@mjbartending thanks this is really useful. I'm based in the UK and I bought a Cm 702 on eBay that came without washers but unfortunately Graef dont ship to the UK anymore. Do you have the dimensions of the washers so I can buy a standard commercial set of washers to replace it? Hi there, Sorry if I'm late to the party but I just got myself a Graef 702 and my results are currently terrible for espresso. Even at 1, it grinds like the coarsest setting... Thanks to you, I knew I had to use the washers but nothing worked. Maybe the circular grinding wheel is not properly seated, I'll try that but for now, I have to say that I'm puzzled by the grind I'm getting and don't really know what to do next...

Hi thank you for video, is this machine can capabble espresso and filter Coffee grind at same stup? How coarse can it grind when it is optimizaed for espresso?
@mjbartending Жыл бұрын
Hi Burak, you can't grind for both at the same time because the number of washers underneath the grind cone ia different. For espresso I'm grinding between #5 and #10, with two 0.2mm washers installed. Fro Aeropress I'm grinding at #14-13 with one 0,2mm washer installed. For V60 I'm grinding at #20 without any washers installed. For Chemex I'm at #25, also without any washers under the grind cone.

Note: when installing the second (circular) grind wheel, test its fixation by pulling it upward by the thin metal ring. If you can lift it out, you need to reinsert and realign until it is impossible to pull out. If you don't do this, the wheel will move up and down while grinding, resulting in an enormously coarse grind. Still good enough for cupping, but not for actual drinking (and possibly damaging your grinder in the long run)!

A guide for the extra washers*: If your shots are coming out too quickly with the factory washer installed, try adding the 0.2mm washer to the already installed factory one. . Still to quick? Replace the 0.2mm washer by the 0.25mm one. STILL too quick? Replace with the 0.3mm washer. Every step up increases the finesse / decreases coarseness. Shots coming out too slow? Remove the factory washer and see what you can get. Although that shouldn't be necesssary as from the factory, its most coarse setting is really really coarse. Instead, try dosing differently or even a different coffee/roast. F.i.: I got way better results and much more quickly with a fresh batch of Monsooned Malabar, than with Colombian Caturra. *Adding more than one washer at a time gave me a coarseness that was waaay to fine, but perhaps it could work for your coffee machine. However, the manual states to only add one at a time. Just try a finer setting, below 5, if you need to.

In my case there is no factory washer. Only these 3 extra.

Hey i opened the my grinder just like you did in your first video and after putting everything back in its place the machine won’t turn on. If i open it again and push the small black button and close the circle it turns on, but not in its normal stage... what did i do wrong, maybe you could help:)
@mjbartending4 жыл бұрын
Hi, what do you mean with "not in its normal stage"?
@mjbartending4 жыл бұрын
Even without response I deduct that a small part jumped out when you opened it fully, as happened with me. If corrrect, you should now have only a small spring and one tiny plastic knob, but miss a second plastic part that pushes down on the circuit breaker when closed. With that part missing, it won't work. To circumvent this, I permanently closed the circuit breaker as I explain in the video. If you give me your emailaddress or app, I can even send you pictures op how to do that. I hope that answers your question.

Guys! Beware before doing this, when you reapply the bottom burr, ALWAYS aline it with the little metal bump part and the little crevice underneath the burr! If you don't do that the grinder will NOT work and it will damage the machine.

I found this video very useful as I am having trouble getting a fine getting for espresso. My machine is same mechanism but a cm800. Can I ask, did the extra washers come with your machine? I don't remember getting extra ones. Do you think I could just try any washer in there?
@mjbartending3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Mine did come with extra washers but yours wouldn't. The 800 series "fine adjustment" should by done by twisting the second adjustment wheel on the inner grinding wheel unit itself, if I'm correct. They made it easier that way, compared to the 700series. However, since they are so similar, I guess that in theory you could put a 0.2, 0.25 or 0.3mm washer underneath the cone, as long as its outer diameter is not larger than the base of the cone. Have you tried changing the grinding unit's fine adjustment yet ?

Hi! I have one small question - are the both washers you added have 0.2 mm? My friend have this machine and he says that coffee is still too coarsely ground, so he want to buy and add new one. Thank you in advance for your help! :)
@mjbartending4 жыл бұрын
hey Daria, there is always one 0.2mm washer installed from the factory already. Irongear (see comments below) even had two washers in his/her machine, not sure which the other one was. For myself, I added one 0.2mm washer to the 0.2 washer that was installed from the factory. Your friend can try to add a 0.25 or 0.3mm washer before buying a new machine. The difference between 0.2, 0.25 and 0.3 may seem insignificant, but its not. For my espresso machine, adding more than 0.2 was too fine and my shots took too long/over-extracted. Careful, by adding two or more washers (up to 3or 4total) the coffee might get stuck when you grind at finer settings (

Hi, I have a problem with my machine. It simply grinds too fine. there's barely any difference in elevation of the upper grind wheel between the coarsest and the finest setting. The coffee that comes out on the coarsest setting looks ready for espresso making and when I turn it to the finest setting, the coffee will barely come out. I tried removing the cone to check if there's a factory-placed washer below it so I can remove it (as i found out by your video, there is) but I can't remove the nut on the top because the cone is turning with the motion of my wrench. What can I do?
@mjbartending4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, it may sound simple but have you tried turning in the other direction? For some reason they reversed the turning direction so "unscrew" is "tighten" for this cone head. Had me confused too, first time. If that doesn't help, try spraying some oil in the seam of the nut and the cone, then tap it gently but firmly with a rubber mallet. Pick up the machine and topple it a few times to really get the oil in between the nut and cone. Then twist and try to hold the cone in place as you twist the nut off. Let me know how it goes.
@IronGearProductions4 жыл бұрын
I was able to counter the movement with a plastic spoon which i pushed down next to one of the 3 "fins" of the platform the cone is standing on. I noticed there was not just one but TWO washers below the cone. Firstly I removed one, then both washers and tried it again. It seems like the coffee is coming out coarser now. But still way far from actual french press size. It does work, but I'm kidna disappointed. Do you have any other ideas?
@mjbartending4 жыл бұрын
@@IronGearProductions sorry for the late reply, my notifications were not working. If you are grinding without spacers already, you've reached its max. factory coarseness. You could try sanding the bottom of the grinder cone, but before that, I have one suggestion: try grinding with the circular grinding wheel NOT properly seated (the one with the ring handle and white markings). When you do not fully lock the grind wheel in the top, it will stay up a full millimeter or more, thus increasing the grind space and creating an incredibly coarse grind. The noise will be louder but it may just give you what you need.
@mjbartending4 жыл бұрын
@@IronGearProductions yet another option: underneath the ball bearings there are two large, thick washers. Removing one could greatly increase coarseness. try this first!
