Hi Bolo, I got both the MPC Key 61 and the Yamaha montage (and since I'm a sucker for punishment, also the wavestate). This is how you do it, The Modx/Montage series works a bit different when it comes to midi, it's actually quite easy once explained. You know those parts you see on performace (the 8 slots?) - each of them has a midi assignement, so if you add an instrument to slot 1 that will be midi channel 1, add one to the next slot it becomes midi channel 2. Now this may complicate things for you if you did not design your synth-voice in the 8-part design phase (you know, sound editor), but you created them in the PART editor instead, you need to know the difference! Try this: Get the "INIT" sound, which uses only 1 midi channel, and add only SOLO marked instruments to slot 2-8 etc... then you can record these separately with your MPC as part 1 is midi 1 part 2 is midi 2 etc.. you get it. Also - make sure you go to UTILITY USB and set the mode to MULTI (means multi-timbral), if you set it to SINGLE - it will only play a single combined parts performance as Midi 1 (for all parts). Hope this was easy to grasp. Holler if it wasnt.

Yes I fully understand💪🏾 Thats exactly the way I work on it. I initialize first then select GM midi. From there I got to work. However, I want to turn OFF keyboard Control and Thurman OFF assignments. I got a few videos where I made beats on it. It not horrible but definitely not the easiest. I haven’t gotten rid of it yet but I’m hoping to find a better way to get this to work correctly💪🏾

@@BoloDaProducer When you say you wanna turn off the keyboard, do you mean turn off Modx's entire local control keyboard? Because you can do that in Utility. Also The Montage (there's a reason it cost extra) has direct access button for selecting the parts AND muting each individual part.

It's unnecessarily complicated. Forgoing a traditional sequencer made it goofy. I've been working with and setting up people's studios forever, and the Montage is the first one to throw a crazy curve ball lol. Older Roland gear, Brother sequencers. But as Bolo said, it's definitely a live-leaning board for sure, but they could have made dropped half the steps to make it work out the box like almost every other keyboard🤷🏾‍♂️

I have a Montage and two things make it invaluable - the arpeggiator and the vast array of sounds that I dont really hear anywhere else. I just use it as minimally as possible for the sound and the arps which are like a secret weapon.

Really interesting to hear you having the same problems as me. I bought a MODX 6 first about 2 years ago. Then I got an MPC One. Love them both. But trying to get them to talk to each other is a nightmare.

My first keyboard was an old Yamaha my dad bought around '97 from Radioshack. Then around 7-8 years ago I got the Roland FA07. I used it mostly for the sounds recorded into a DAW. I only just recently FINALLY decided to learn the sequencer & sampler & they're not bad! My MPC Live 2 is still my go to for sequencing & sampling but I was surprised to find the FA07 can hold its own with a bit of menu diving! I sort of have the Fantom 0 series too as an expansion. I own the MC-707 which has the Zencore engine (same as in the Fantom 0 keyboards). The FA + 707 combined gives me a good amount of pianos, synths, percussion, flutes, guitars, etc.

Happy belated bro! Fellow Aquarian (18th)!!! Trust and believe, I have the Montage 6 and though they’ve upgraded the sequencer (at first, it didn’t come with a sequencer!) but it’s a bear to use! I love the sequencer in the Motif XF. That is a “workstation” keyboard though, meaning you can do everything in that board. The Montage/MODX are synths with sequencers added! I think that’s the reason why these particular sequencers aren’t as intuitive as say the former Motif’s or the MO’s for that matter. They sound awesome; gives me a different pallet of sounds than my Kronos (which is the BEST workstation!!)

I did the same thing 😄 I completely fell in love with it, when I first saw it in person. And, although I knew it was a lot ($$$), I wanted it. I got the MODX7 and was ecstatic! But, I couldn't figure out how to make tracks with it. So, I sold it. But...I was so in love with the look of it and remembering how it was love at first sight. So...I bought another one. And, yes, I still sold it pretty quickly. I, next, fell in love with the MPC Key 61. Got one and ending up selling it 😞 My final decision is that I'm gonna get the MODX7+ AND the Key 61 (both) AGAIN!! And, I'm sticking with it, both of them. I'll use the Key 61 for songwriting and the MODX7 for just playing and learning. As much as I spend every month going to Happy Hour, I'd rather use that money on these 2 boards and have something to do at home.

Appreciate this video,. I've had several motifs, fantoms, korgs, and even casios lol but I've been using midi controllers and a macbook for gigs the last few years because I don't gig as much anymore, I'm like 90/95% studio work these days but I do want to get an actual keyboard for my weekly church gig. Yeah the MODX/Montage is primarily for live use as are the last few Motifs for that matter. Many of the best sounds on these boards are multipart performances which doesn’t work well when you want to use it as a multitimbral tone generator. Best use for a MODX in the studio is recording everything as audio in a DAW. Things to keep in mind though, blue sounds are multipart and green sounds are single part. Also, parts 9-16 don’t aren’t controllable from the keyboard and are designed to be triggered from external midi unlike parts 1-8 which are intended for layers and splits. Maybe that helps.

Happy Born day at u, Blessings at u, Finally somebody talking about it, I had 4 of the MOD X6's sent 2 back, but your correct these boards took a lot from the YAMAHA EX-5 AND EX 5r boards, ( ADSR Technology, I have 3 of each still in my other studio, that I still use and the sequencer and midi controller are a PAINNNNNNN to wrap your head around and they had a MIDI B on both, and came up on things thats not even in the manual back then, but the MOD x6 has pretty much the same headaches in sequencing as the yamaha EX-5. good vid, Bless at u

You are fully right. Each sentence I agree with. That is just a software issue, nothing too complicated. A good start would be to let us freely assign MIDI channels to the parts by a simple OS update. I don‘t need rubber wheels or weird smart morph filter. But, Yamaha is not best known for listening to the ordinary user.

This is the same way I feel about the Fantom 06 with a couple things, like saving sounds to a scene/pattern. Instead of just pressing write, and it saving the whole pattern, the effects you've applied to the sounds in the scene/pattern, etc, you have to save the tone/sound to a user bank. So what happens when those user banks fill up in the very near future? It's going to overwrite the tone/sound effects and other parameters from a scene/pattern from before over a certain amount of time. It just makes no sense to me at all why Roland would do this? Another thing is the pitch wheel cannot do fast pitch bends. It can't keep up with how I am affecting the bend. It can handle up to about medium speed, but anything past that, it just can't handle. I don't know if they fixed any of these things in a new update or what, but it's very frustrating when the "workstation" that you have, doesn't do the bare basics of what you expect it to do. It's just mind boggling that Roland wouldn't make sure of these tiny details before releasing something this expensive. I am really torn on whether keeping it or not because of these little and basic details. Erasing drum sounds is a pain too. You have to hold down the key/sound that you don't want through the whole entire pattern to erase it. Why not just have an erase button for when you want to erase a note or key? They did not think of people who would be using this as a "workstation". I need the drums too most of the time. If I worked for one of these companies, I would never do or let some of these things go unnoticed for the life of me. I can't understand it. I think I am done with Roland products. The JD-Xi is one of the most fun and easy synthesizer/drum machine "workstations" that they made, and that is only a $500 dollar synth, but it doesn't come with these stupid and intuitive ways of making music. They made it simple and straight forward to make patterns, apply effects, write/save it, and move on to the next. Just why Roland?...SBN RESONATE

Go to Settings>Effect Switch and turn 'KBRD CTRL LOCK' to ON. This will lock keyboard control on for part 1 of the performance but will turn it off for all other parts even when you add new parts.

I had the opportunity to buy a Yamaha Montage used a year ago, I almost got it but decided not to because I dont want a work station keyboard with limited DAW like software to make music.

As for the keyboard control, maybe going to settings, then midi I/O and then setting local control off? or using the quick setup for "rec midi in daw"? (those options will still send midi from the keyboard to the midi outs, and maybe from there back to the modx if the MPC or daw is setup like that) I use the MODX with a MPC one, similar workflow as you showed in a video before. The first thing I do is to setup a performance matching my MPC project, and save it as a new one. Put the MODX in multimode most of the time, and set one track on the MPC for each part on the MODX (midi channel 1 to part 1 midi channel 2 to part 2 etc), and save the performance. I do not use the MPC to change sounds on the MODX I just save a performance matching the name of my MPC project and set it up on the MODX. Then when I load a project on the MPC I load the matching performance on the MODX and are ready to go. I don't even have a mixer so I got to setup an audio track to monitor the MODX to hear it through the MPC. As the MPC one has no keys, I use the keyboard control a lot to record midi, the MODX is my midi controller as well. But all midi is recorded on the MPC, so I do not need to record audio tracks, till all parts are ready to record. I also overdub midi on top of already recorded midi tracks to add pitch bends modulations, or any sort of things that can be used on the MODX. That being said, while using one part per midi channel, all quite easy, only when I want to use multipart instruments, then I might just switch to single mode and use one midi channel for the whole thing record that and move on. I also tried using the MODX as audio interface for the MPC, so you can use multiple outputs sent to multiple audio tracks on the MPC simultaneously, but got problems with audio, maybe the latest update fixes that, have not yet tried out with the updates.

I guess it depends on workflow. Whenever I use any hardware with BM3 or the MPC or Force, or even with FL, I immediately bounce the track to audio once I get the midi down. That way I can just move to the next thing without worrying about program changes and all of that bs.

I been watching your videos, I have old gear and am now getting some new gear. I have the MPC2000XL totally maxed out. I have the Korg Triton extreme!! Which i would never get rid of them!! Just picked up the MPC Live 2 and would like to get a new keyboard!! I was thinking the korg Nautilus or the akai 61 key!! Any thoughts? I like making R&B beats on the workstations!! I use the mpc for mainly sampling.. not a roland fan, i have had fantoms and couldn’t master the board like the korgs. I had the motif back in the day and the RS7000 they were cool but the sounds where too acoustic for my style..

For the main issue youre* talking about, hit the utility button, then hit advanced on then screen, then you hit the little MIDI I/O button. Multi allows part per sequencer track and single makes it so all parts are summed to a particular track. I was having the exact same issue and my old lady's good google searching ass found it and broke it down for me. I really wish u still had yours so I could go thru my journey with you. To be clear, they have three options: Multi(part/ track), Single(all parts summed to one track), Hybrid(I assume this allows you to mix and match to where you could have multiple parts on one or more tracks and single parts out to the rest. Hope you get a modx+ or a montage in the future. This thing is that shyt. Some quality sounds and options on this thing.

I totally get your frustration. I have a Montage, which is just like the MODX, and using it to make beats with Logix is not easy as my Korg, E-MU, and Roland Synths. They have a standard mode where you have 16 MIDI channels to work with. Even my old MOTIF ES rackmount was easier to use.

Honestly I find my modx very very simple to use compared to many other synths. It's honestly designed for simple use. There are far more complex synths out there. Even in the stand alone market. And that's not even getting into modular synthesis. Try some Elktron stuff that will have ur head racking for a few hours or or korgs wavestate. Love that synth but it's super super deep. Makes the modx seem like a toy as far as how deep it can go. Honestly the modx type of synth is perfect for those who don't want a ton of complexity and quick to find sounds.

I prefer rack mount sound modules as I replaced My entire keyboard rig with all rackounts version's of them. Rack mounts were ment to be used with your DAW. I just gotten rid of my MPC5000 that was a piece of junk. I own an E-MU MO Phatt, E-MU Proteus 2000, Yamaha Rack MOTIF- ES, Roland Fantom-XR, Roland Integra-7. I also have the Korg Triton and Triton Extreme software. That's virtually every peice of hardware used on 90s and early 2000s Hip Hop ad R&B records as my legacy hardware synth collection. The Integra-7 is really a modern Roland XV-5080 that has all the JV-1080, JV-2080 sounds, plus all 12 SRX expansion boards and super natural sounds. Software sequencing and latency has gotten better over the years that don't need an MPC anymore. Hybrid is the way to go as I use soft synths too esp keyscape and Omnisphere with my hardware. The newer MPCS aren't built like they use to that's cheaply made that won't last. I'm officially done with Akai. It's not the same company anymore after it was sold to Numark.

Is there a "Local Control" setting in the global, systems, or utility setup pages (or whichever term Yamaha uses to describe the global settings menu) under MIDI? If so, set it to "off." All midi keyboards should have that parameter. Also, find out which MSB or LSB setting changes performances and which one changes the sound bank. All of this information should be found in the manual or other included documentation, specifically the midi implementation specifications. The midi implementation documentation usually specifies which MSB and LSB values correspond to which specific sound banks as well as which ones correspond to the performance changes. I think what you are trying to do is just stay on one performance (multitimbral setup) and call patches for the 16 different midi parts within that one performance. However, you're probably using the wrong MSB or LSB value and unintentionally changing the actual performance instead of the sounds within it, which is what you DON'T want. So yeah, I believe it's just a matter of referring to the documentation to find the correct LSB and MSB values to change the sound banks instead of the performance. Also, find out what midi channel performance changes are received on or if there is a way to turn off "receive performance changes via midi" (or whatever it may be called) in the global midi settings. Sometimes in midi global settings, midi receive is often referred to as "Rx" and midi transmit is referred to as "Tx." BTW, I used to have a Motif Rack as well (the first one that came out on 2003). With that one, I had to create a performance and set it up for multitimbral midi use by assigning each of thev16 parts to one specific midi channel, etc...

@Bolo Da Producer Wow. I see. Yeah, it's surprising, yet sad this keyboard wasn't designed with external midi sequencing in mind. Really? That's sucks. I've never heard of a powerful modern workstation keyboard that couldn't be set up for external multitimbral midi sequencing, especially from Yamaha of all manufacturers. I'm sorry to hear the MODX isn't working out for you. It really does sound good though. I hope you will eventually be able to figure ot out. However, if you don't and end up sending it back, I perfectly understand. When a keyboard is considered "professional" and costs this much money, it should be "easy to use" and all essential functions and parameters regarding midi should be present and easily accessible, and such a keyboard should be able to be sequenced externally without any issues.

Sorry to hear that, but I have made several post on this channel about the scammers. I even made a dedicated video on my channel, but video received a very low number of views because people are not concerned about that until they get scammed. I have a verified check next to my KZbin page to show that it is me. Any other page that is pretending to be me does not have a verification check.

Do not ever respond to emails that look like a brand or person, without checking the email and or the youtube channel with the official ones usually listed on there own website of the brand or person.
