn't break it. The logs may be from dead trees but they are still damp from being in the snow etc.

I have never seen that way to build a log cabin. Simple chainsaw notching without trying for perfection yields a faster build, easier chinking and no or little need for huge spikes and re-bar pieces.. However... wowzers the roof build was very well executed!! . Nice results all round. Very good

I like the build. I question the foundation on resting on wood rounds in the dirt, and there seems to be no moisture barrier between the dirt and the floor, or at least enough vertical clearance to prevent wood rot. There is a reason why logs are notched. There is a reason why people use wooden nails connecting every three logs, not just metal nails. There is a reason why people are not using fixed connectors while connecting window, door and roof frame to log walls. There is a reason why people tend to leave the gap above the door and window frame. And this reason is: logs are "breathing" - dry and shrink, getting moisture and expand. And this process will never end, even after 100 years.

I'm currently working on a cutting prescription in Colorado pine forests, also thinning overgrown woods. our site sponsor actually encourages us to leave some dead trees as they provide important habitats for a variety of animals. don't know if you want to encourage that on your property or not but it might be something to look into with regards to wildlife in your area. I know I've seen a couple woodpeckers on the dead standing trees we've left behind

I own about 4 acres of land behind my house and I've already cut a nice path to an opened area I cleared out. I want to build a two story workshop/art studio. I want to make it look like something from the medieval times. It also has to have a spiral staircase to lead to the second floor.

Probably, the reason is the same as why they haven't left the gap above window and door frames, and why they have used "fixed" filler to fill the gaps between logs. This reason is called - guys just don't know specifics of the material they work with. While been one of the oldest materials, logs are one of the most tricky material to use as it "breaths" - shrinks and expands - for the whole life of the house.

The logs were caked in Ice when we started. The logs are sitting on 4 rot resistant stumps.

Doesn’t look like you put any kind of barrier down between the floor and earth bugs are going to love the wood yum yum - did you use any kind of caulking between the logs forming the walls? Critters are going get under the house too -

То, что брёвна не ошкурили - это самая меньшая проблема. Они это поймут, когда после долгого отсутствия протопят дом и у них заклинит дверь, раздавит окно и деформируется крыша. Ну и стены, закрепленные гвоздями по два ряда, уже очень скоро покосятся.

I’ve seen many of these videos. The best ones I’ve seen is building from scratch without power tools or mechanical help. I follow Alex Wild, in Europe. Hand built. I love the way he cooks his meals at the end of his hard working day. So cosy. So interesting.

Цемент развалится. Мхом заделывают щели в том числе потому, что он позволяет дому садиться (и расширяться, напитываясь влагой, пока не топится). Тут вообще нарушены все правила строительства. Такое ощущение, что строят не из живого материала, а из кирпича.

Great experience that must have been for these guys, and a gift to watch. Thanks for sharing. Before two years pass, this beautiful cabin is going to be used as the toolshed. It just wasn't made in mind for people to stay in it. No need to list the many reasons, as I'm sure these great guys are aware (or soon will be). Shoot, maybe it wasn't ever intended for people to live in, I can't just assume.
