I just came back from a twenty days trip to Iran. My iranian friend drove me around the country to the most beautiful places, and we used to be silently listening to her playlists during those long hours in the car. Repeatedly this enchanting song would come up and at one point I said "this singer is absolutely wonderful, who is he?" and she laughed and said "just about the greatest ever!". I am an absolute ignorant in iranian music but I was completely struck with how swiftly, softly, smoothly, naturally it found its place under my skin, into my ears and heart and couldn't leave the country without some cds by Shajarian: I will forever keep in my heart the sweetness of "Sarve Chaman" playing in the car stereo while desert landscapes were passing by the windows. Thank you Ostad, you are being my door to a whole new world of musical experience and I am so glad I 'met' you.

His tonal range is incredible, it may sound strange to Western ears, but so many singers we idolize could never sing like this
@amira.65444 жыл бұрын
This is mostly because Iranian music is based on vocals. It is the vocals that defines the rhythm and melody. As a result, experienced singer like Mr Shajarian can provide such a performance by their vocal chords.

Well it depends who you "Ideolize"! Franco Corelli, Mario del Manaco? Or pop American pseudo-music singers? West is not merely Justin Bieber or at most Whitney Huston! @Lightbringer Come on dude! not another one of these "Freddie Mercury's better than the whole universe" nonsense! What you're hearing is the sound of a 73 year old man! 73!!!! To better understand why they're saying what they're all saying, maybe you better and easily can familiarize yourself with his music (and maybe Persian traditional music in this case), by checking out his other stuff, maybe from his younger days (and in order to compare something to another thing in general that may be the best way) I'm a big fan of Freddie's, and have been for nearly 2 decades! however what you're saying is just an opinion, based on your taste and not based on any musical knowledge or fact whatsoever! It's okay if you don't like something but that wouldn't become a fact It's not a competition! Never, in my lifetime, thought i'd come across a comparison between an Iranian traditional singer and Freddie Mercury!!! 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤣🤣🤣 Everything has to be a race, a battle or whatever!! And that's not the first time I saw Freddie's name been thrown around in such comparisons!!!

Kudos to the NPR crew for putting up that paper that says "Khosh omadid Ostad!", it translates to "Welcome master/teacher". "Ostad" is a title that's used to address someone who excels at their craft, often used to address teachers, musicians, artists, etc. as a sign of respect.
@aletheabodine48194 жыл бұрын
This performance is unlike any other I think I have ever witnessed. The synthesis of sound is unparalleled. And all of it is showcasing the singers, M. Reza Shajaran's voice. The vocal gymnastics are unreal - sometimes soaring, sometimes thrashing, tripping - falling - tumbling and walking to climb and float again. The journey is utterly and completely his own, illuminated by the text. The instruments echo back, his journey - each breath, each heart beat - his fall and rise to tribulation. ... now they sing together. Words no longer serve.
@itwashimmusic11 жыл бұрын
It is the beauty in his face when Ostad Shajarian watches the instrumentalists play. Could he, as a master demand they be carried by him? Of course. He could do anything he wants. But he *wants* the song to be what it is, and their part of the 'singing' is as beautiful to him as his own. You can see it in his face. I was in tears for most of this. This is beauty in motion...

He was our Pavarotti and then some. His technical prowess was only matched by his perseverance in studying the Persian music which unlike it's Western counterpart was mostly undocumented and usurped by religion. A true master of his craft and scholar of his art. He wanted the to show the world our music, which he believed had the capacity to be appreciated globally through the language of music. I remember in a talk he gave at the Stanford University, he stated that Persian music has a very strong structural syntax which allows for an infinite arrangement of motifs to articulate anything and everything better than any spoken language. Bless his soul.

I would translate the title as "About Love" (Az Eshgh). Shajarian has chosen three different poems from three different poets. I tried to put them together in the simplest way in one piece as if they had a hidden puzzle to become one story. Here it is my take: 1. Behahani: Why did you leave me? Why didn't you look back to my love? 2. Sadi answers: That wasn't real love, real love burns you. 3. Baba Tahir continues: O' you, my burning love, why don't you show me your kindness instead of this wrath? (leaving and not paying attention to me ...) * Baba Tahir concludes: value yourselves in the present with love before life (or death) break you apart.

Maesros indeed! I am totally unfamiliar with Iranian music but, after encountering this by chance, this shall be rectified.

Please search for "Shajarian Rabbana". It's one of his MOST famous, albeit earliest pieces. It's breathtaking. He's singing some verses in Quran.

I love to see a man sing with passion and full abandon like that! Great players.

Ostad (“master”) Shajarian has passed away today at the age of 80 after a long fight against kidney cancer. Thanks to npr and tiny desk team for producing this treasured performance. He will live in our hearts forever.

I am here because of NPR's post on Instagram I saw a few minutes ago. Instant fan! There are 2 things that are going when I am in a situation like this: 1) I feel sad because I don't know as much music as I want to know. 2) Expanding musical horizons and get more inspired as a music producer! Anyway, words mean nothing in front of the music. If you know what I mean! Peace! Rest in Peace!

11:27 😊 I know you are singing and dancing as your soul advances to the next stage. You have been born again- as your journey inevitably continues. Happy graduation. This is how I feel about all the people who have left us in this physical 3 dimensional world. Thank you for aligning with your Higherself/God and channeling the divine the way that you did. You will always be alive in my eyes- and in my life, I will keep you alive with the help of all the beautiful memories and gifts you left for us. Until we meet in the next dimension, Ostad.
