Great car. The GTX3071 is a perfect choice. It's a great fit for the engine size and rpm range, and it offers pretty much the broadest usable range available, aka torque band. Excellent. +1 for E85, woo! Great choice on engine parts too. You did your homework well over the years. JE is a great piston manufacturer. Their production facility is awesome. I'll say this about adjust dampers, at least single adjustable dampers. Adjustable suspension is a fallacy in that you can tweak it for comfort or sport. Adjustable suspension exists to let you set the damper to an arbitrary spring rate (within the range that the damper supports). Comfort is selecting a soft spring, not selecting a low damper setting. Sport is selecting a stiff spring and setting the damper correct to that spring. There is only one best damper setting for a given spring. If you set the damper low, you just get a bouncy ride. If you set the damper high, you start getting tire contact problems over bumps. There is only one best damper setting, period. Once you get into double adjustable dampers or 3 or 4 way dampers, this changes. You now have the ability to tweak only rebound or only compression or target only low speed or only high speed damping. Now and only now is damping adjustable where you can tweak in or out comfort or handling crispness and change how the damper controls chassis motion and bounce. 99.999% of the people with aftermarket dampers just don't pay for these higher end dampers, so revert back to paragraph one. I will note that you may choose a compromised setting for the sake of use on a surface that isn't appropriate for the damper setup. For example, a damper will very, very low compression damping may be set extra high just to bring in some compression resistance despite gaining some traction problems over rougher surfaces. Or, a person may go overly soft with a damper with high compression damping to keep the ride comfortable over harsh roads despite adding a lot of extra chassis bounce and what I'll call "aloof" movements of just flopping around. They're compromises though in the end, and really you're set up wrong if you have to do it. You probably should have picked different spring rates or damper product to get the actual results you were aiming for.
@johnypiston9 жыл бұрын
+Xmvw2X Outstanding knowledge to come by. Thanks! Very useful and this before I spent the money ...
@Xmvw2X9 жыл бұрын
+Johny Piston No problem. Call it a byproduct of the hobby. It's hard not to learn a little over time. Suspension is one thing I've fiddled with a good bit. I've come to understand there's a lot of preference involved in how the damping is set up, but I've also come to realize there is also one, best setting for actually controlling the chassis. Now most of the control we typically associate with dampers is done during the rebound (extending) stroke. On most oem setups the compression stroke is set very, very mild, aka plush, to feel comfy going over bumps. Many aftermarket products are also reasonably comfy because this is what customers are used to and expect. So, most of the chassis motion is controlled by the rebound damping. The nice part is this doesn't really have an effect on ride comfort, but it will absolutely affect chassis bounciness after bumps. It can also affect odd behaviors like a bucking sensation when going over bumps. If rebound is set too low, you get this bounding and floppiness after bumps. If rebound is set too high, the tire will have problems getting back down to the ground after bumps. The car will actually feel like it's free falling a little after a big bump. So to minimize bounding after bumps (just a lot of extra chassis movement that's not needed) and tire contact problems, there is one setting or a very small range of setting that will work best. Everything above or below this is worse. Compression damping plays its role too, but a lot of this is determined by ride comfort, so it's often set really low. As you set this higher a couple things happen. First, the ride gets harsher on bump impact. We can split this into low speed and high speed damping. Low speed controls the chassis and provides handling responsiveness on steering turn in. If you've noticed on some cars you can turn the wheel and get instant response, the car probably has firmer low speed damping...as well as probably firmer bushings in the suspension, some suspension geometry that reduces body roll, and maybe a quicker steering rack. Really that's a lot of things at play, but low speed both controls chassis motion and can aid that rebound setting we talked about above to control the bounding too. However, the gain that's nice to have is handling responsiveness. You turn the wheel, and the car reacts faster. You turn quicker, and the car reacts faster. The high speed compression damping is what you feel for bump impacts. Less is generally better. If you have too much, the car can get knocked around a little. It's kind of akin to skipping a stone across water but instead of stone and water it's your car over bumps. And yes, you can get airborne and have tire contact problems. Too much compression damping is bad. You want low speed but not high speed compression damping. The best compromise is a damping profile with a lot of (relatively speaking) low speed compression damping and low high speed compression damping. When looking at descriptions of dampers you might see the words "digressive" or kinked profile where through design the manufacturer has aggressive low speed damping and then instead of a straight line on up, it's kinked or knocked down to provide a much slower ramp up of resistance into the higher speeds. You get the best of both worlds with this, good handling responsiveness but not the harshness. This is popular among manufacturers, but not everyone does it. If you want a good example of this, look at Fortune Auto. They design their dampers to be very digressive to provide the best compromise. Koni does this also and is hugely popular. What about digressive in rebound? Well, I don't know. I haven't tested this before, and there is some argument both ways about it. Frankly, I don't think it matters. Most of the time the damping profile in rebound is linear, and all you need is enough of it to prevent the extra bounding after bumps to keep the chassis from getting too busy over bumpy roads. You also want enough rebound in the back to keep from generating the "bucking" sensation some cars can get (stock STIs are known to have this (previous gens)). In the end, you just really want to buy a 3-way adjustable setup so you can really dial the thing in exactly how you like. Too bad that costs a lot of money.

That external wastegate sound from the interior.... reminds me of when I was running open BBK long tubes on my '89 Grand Marquis. Definitely has a way of announcing your presence! If the car is happy changing direction like Matt claimed, it's pretty well built for an early 2000s AWD platform, I guess! +TheSmokingTire That sound is completely normal, my STI sounds just like it(albeit with a much louder exhaust). It is caused by having an external turbo wastegate, that is dumped to atmosphere. Normally the wastegate gases, that are bypassing the turbo, are routed back into the exhaust and you don't hear it. When it is dumped to atmosphere, it's basically like an open exhaust once the wastegate starts to open.
