A few days ago my faucet handle started sticking. I had to pull really hard on the handle to turn the water on. The handle was also loose and shook a bit, even though the allen key part was fully tightened. Replacing the cartridge fixed both problems for me, so thank you so much for this video. Some tips: 1) Home Depot gave me a replacement 1225b cartridge for free when I gave them my old one. 2) When I tried to shut off the valves under the sink, the hot water valve was really hard to turn. I ended up using a small wrench to turn the valve. 3) There is a gray round part that screws in and out. It was hard to turn by hand, so I used the 4 little grooves/slots on the side by sliding my needle nose pliers in the grove, then turning the pliers. 4) I removed the old cartridge using a cartridge puller tool that I already had from a previous cartridge replacement job. But I still had to pull very hard to get the cartridge out. Make sure nobody is standing behind you, or you might knock their teeth out when the cartridge comes out! 5) The hardest part of the repair was getting the retention clip back in after inserting the new cartridge. You have to make sure the new cartridge is fully in. The clear plastic part of the cartridge should line up flat with the brass part. I had to put the white square cap on, spread my wrench across it, and push super hard down multiple times to get the cartridge all the way in. I felt like I was gonna break the vanity! 6) I found out from another video that the hole on the cartridge stem should be in 6 oclock position. When I did that, the hot/cold water turned out to be the right way.

Thanks for the excellent information. As a side note, the grey threaded section on our faucet was not removable. It could twist slightly left and right but didn’t twist far enough to remove it. We were able to pull the retaining clamp from the back as well as push it towards the back from the front of the grey part. Once the retaining clamp was removed we were able to pull the cartridge out with our pliers. Then continued to replace the parts according to his video. Hopefully this helps.

Hi, did you try to turn it with a pair of pliers? Counterclockwise
@christinehulton51802 жыл бұрын
@@FIXITHomeImprovementChannel Yes, with all our strength. Also added CLR to try and see if that was the issue. I feel that we have a different moen model than the one you demonstrated as there was no separate white plastic piece, it was one solid grey piece only.

Same here. To get the old cartridge out, I had to push the clip from the two points at the front of the faucet, and it eventually got pushed back enough to expose the hole on the clip; at that point I could grasp it with pliers and pull it out. Then to remove the cartridge I sprayed Blaster to do some penetrating, then grabbed the cartridge brass tip with vise grips, and used a painter’s tool to lever the tips of the vise grips until the cartridge came out enough to pull it by hand. No fun exploring the how to, so passing this along to help the next poor soul who has a similar faucet.

Very cool video. I especially like your suggestion to line up the parts in the order you take them out to make it easier to put things back. That is something I figured out when I was 11 years old repairing a wind-up alarm clock that my mother threw in the kitchen trash can. After I fixed it, I claimed it as mine, and put it in my bedroom. 😂
@stevebrazzell79152 жыл бұрын
Excellent video, including how you zoom in and explain each detail. One important point I missed was skipped was testing the hot/cold before finalizing everything. Mine turned out being reversed so I had to pull and reinstall. Still, I just finished replacing my old Moen 12801 with the 1225. I had a heck of a time getting the old cartridge out--pulling with all my might using channel-lock pliers on the stem wouldn't cut it. Instead of spending another $20 on a puller, however, I opened up my small channel lock pliers and put screwed the top screw through the "channel" where you slide the two jaws closer or further apart. This gave me a very effective "poor man's puller" and I was able to get it right out pulling on the two handles of the pliers. Hope that helps someone.
@halphpint74002 жыл бұрын
LOL I did the same thing...WATCH UNTIL THE END PEOPLE....lesson learned 😂😂. Also consider spending the extra 12 dollars on a puller...I got mine out without one but it took multiple pulls using every upper body muscle I had.

Thanks for this excellent video. These tasks usually take forever because something inevitably goes wrong, but this video made everything perfectly straightforward. One little tip: The clip did not go back in easily. Look for a little line on the top of one side. When this was facing up it went in easily. Thanks again!
@lancelemay697124 күн бұрын
Excellent video, helped me a lot. Thank You! I spent most of my time soaking parts in lime-away and scraping scale off the faucet. Of course I had to spin the cartridge 180 degrees to properly orient hot / cold. 🤪 If I have a 50/50 shot at getting it right I’ll get it wrong every time. There’s a slight notch on one of the flat sides of the cartridge stem. If that notch is toward the back of the faucet closest to the mirror in the bathroom it will be oriented correctly. The faucet is 25 years old. The scale actually caused pitting on the faucet body so bad that in the future the cartridge solution won’t work. The entire faucet will need to be changed but I’m old enough that the faucet will outlive me and be someone else’s problem at that point.

This video saved me a lot of money instead of calling a plumber and replacing a new faucet. I looked up other videos and able to do everything but I missed the last part. Before putting the handle back in place, the rare end of the metal part has to be put underneath... (at 5:38) Otherwise, it still leaks... Perfectly fixed after all my frustration... Thanks!

A most excellent video. Many thanks for making it. A couple small things to change/add: 1.) In some cases the drain stopper might not want to stay down and it might slowly creep up. Because of this, it is suggested to cover the drain stopper with an actual towel, not a paper towel. Why? Because paper towel is too lightweight and it is too easily moved by the drain stopper coming up or by an accidental touching. 2.) The new cartridge is likely pre-greased. If the new cartridge is sticky/greasy in the areas around the o-rings, then there is no reason to apply, and it is suggested that you do not apply, any additional grease to the cartridge. 3.) After pushing the new cartridge into place by hand, use the white plastic tool to completely push the cartridge into place. This is probably the most important thing to add to the video. Again, many thanks for making the most excellent video.

I got stuck for a while thinking the removal tool was meant to actually helped me grip with the plyers to 'pull' the cartridge but I wound up realizing as you showed that you use the tool to 'twist' and later adjust the cartridge, which makes pulling easier and releases the bonds between the rubber and the brass.

Pro tip: if the white plastic screw mount (as seen in 5:35 of this video in his right index finger) won't go back on top of the rest of the faucet assembly, it's because you need to turn the Moen 1225b cartridge right (or left) 90 degrees - use pliers to move it. This is because both the white plastic screw mount and the Moen 1225b cartridge have two straight edges and two round edges and must align. I was going nuts trying to figure out why it wouldn't sit in properly. I've changed out the cartridge a few times every time I get stuck on this part.

Exactly what I needed. My faucet is that model and brand new. I'm trying to find out what is restricting the flow but I see that it uses the old-style cartridge so it can't be the cartridge. I need to find out where to determine if I can remedy it. I've already learned that it isn't a problem with the new shut-off, new hoses, and replacing the 1.5 gpm aerator/filter assembly on the faucet outlet with a 2.2 gpm makes it worse because no more water comes out and it simply comes out with less force. I'm hoping I can take it apart and drill out the restrictions. There has to be a restriction on both the hot and cold because on just hot or just cold slows down the flow until you put it in the mix position. I wished I had not gotten rid of my old Moen faucet when I replaced the countertop. If I can't find something that flows a lot better then I'll either set up a check valve that sends 2 gpm down the drain plus the 1.5 gpm to get hot water there, or put in a recirculating system. Fortunately I saved my old toilet

Excellent step-by-step instructions - esp lining up all the parts in order and testing the clip inserts and hot-cold orientation properly BEFORE getting too far ahead.....those step if missed will frustrate many DIY folks.......... AAA+++ video

Saved me a call to the plumber, thanks my guy!! Also you might wanna consider spending the extra 15 bucks on a cartridge puller...I got mine out eventually without one but it took every upper body muscle I had and multiple attempts before it finally came out.

I always thought the cartridge only went in one way, but low and behold, it turns when installed and it flips the hot and cold sides. learned that after swapping the supply lines. Lesson learned.

Great video but what if you cannot break the deal with the plastic removing tool included? When I did exactly what you did to loosen the old cartridge the plastic remover tool cracked in half. What would you do in this case?
@FIXITHomeImprovementChannel4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Moen recommends spraying white vinegar or CLR into the faucet to break down the buildup of mineral deposits around the cartridge. I would return the plastic removal tool and get a new one. Make sure you removed the retaining clip. After you let the vinegar or CLR work, move the tool back and forth gently, move it up and down to help break the bond.
