I just want to say you have improved so much over the past year or so at making videos. It's been awesome following your journey. And of course: Very nice little add on - that wood grain

Yea, over the past several months I've been trying to really refine the video making process, and I think over the last several episodes I've really got it locked in. I want my videos to be as artful and interesting as possible while building tiny things out of styrofoam :)

using the solvent in sharpie ink as a way to score the grout lines into the battlement facade is a stroke of genius

I'd suggest two things to strengthen them. The first is to take a toothpick on each of the underside joins. It just reinforces the connection and if you do it right, they shouldn't add any height to the end result. If you want cross ones as well, it is doable, but would probably leave a visible gap at the ends. The second thing would be to take the flat ended tacks and regularly space them along the exterior. They would look rather interesting visually and strengthen the entire piece. As an additional bonus, if you find ones with the right metal, you can also use them as mounting points for some magnetic addons such as banners, ladders, or even some siege equipment.

These rock!!! For the template, I'm going to add two or three simple thumbtacks in each cardboard piece, just to make sure they don't shift around while cutting the foam core. Otherwise, this is perfect!!!

In my mind, details like that are for set piece builds. The whole spirit of stackers is that they are super "lo-fi" terrain. Simple and utilitarian, and I think this design perfectly captures that spirit.

Love the stackers! I made some battlements DM Scotty style a while ago and they coincidentally happened to be exactly the right size for stackers. I have since made a handful of other items to go on top of them. Didn't think of the clip-on aspect though! Definitely doing that

Have you thought about using the cardboard template as a guide for your proxon? If there are no jagged places to catch the wire would it be possible to run the template gently along the wire and cut the parts faster?
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Not only did I think about it, I tried it. That was my first idea. The problem is that cutting the cardstock creates small indents in corners where the wire gets caught. This results in very messed up jagged cuts. In the end I just found it easier to use the knife. I think it would work if you took some time to make a perfect template. A laser cut one from wood or plastic would work well, but it would be difficult to make by hand.

Hm, I'm sitting here wondering how to add a bit of realism to these. The merlons would have to be taller, which is easy (they're there to provide cover from arrows, after all-they weren't decorative!). The problem is having the machicolations should jut out from the walls a ways and have holes in them that'd really weaken the pieces. The idea was that anyone who got past arrows to get to the wall itself would find death rain upon them from above through a hole in the nearest machicolation. Castle defenses were srs bizness! I'm just not sure how to do them right in foam. ;( Building them atop stackers is quite realistic-castle walls were not thin.

@malcolmrowe9003
@malcolmrowe9003 3 жыл бұрын
This may be too late for you (will hopefully help others) but most printer drivers give an option to scale your printout, normally as a percentage. It may take a bit of trial and error to get the size exactly right if 100% or 'actual size' does not get it right for you. It may be that your paper size is different and your printer was doing a scale-to-fit.

When you say your clear coat has the added benefit of "not yellowing over time", what are you alluding to that does yellow over time? After seeing your first stackers video, I made some circular ones. I just cut a 6" diameter circle and cut it in quarters (so 1/4 circle with a 3" edge). Then cut off 1/3 of it and glued it on top. photos.app.goo.gl/HV2mU4y7dK2eYi7y7

Those circular risers are pretty awesome. I might have to make some. The Minwax that I usually use on terrain (and mention being out of here) can slightly yellow over time. It's from my experience pretty minimal and not something you notice on brown and gray terrain.

The foam is covered in paint, that's why it didn't melt.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Not quite...Aerosol sprays with strong solvents can easily melt foam with a layer of acrylic paint on it. Many people find this out the hard way. Don’t assume paint will protect foam from rattle can melting. The mod podge helps far more than paint but still isn’t a sure bet. It all comes down to the solvents and propellants in the spray can and the distance you spray from.
@GalaxyStranger01

That was my point - it didn't melt because it was covered by other material. You said it "appears to be safe on foam" - well, you didn't test it on foam.
