Women should dress in a way not to tempt men. Most men have to go out in public to work, and have to deal with such women exposing their nakedness and shoving their private area in their face. It’s violating. . It causes sin. I learned this growing up and it's a shame that this generation has not.

I do my best to do this. But whether it is at work, or woman in front of me in the pew, and there is nothing left to the imagination (which is also sinful on my part), I struggle. Father I brought up in Kerala India , it is a hot country. We never ever go to church with out covering up our body (man and women including youth/ teenagers ) and veil. I am so proud of the culture I brought up like this and till today practicing in our church in Kerala. When I arrived to Australia few years ago it was just opposite but I continued my veil and proper dress code in the church , I am alone most of the time in daily mass and Sunday mass dressed up like this and especially with veil but I thought I need to only look at Jesus and give reverence to my Lord and not going to look at the people what they think!! I enjoy every moment in the mass , looking up only Jesus on the Alter. I feel so respected to my body Jesus has given to me , the temple of Holy Spirit. I love my Catholic faith , I love my Jesus above all , I love my Mother Mary. Thanks a lot Fr Chris, I wish everyone listen and take it seriously this matter . Our Jesus is so sad to see this. Back in the 70s and 80s I asked a Priest about why we weren't wearing veils or hats which went out when the Novus Ordo Mass came in. The Priest let me believe it was about equality between Men and Women, I was in my late teens and early 20s and followed along like everyone else being led by the Parish PRIESTS. I can't believe I blindly followed all the changes too Mass, too Holy Communion in the hand and didn't stop for even a minute to realise what was happening to Jesus. How the people were elevated and holy Reverance was very much removed. No more genuflecting, just a slight bow. My eyes remained shut until the Co-vid lockdowns when I started to research, after praying to the Holy Spirit for discernment and knowledge, and praying the Holy Rosary Daily. It is only when we consistently read God's Holy Word daily and pray the Holy Rosary Daily that the truth becomes illuminated. We must stay very close to God.🙏💕💖
@geriforbes4013 Жыл бұрын
And think about it, in those days there was no other guidance available than the priest who was your own pastor or associate. There was no you tube or internet, so you might have had access to solid Catholic teaching. So while the world was going crazy, many of our priests were also confused as to where the Church was headed. We have to pray for our priests, that they stay very close to the Blessed Mother, and that She will guide and protect everything they do and say.@@vievee2000

Father! Thanks for pointing out the veil. I started wearing a veil about 6 years ago. While discerning if I would or not I had it in my purse for about 6 months. I was afraid to be a focus of attention but one day I said to myself “either wear it or put it away right now, enough!” That first time I felt more in the mass than ever before. I don’t care if I’m the only one that day, I wear it for Our Lady! If you are discerning wearing the veil: is not about being “holier than anyone else” or about the looks, to me it’s all about paying my respects to Our Lord and Lady while inside the church where He is present in the tabernacle. God bless.

I can’t adequately express how much I have learned from your ‘Back to Seminary’ sessions, especially your willingness to tackle subjects that are sensitive in our culture. Today’s topic of immodesty is a bombshell - everybody is scared to death to even say the word. Extreme immodesty is a serious issue today and radical feminism is largely responsible.
@Fiona2254 Жыл бұрын
It’s terrible that when you mention that we should be modest in church of all places people’s first instinct is to say “is the fault of men if they eyes are wandering and looking at my exposed chest” my answer is always: “If I’m a woman, happily married, and my eyes see that then a man has zero chance to not notice it. We don’t dress to please ourselves, we dress for others so if you are dressing with a plunging neckline is because you want to highlight the cleavage. So yes you should consider how men look at you of all places in church. Have a little respect for the married men, the priest and the young men who are supposed to be chaste and for the other women who don’t want to see your “wares” while trying to pray in church.” Is harsh but it needs to be said.

My priest made a polite remark to a female parishioner to dress modestly when she attends mass. She complained to the archdiocese who then told our priest not to talk to parishioners about their inappropriate attire. Since he isn't permitted I do it for him. I remind both men and women to cover up not only when they attend mass but everyday of the week. I have on many occasions reminded men to wear long pants to Mass. They feel the need to give me the same tired middle school excuses. The women just get angry. I tell them anyway. The archdiocese can tell a priest to stand down but I will not. Additionally, my wife dresses modestly when at home. I don't want her to dress immodestly at home either.

Very helpful talk, Father Chris. When my daughter would ask about modesty and what was acceptable to wear or not, or when she would quote what her friends had to say about their fashion choices, I would explain, "Yes, your body is beautiful and it is nothing shameful, however, it's not for everyone to see. Only a very few people should ever see some parts of your body, and that is because it is so beautiful and sacred." She just turned 27 last week, and I find that as an adult she is both very fashionable and beautifully modest in all she chooses to wear.

As the priest walked passed me at the end of mass a lady came into the pew in front of me and asked if I'd ever considered wearing a veil as she had 4 new ones in her bag. The priest hadn't got to the back of the church. Talk about having your prayer answered. A few months later after having worn a veil in church since that day I asked for confirmation and I heard "What bride comes to her groom not wearing a veil?" At that time as a convert I didn't understand the mass was a wedding feast. Your not allowed into pubs and other venues without a certain dress code. Today, I am happy to learn that mass is a wedding feast. THANK YOU!!! I tell my 7 years old daughter and 9 years old son that we appropriately dress not only because our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost but also because at mass we must show reverence to the King of kings. I tell them if you are invited by the king of England, for instance, you will appropriately dress and follow the dress code. So, why would you show reverence to a mortal king and not to the King of kings, the Lord of lords, who is eternal and care so much about you? Believe me, every Sunday, my children make sure they are dressed up. Now, I get to them that we are going to a wedding feast. God bless you, Fr. Chris.

I learned something new today about the mantilla from you Father Chris. A few weeks ago, Father Anthony spoke about head covering as a sign of wanting to be humble, which is one of the reasons I’ve adopted the habit of covering my head in church. Our old Catholic School uniforms included a skull cap and when we went to confession or Mass with our class we had to wear them. If we didn’t have them, the nuns would pin Kleenex on our heads. I remember when it changed, in 1983, it head coverings were lost before then. Another thing: Catholic brides, never had their arms uncovered, in addition to wearing a veil.

Dear Fr Chris, I’m glad you’re teaching about modesty in church, because, I’m so much bothered with so much immodesty, seeing people wearing like they’re going to the beach!!! 😲😯🫣 After Vatican II, most old Catholic practices had drastically changed, but in my family, we never changed, we still continued praying our Rosaries, wearing our church veils upon our heads, with nice church clothes and shoes !!! I grew up like that, respecting our Almighty God by presenting ourselves respectfully and modestly when attending Holy Mass because we respect our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament !!! 🙏

@@tanyac.9005 growing up attending Catholic school. We had a little navy blue beanie that we were expected to wear on first Thursday when they took us to confession and first Friday. Sometimes it was part of the homework assignment on Wednesday night to remember to bring it for Thursday and Friday. If you did not have your head covering, the nuns did one of two things they made you wear your regular winter hat, or they would place a clean tissue on your head with a bobby pin. I know that sounds silly, but it was a reminder that your head needed to be covered. These were just different days when you did not pass at church without making the sign of the cross, or when you passed a priest or nun on the street, a man would tip his hat, as children, we were taught to say good morning father/sister. I miss those days. Thank goodness that all of these wonderful lessons bring all these memories, and hopefully respectful habits back to the top of my mind.

Yes the priests are right and help articulate something that we lay folks know all too well, that modesty is not a dirty word, that some folks have bought into the lie that freedom means doing whatever you want, and that to be a true "woman" means "if you got it, flaunt it," in other words, a reduction of human dignity to well-proportioned body parts.
@AnneChandler-zy3uk7 ай бұрын
So sad this all needs to be spelled out, but it is so obviously needed. It is a challenge to find modest clothes these days, but buying modest clothes is the best way to send a message to the manufacturers. The less “material” they have to use, the greater their monetary profit. That practice needs to be snipped in the bud by the customers.

Thank you Fr. Chris for tackling this subject -unheard of from a pulpit in my 70+ years ! My husband and I don't agree with Thomas Aquinas in that a woman can dress immodestly, with a low neckline , in public, (is the key ) to please her husband -it may please the other men in her presence too-is she not responsible for any lust she may cause even if her husband enjoys her dressed like this ? This "loop hole" would include mini skirts for those husbands who like legs showing.. I prefer to listen to our Lady of Fatima and of Our Lady of Good Success. The Virtue of Modesty can be described as how we want other women to dress and act when alone with our sons, husbands and priests. This works for men too . Is it okay to lust at the beach ? Our bathing suits and mini skirts in my younger generation , the late 60's were immodest ..only my grandmother, born in 1880 , opposed my mini skirts. My Dad send my mail order bikini back to Sears before I ever received it, when I was a teen. I waited for it all summer, then he told me he sent it back ! I borrowed one from a friend . Lord have mercy and teach us true appreciation of our bodies , which allowed us to have seven handsome sons and two beautiful daughters , after we learned to follow the teaching of the RC Church .

Dear Father Chris, Thank you for teaching on this important virtue. The idea right at the end of your talk was brilliant. You compared going to mass with going to a wedding. Jesus is the groom & the church, us , his people, are the bride of Christ. So we should dress appropriately for this special occasion. All your talks are so helpful. Thank you so much for being a great teacher of the faith. You are a blessing to the Catholic Church. Thank you from Wales.

I am guilty of immodestly, in my younger years, I’m now finding beautiful dresses at thrift stores. Reminds me of the 50 & 60s retro look. Covers everything and more comfortable than anything in the store Then I decided thru much prayers & I’m now Veiling at Mass. It was put upon my heart, and I’m still shy about it but happy to have the choice Bless you Fa Chris for your Talks 🙏🏻

Here in the UK, we have people letting their 14, 15 year old daughters walk around in summer with their bums hanging out cut off denim shorts...they head off down the beach, some ask people to go into the wine shop for them first. It's scary; I wonder whether their mothers, being 'good, liberated' parents, would take them to have any unwanted pregnancy sorted at the drop of a hat?

From South Africa...thank you dear Fr Chris..this has been a great worry and concern on my mind. Our priests do not talk on this. Priests are scared to speak the truth and follow in the way of Christ. It is heartbreaking to see such horrible attire in our Cathedrals and churches around. Does this not mean closing your eyes to the exploits of the devil. We continue to pray for the conversion of our women, mothers and young girls and for strong faithful shepherds in the Church of Christ. Jesus I Trust in You.🙏

I grew up in a catholic family with a virtuous grandmother. Modesty in speech behavior and dress was "a dogma". When I came to Canada, I noticed the irreverence in dress and behavior in church, I asked the parish priest why it was allowed. His reply astounded me..."we are not allowed to make reference to this as they will refrain from attending the service"

Whether married or not, I disagree with the low cut top. Very contradictory. Cover up, especially at Mass. (Regarding Priest's mom dressing for her husband). It could still cause someone to lust, and apparently the one asking was a bit scandalized too. The Vatican gave. Guidelines on what is modest. " Dressing with Dignity" by Colleen Hammond is an excellent resource.

God gave me the call to the veil use on March 25th 2021, and the call to modesty on May 13 2021. No coincidence with our Mother's message that I heard months after I've started modesty. To me it been to dress modest at all time and place. I got rid of all my unmodest clothes.

This is so key to repairing our culture, our lives and relationship with God. Thank you so much, Fr. Alar for this talk. You asked how we dress for a wedding and showed women wearing veils - so beautiful and respectful as Jesus in 1Corinthians 11 instructs us to do when honoring and worshipping Him. Cover our hair, a source of pride along with our best, respectful clothing. With all the hurt and fear in the world today, I am so grateful for the Divine Mercy RSVCE Bible I received, reminding me of God's love and mercy in all situations, places and time. God bless and protect you. 🙏🕊💐

My local parish church started posting the appropriate attire for mass brochure around 8 years ago cos people were coming to church in different state of the day. Some came in their sleeping clothes & revealing clothes, luckily none came in their swimming suit to church. While we might have a hot climate, it doesn't mean you should come to mass in very inappropriate attire cos you're coming to the table to feast with God. I try to dress up for mass at least in jeans & a plain blouse as I grown older & I'm quite tempted to wear the mantilla to church as some of the older parishioners are doing. These 60-80++ years old aunties/grandmothers are really dressing better than their kids or grandkids. I really admire how the dress up for church

Thank you father Chris for what is right and just! Ive been Catholic for 6 years. This summer at Sunday mass i had a mom and her 3 teenaged daughters come in to the pew in front of me. I was really fighting feelings of distress most of the mass. The girls had short shorts on that were as brief as underwear.😢 what i came to understand was that modesty that appears outward in dress and appearance is reallt just a physical manifestation of our heart and love for God. I continue to veil, kneel to receive on the tongue even though i am the only one. Some parish member asked me uf i was a nun😂 i told her i wanted to be but i was told i was too old. Anyway, pray, draw close to God and what we call modesty will become part of who you are as you love God wirh alk your heart❤
