1:36 made me scared. You should be happy your sawstop emergency stoped. Please never ever use a paralel guide while crosscutting, the board between the paralel guide and the blade isn't secure and if it jams it is going to fly. Nice build for the rest!! Good use of all techniques.

Please help us noobs understand so we don't die. So when crosscutting against the grain of wood, you should do it by hand? Or?
@modustrial
@modustrial 4 жыл бұрын
The thing I did wrong was using the fence in conjunction with a cross-cut sled...as I've now learned, this is a big no-no. Using the sled is fine, as long as the piece you are cross-cutting isn't riding the fence as you cut it.
@Heinz76Harald
@Heinz76Harald 4 жыл бұрын
you can use the paralel guide ofc, but it HAVE TO end right before you enter the saw, so you cant get stucked. and ofc... dont push on both sides, since it will get stucked again... i just wonder how it comes somebody got a nice table saw in his shop and has no clue how to use it /facepalm
@doubledarefan

1:37 Thought the piece was going to get twisted between the blade and the fence, and get thrown with enough force to punch a hole in the wall.

and it didn't ;) that said, safety dictates it isn't worth the risk... will move the fence in the future when using the crosscut sled.

@modustrial

Thanks much! I actually have 3D printed LED modules that I was intending to embed in the concrete to shine up through the epoxy. however, the build was already getting really complex and I decided to play it a little bit safe and leave the LEDs out this time. It's a pretty safe bet that you'll see some led up lighting through epoxy in some sort of future project that is derivative from this 😀

FYI you can totally cut foam like that with a box cutter, make sure the blades are sharp, don't be afraid to replace them every few minutes, and you'll have no foam dust to contend with and no cnc costs to worry about. The only thing to watch out for here is just keeping your hand 90 degrees to the surface as you cut it for a nice stepped look like the cnc provides, or expect a little more wiggle in that stepped look. Finally to translate a sketchup design onto foam like that by hand, I've found taking screen shots of the form, and then using a projector works really well. if you set the cad of the form into a theoretical rectangle that matches the real life size of the form (say 4' by 4') you can match up the projected screen shot up easily to the actual form to be traced. If you use a little care Ive found this gets accuracy to about 1/8 of an inch, if you're really meticulous you can get it even tighter.

I always get little tears when I try to use a box cutter. A $12 electric turkey knife also works pretty well....

Love this build, but my first thought is... when the table is turned upside down to insert the foam it would be cool to add a couple small tube inserts at the highest/deepest part of the epoxy sections which would, after applying the concrete, leave small open cavities to insert a couple small LED lights which, when inverted would light the epoxy from the depths.
@modustrial
@modustrial 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I actually made some 3D printed LED modules to do exactly what you suggest, but the build was already so complicated I decided not to push it this time. Of course that just means I'll have to do a sequel to this 😉

If you use acetone, you can just dissolve the styrofoam.

What's the point drilling both the wood raisers and 1" h.s.s. tubing, if you're just gonna drive a Tek-screw through it? Kinda defeats the purpose.

Looking amazing. For fast concrete removal ( bottom of the table ) you can use grinder diamond disk , then polish.

I don't have the skill. I don't have the imagination. I don't have the knowledgebase. I don't have the tools. Why am I addicted to watching this guy's videos?

I bet if you face the base with mirrors it would REALLY make it look like it’s floating! Just a thought. Very cool project. 👍🏻

Dude... to fill in gaps in foam or to reshape it, just use drywall putty (or spackle). It's the best thing. Doesn't damage the foam and you can make it the consistency you want to by just adding a bit of water. It's what miniature terrain makers like me do :)

For sure! In subsequent projects, I've learned from this mistake and done exactly that (check the concrete beam bench and white concrete sink vids, for example)
