Modlite HOG Update

I contacted Modlite and asked them to make a HOG light body that's the size of the old Streamlights and Maglites since I know our agency would love to rock that bezel-up in our sap pockets. They were happy to take the suggestion, but maybe stby would have more success in generating that product development since you guys have a platform.

At 12:00 while talking about the "back splash" it dawned on me that these guys really don't seem to have a whole lot of low-light training. Being blinding by this light or any light of this caliber is a non-issue if you are using it in the correct manner. Obviously, you wouldn't want to search a vehicle while holding this light pointing right at the point of interest, not sure why you would use such a light in this manner? - If this is the only light you have access to at the time, just point it at the roof of the vehicle and let the "splash" light up the entirety of the vehicle. Wherever you look, you'll see. Nice and easy. Same rule applies when you enter a room, point it up at the ceiling and use that umbrella of light to be able to see literally wherever you look. To my next point, you guys really seem to be either incapable of OR just plain don't care to, seek out a carry method that works for you. I understand you might not have vests/LBE at work, but guys come on... There are a multitude of options in terms of pouches/holsters that would fit this light on the belt. You guys state you don't have room on your belt, but yet speak about carrying the smaller light in a mag pouch on your belt. --- How about we replace that smaller pouch with a marginally larger one, the light would fit fine. Next point, I find it very interesting that out of you all, none have bought the adapter to allow the larger body to accept the smaller heads. This for me was a game-changer, and honestly creates a much smaller footprint in this configuration as the head size is drastically reduced. Thus you can use the thrym clip to clip the light inside of a pocket. It doesn't feel too big in the pocket, where-as the head of the HOG normally would. The body of the 21700 is only marginally bigger than the 18650 so that's a non-issue. A lot of the time I like to carry it in this way, clipped into pocket, lens down this way it's protected from the elements, and it clean and able to give me 100% of the light it's capable of, as opposed to carrying a light lens up so it can collect dust/grit/grime/snow/sand and whatever else will take away from the lights performance. You guys might want to spend the $30 on an adapter, throw a smaller head on the HOG body, then give us your opinions. I'd give you guys the benefit of the doubt about not wanting to carry the hog because of its size, but really I've found it all comes from the size of the head, the Hog body with a smaller head on it is perfection. Lastly, I'll leave you guys with this. --- Standard 18650 Modlite handhelds are NOT able to SUSTAIN the stated output for very long. At turn-on you will have roughly 4-6 minutes before your output is at about 50% reduction. Meaning if your 18650 handheld is on for 4-6 minutes straight, you're really looking at 685 lumens and WAY less candela then at turn on. (speaking about the PLH-v2) This fact is overlooked by many. The reason for the step-down is because an 18650 cannot handle that type of output for any extended period of time. With that said, running a smaller head on a 21700 "fixes" that issue, to a point at least. Not indefinitely, though you will have a significantly longer time at that higher output before the light starts stepping down. --- Not only this, but you go from having a mere 75 minute runtime on an 18650 - to a 5-6 hour runtime on a single charge of a 21700. Really, try the HOG body with the smaller head it's a game changer. You gain ALOT with only the "con" of a SLIGHTLY larger diameter body, and ever so slightly longer body.(barely) This configuration should solve just about everything you guys complained about.

Thanks for the response. Honestly we really do appreciate the feedback. We are always learning and striving to learn more that's for all of us. We did test the kydex holster for the light and did not like it on our belt. We tested it with multiple deputies at different stations. They all came to the same conclusion. The light holster just was not it for them or us. I see your point on the larger body and smaller head, but I bought this light to see through dark tint from distance, so putting a smaller head on it would not do it for me at least. I think of it like this, in my safe I don't have one gun that will do it all. So the HOG does what I want it to do shoot long distance. If I want to shoot short distance in a confined space I'll transition to pistol in this case a small admin light with less out put. As far as low light training cris and jay have worked graveyard shift for a combined 9 years. They got plenty of real world experience and both have taken multiple low light courses. I edc the HOG in my front pocket. Only complaint that I have is the light is a bit too heavy for the thyrm switchback ring

@@standby_official I honestly thought it would be brighter. Is it because it throws the light downrange further that it doesn't have a wide open area? My TLR1 HL brightens a HUGE portion of the area at night. This one doesn't even cover 1/4 of my basement.

Any thoughts on this light for K9 tracking applications? I was considering this with the OKW head to replacement my old Streamlight Stinger on my belt, I also carry an MCH Duty.

Totally agree on the pocket ND with my Modlite. I’ve actually burned my pocket liner and my battery is dead. The tail caps are recessed how tf is that happening?

Henry Holsters Helios light carrier for bezel down (available to fit duty or MOLLE belts) or a Bianchi baton holder to carry bezel up. Problem solved, problem staying solved.

@@standby_official Presumably, you're carrying a light on your belt already, no? If so, the HOG doesn't take up much more space that a traditional 6P style 1" light. Also, at this point, in addition to the Helios carrier, both 951 Tactical and Zero9 are making kydex holsters for the HOG, so there are plenty of options. I'm using the Helios now because I want it bezel-down, but for several months I used a Bianchi baton pouch to carry it bezel-up and that worked very well while occupying minimal belt real estate. And speaking of belt space, I'm curious as to what you guys are carrying that occupies all that space. I work security, not LE, but I'm carrying a similar loadout: pistol, 2x spare mags, cuffs, OC, baton, TQ, glove pouch, radio, and flashlight. All this fits on a duty belt (no external carrier here, either), I'm only working with a 34" waist, and I'm still able to keep the back of my belt slick for comfort while seated.

I keep hearing there's no way to carry it and that's just not true. Zero9 and 951 tactical make kydex pouches for it that are slim line. I run mine on a duty belt no issue

If you got belt room sure there is a way. I’m maxed out on belt space we aren’t able to wear outter vests.
