One of my favorite opening songs to any album ever. Perfect introduction to the sprawling masterpiece that is The Lonesome Crowded West. A full album reaction to it would be fantastic. I think it’s one of the most creative, well written, and unique indie rock records of all time. Modest Mouse’s early shit was just on another level. Thank you for reacting to this one.

modest mouse is probably my favorite band. Id recommend literally anything off of their first 4 albums (long drive, lonesome crowded west, moon & antarctica and good news) or the building nothing out of something compilation.

This song kicks off their album “The Lonesome Crowded West” and is the album that Pitchfork gave a perfect 10/10 score to as well. I absolutely love Modest Mouse.

My favorite album all time, as you can see by my profile picture. It's borderline prophetic seeing where we are now. It was great then, and it's only aged better.

Having only listened to it for the first time about a year ago I second you on the prophetic point, shit nearly gave me an existential breakdown considering how something written 25 years ago could be so unbelievably on point in regards to modern society

Great reaction and analysis especially, really great to see someone who actually understands the meaning behind lyrics/ puts the effort in to dissect the words.

When I think of the "Take 'em all for the sense of happiness That comes from hurting deep down inside" part, what springs to mind is Bret Easton Ellis' quote on American Psycho: "Bateman was crazy the same way I was. He did not come out of me sitting down and wanting to write a grand sweeping indictment of yuppie culture. It initiated because of my own isolation and alienation at a point in my life. I was living like Patrick Bateman. I was slipping into a consumerist kind of void that was supposed to give me confidence and make me feel good about myself but just made me feel worse and worse and worse about myself. That is where the tension of American Psycho came from."

If I were dictator, Isaac Brock would be Poet Laureate of the United States. He has this unrelentingly blue-collar, earthy vibe to his writing that's also multifaceted, deeply introspective, bleak as shit, esoteric sometimes, and philosophical in such an unpretentious, unassuming way. Easily my all-time favorite lyricist who just oozes a sort of true, authentic Americana like no one else. (Also, he happened to lead one of the finest indie rock bands to ever exist.)

The "from the top of the ocean, to the bottom of the sky" verse is deceptively complex. Ocean and sky are both vast, but where they meet - the horizon - is a tiny sliver of a line. It's really all right there. The thesis for the whole song, the whole album. 'The Lonesome Crowded West' - the West is vast, the Pacific is vast - and where they both meet is the majority of that region's population packed into the tiny horizon line where the two meet.

Dudes you listened to our request bro.... and i caught it somehow 3 days after you posted. Yo dog i don't want to alarm you but you are just scratching the surface... Any song off of This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About (1996) The Lonesome Crowded West (1997) The Moon & Antarctica (2000) And Building nothing out of Something (2000) Everything after these albums is sell out radio garbage. The Moon and Antarctica was the high water mark of this band, the whole album is as good as Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon in terms of complexity and completeness. my thoughts... thanks bud! cheers

The second best album of the 90s. (In the Aeroplane Over the Sea just edges it out). How the hell could they top this song? Any other band would have closed the album with it because it’s so damn good, logically nothing could follow it. Some how Modest Mouse keeps the quality of this song throughout the whole album. 19/10. If you don’t end up doing the whole album at least check out. Doin the Cockroach
