You know, you make me want to start gardening. I wonder if a person like me, a person that has killed every plant i have owned could do this? But my thought while watching this was to scale it up by 50% and design a "christmas tree stand" base and put it on a bucket the same as the hooch bucket. All of that to grow strawberries! And then for this or the hooch bucket tower it would be a simple matter to make a wire netting cylinder to keep the birds off. Hooch, if i ever move back into a house, i would be all over this, living on a boat, its impossible to do this. 😞

Great work! I think you can save a lot of print time by combining 3D parts with regular pipes. This would help ppl with smaller printers, or get rid of print space limitations in general. Just connect the UFOS to pipes with your bayonet connectors.

From an engineering perspective the narrowing funnel portion of the tower serves little purpose and could be creating some of your leaking due to water constantly being adhered to the wall after each funnel. Regardless of whether you eliminate the funnel-ing effect the internal basket is also probably in the wrong location, it could be better utilized above the plant (in other words at the bottom of each pipe section to redistribute the sprinkles rather than right at or “below” the plants. Personally I would eliminate moss and coco and only use scoria, hydroton, etc, because of neutrality, oxygenation, less system contamination. Etc. Love the content. Good luck.

Printed a different version of a hydro tower 2 years ago, still pleased, its still in the kitchen and grows herbs and salad. Perfect. But I chose white Pet-G, looks nice but is a mistake. Light gets in and algae grows. You need light tight filament, otherwise more cleaning, more often changing the water. H2O2 helps but does not remove all algae. Greetings from 53°N
@justinwhite2174

I had the same experience with mine, nutrients start to crystalize on the outside of the tower and algae starts to grow. Easy enough to clean up, just doesn't look attractive when using white filament at least.

Great content, as usual! Maybe foam filter could solve the media issue. Some of them are really low density. Like pre-filters for submersible pumps. The roots can grow into them, they dont change ph, can't be flushed down.

How about printable caps that can seal unused spaces? These could be used at startup to control leaks until the media builds moisture. Also control light leaks for algae as plants are removed.

I'd be curious to see what the nutrient concentration is once it makes it to the bottom two plant modules. Each module could be working kind of as a filter, reducing nutrient concentration. Might not be 100% a lighting issue.

Thx for the great Video. Idea: With the initial design, just do the holed bottom in each outlet and go without any substrate. You could put the cotton wool in each outlet and let the roots just grow in to the pipe. Or is there any reason why that would not work?

How does the dehydrator help with filament?
@robbrodar173
@robbrodar173 2 ай бұрын
The spools of filaments absorb moisture from the air. When a spool is hydrated, it pops and hisses as it is heated up at the 3d printer's nozzle, cause the moisture is vaporized. This causes ugly prints.

I was actually thinking about that as well, but I don't know if water is going to be enough to see the effect. PLA, one of the more common 3D print materials, is stable in water but it can break down into lactic acid from the action of microorganisms and their enzymes. EDIT: I see Hoocho commented that he's using PETG. Still, it would be interesting to see if the filament or any of its additives plays any role here.
