Tow in the direct 1:1 gear, few more rpms but likely 15l per 100km. Stone stompers will NOT stop all stones, the issue is cars coming at you throw stones at your car and van, many of the stones hitting your van will bounce back into your back window. Go to bunnings, buy sheet of clear 1.2mm table cover vinyl, gorilla tape it on back window.

Hi Jake, you mentioned in your video that you ran 10 gauge wire to charge your van. If that is what you have done you will have all sorts of problems as the voltage drop is too high. You need to run a minimum of 6B&S (6AWG) to charge your batteries. Also I think driving at 110km with a van on the back is crazy and in most states illegal.

And not just the transmission, also the motor itself, which already is prone to heat issues due to reduced sump oil capacity (5 litres) and the crazy recommendation of 0 - 5w oils. So bearing issues incoming. There is an aftermarket sump that increases oil volume by 30% and many use 5w - 20w instead.

@wyattfamily8997Ай бұрын
As I understand it, this model is recommended to use 0 - 10w oil, and the sump volume has been reduced to around 5 litres. An aftermarket sump is available that increases oil volume by 30% (which assists in cooling too), and many run 5w - 30w also as it holds its lubrication properties better/longer. The recommended oil is far to light, and the reduced volume means it can't cool as much as it would with the more usual, larger volume. Expect bearing problems (failure) if under heavy load for prolonged periods like towing etc. without aftermarket changes.
@Spoonfed78Ай бұрын
If it's sold with tow rating and associated gcm and it's not engineered to do this, let it burn and get a new one under warranty. That's ridiculous you've got to do motivations likely voiding the warranty because of bad design

We tow with a V6 Ranger. I have similar concerns with the trans temp. Towing the same caravan as we did with our MR Triton, the trans temps (monitored with Scangauge) are generally about 15-20C higher in the Ranger. Once it gets to mid 90C you simply cannot get it back below 90C. The Triton had a factory front mounted heat exchange radiator for the trans and would typically sit at about 75-80C. Spikes in temp due to hills etc were quickly brought under control once back on a flat section of road. Ranger uses the engine coolant meaning the engine coolant temp becomes the lowest the trans temp can get. I'd put a cooler on the Ranger but that would impact the warranty. Really wish manufacturers at least made it an option for those who tow or work the trans hard. If you are worried about the trans temp, I'd suggest getting some form of OBD2 scan tool so you can see actual temp not rely on the generally vague nature of the factory gauge.
@Jimvl3pv15 күн бұрын
The 10R80 transmission in the Ranger is designed to run at operating temperatures of 96-101C. Quite high in comparison to others but that's how its designed. Would explain your readings as the thermostat would be controlling those temps. For a manufacturer to deny warranty they would have to prove it caused the fault, using a proven kit(wholesale auto) and a licensed mechanic it would be hard to argue against. Just make sure you get your transmission fluid checked and noted after fitting the cooler by Ford as overfilling at install is a common issue and could lead to warranty issues.

About the gearbox temperature. Are you in a gearbox mode where the torque converter is locked up? And are you in a gear where you're letting the engine rev more. 2 things heat up gearboxes, the torque converter slipping, and the gearbox doing more work in each revolution. If you need to slow down a bit and pick a gear where it's doing 3000+ rpm to reduce the load on the gearbox.
@spudboy1328Ай бұрын
I know you love the look of your new tyres, but: - you've increased your diameter by 6.5%, from 803mm to 859mm. The limits in Sth Aust are 50mm increase in diameter so you are over that, so not legal. - my tyre place will not fit tyres over 5% increase in diameter - No part of the tyre may protrude past the edge of the bodywork - so that's going to get you defected - in SA the max increase in tyre width is 15mm, and you've gone from 265 to 305, so that's 40mm - your braking will be worse - acceleration will be worse - MTs will be a lot noiser, althought the MAXXIS are quieter than most. ATs are probaby all you need. - fuel consumption will be crap - You're asking a lot for the little 2.8L to drive 33.8" tyres. It's too late now, but you probably should have gone for 285/70R17, which is 32.7" diameter. Anyway - we'll see how you get on, but in my opinion/experience you've gone too big for that vehicle.

Check your owners manual about towing speed and weight I am pretty sure you are towing well over the recommended speed for your van and the speed limit is 100km/hr. when towing the van. Your car is now a lot heavier I would guess kerb has jumped from 2495kg to very close to 2750kg and your van is around the 3350kg mark if not more and the larger tires have reduced the actual torque available due to the ratio change. From what you have shown I would have certainly paid out the extra and bought the LC300, kerb w is only 105kg more torque is 40% more, power is 50% more and from the fuel economy your are achieving it may well be more efficient, also the GCM is 6750kg. Looks like you will need a trans cooler, GVM/GCM upgrade probably an intercooler and quite possibly a tune and a bigger radiator this would hit the pocket for another 10 to 12 grand, ouch, and the LC300 would still be more capable in power. Good luck
@abecoulter998915 күн бұрын
Definitely would be over GVM weight once the 300kg ball weight gets added with all those accessories. 600kg payload to limit. 300kg ball weight, 150kg (approx) passengers. Wheels and tyres would add 50kg roughly. Plus all the other accessories would be close the the 100kg left over.

Those wheels look awesome ! I had similar tyres on my 2.8 Fortuner, the bigger mud terrain tyres absolutely killed the performance when towing and I had it tuned with 600nm. I had a torque converter lock up kit and a trans cooler, the lock up kit was much better at keeping the trans temps down (trans doesn't get hot when it's locked up) I had to tow in 4th gear (equal to your 6th gear) as it would not hold 5th gear (your 7th gear) with the bigger tyres . This meant using more fuel and doing dpf regen a lot more often. In NSW it's not legal to remove rear seats unless you get it registered as a lesser seat vehicle, if you are concerned about being legal I can send you the relevant clauses.

Hey mate you might want to check the owners manual with regards to towing. If the 250 is the same as my 200 series you’re not supposed to tow in drive to avoid over heating. Don't tow heavy loads in any overdrive gear. It will help reduce loads on engine and gearbox, definitely reduce exhaust gas temps and auto trans temps. In my 150 series, fuel usage towing in 1:1 ratio (S4) is the same or only negligably more than towing in higher gears. And do check your vehicle handbook in the towing section. Probably same as 150 series so there will be an instruction re which gear to tow in. Don't give Toyota a back door to avoid warranty liability in the event of an expensive engine or tranny failure and the vehicle data proves you have been doing otherwise. Thanks for the videos..

The stripes look great

Finally some mud terrains! You won't regret it. Your off road travels will be less stressful. The stripes look good, keep them but maybe change one of lighter colours to tie in the bolts on the bead locks, looks a bit off with too many colours going on. Its looking good 👍 oh and get a ARB double compressor with tank, will pump your tyres up in seconds

It's beautiful ..I'm not sure if it would look better to me if the rims didn't have the black beauty ring & gold hardware or not, decal looks great..wow.cool.

Maybe just go all polished? We might do! Thanks for watching!

@@lilandjake The first impression effect was" wow" when you pulled them out of the box, the rings toned them down maybe..they still look great either way..just a preference thing

Not a fan of silver wheels but with the side decals they look very neat so you have to keep the decals after the bush wraps

You don’t need airbags and massive tyres to go off road, if anything, they will just cause more dramas.

I have a Disco and it's difficult to change the transmission fluid. But I do have it changed. Your transmission fluid change schedule needs to be shortened. One hopes the transmission fluid can handle the heat, and that Toyota haven't put in a less heat capable transmission fluid due to their seeking better fuel economy statistics. My '97 Prado 3.4 petrol (no diesels then and my son now uses that Prado) also could get a hot transmission. Toyota's cost accounts were at work back then and they certainly are still around. But it's neat that you get a long wheelbase new tech chassis in a Prado. Also about chasing fuel economy running in a higher gear - the vehicle needs paddle shifts. So much easier and using a paddle shift locks the transmission for a period of time. But the downside of running a higher gear (ie 7th instead of 6th) is that doing so ca wear the gearbox more. Evidently (I am not an auto engineer though) using a high gear (7th instead of 6th) works the gearbox harder. Worth thinking about. At the end of the day fuel consumption is something we chase but longevity is much more important. It's also why the motor is not made more powerful. Good luck with your channel.

Our 2014 D4 ZF 8 speed has no heat issues towing heavy loads, needs no air bags and has a very strong chassis etc. Auto oil changed at 90k costing @600 buck - easy to do. It still out classes new Toyotas, so we're keeping it.
