Yep, or like having black friends for dinner and surprised that nothing in the house is missing after they left. The offensiveness come from the preconceived notion that one particular group of people tend to follow certain stereotypes. And in this specific case, it shows the prevalent and often wrong western orientalist views of other cultures, such as the arrogant view that a hijab always represents oppression.

ok but real talk: 1)the hijab is not exclusively and necessarily muslim. Is been a common piece of clothing in all of the Midde east, Central and Indian Asia, north of Africa and even eastern Europe for hundreds of years. 2)She literally said she's Jordanian, a place where hijab is common amongst many women, so regardless of her beliefs, the hijab might just be a thing she likes to use because of her cultural heritage. 3)I'm so done with the whole "hijab bad" "everything haram" bullshit, I'm sick of people fitting entire cultures with long complex histories that they neither understand nor know anything about into monocromatic etiquettes just because they don't look, do or think like they do. She could very well be jewish, christian, or even atheist but all they see is a hijab, not a person, not an artist, a hijab. Cultural targeting is dangerous people, specially for the muslims in such difficult times like these.

It's not called a hijab in Europe though. Its just a headscarf, mostly for protection against the sun while working outside at the fields and also a fashion choice. Saying from experience from Norway too! It's weird to see modern people look down on hijab when we almost had the same fashion/style here not that long ago. Some old women here still like wearing this! =) I just dont understand some people smh
@starbiird
@starbiird 2 жыл бұрын
What you said is completely right although I think that your wording doesn’t make too much sense to me! Hijab is a religious robe as hijab is directly Islamic, headscarves are fabrics anyone can wear on their heads and is a way of fashion/culture but I think it isn’t correct to wear a headscarf in the manner of a hijab (+ to my knowledge your terminology is a bit off hijab = covering your body in the name of Allah [swt] it’s not only the headscarf), as it is inappropriate. Typically headscarves that are not Islamic show a bit of hair, neck, adorned with a shirt that does not cover until your wrist, or a skirt/shorts and pants that don’t cover your ankles. So while I think you’re right on the fact that headscarves are not exclusively Islamic, the hijab is since it is more than just a head cover, it is covering your whole body modestly in the name of Allah [swt] Culturally, before Islam people wore headscarves because of the heat but they did not cover themselves or act modest, as it was the norm for women to be more like.. tools (I hate to say it) for men wayyy back then in the Middle East, so while headscarves are known as fashion or cultural, without religious choices and proper practices it will never be the same as the value of the whole hijab. Please correct me if I’m wrong, this is just what I’ve learned as a Muslim woman and I am happy to be educated.

@@MohammedAgbadi I can see why some people might be upset or bothered or just find it odd that there's this compliment, but as someone who's also a member of the minority religion that has many members covering for religious reasons, I've had my fair share of criticisms and being told backhanded comments and compliments but the other way around, usually basically implying that I can show more skin if I'd like to, which of course I'm not interested. Basically, in other words, other people's ideologies and baggage being imposed upon me, I don't know maybe they grew up in the super strict home that yelled at them if they didn't cover up enough so then they think they're being super liberal by giving me some backhanded comment about the way I portray myself? I don't know but I specifically also have gotten it from a lot of older women especially those who practice a little less or perhaps are less observant although that doesn't really mean to anything to me but they seem to feel some sense of assumed judgment upon them simply because I appear to be more practicing than they are in our religion, I guess kind of like how people will get defensive towards you if you are a dentist and then once you mentioned it they start to defend how they floss and brush all the time or whatever? I'm guessing it's kind of like that but it still has been very uncomfortable especially in my teen Hood and have gotten comments from others that I guess left their religion and just assume everyone who covers up for religious reasons are oppressed. Perhaps this comment was offensive to some but to be honest I'm glad that finally people are acknowledging that there's nothing anti-feminist about covering up your skin, especially as someone who grew up in a world where it was considered feminist to hypersexualize yourself for the public and then so if you cover yourself up it was seen by society as backwards rather than four words because you're a woman making your own decision based off of your spiritual beliefs. I remember even relatives saying stuff about it and anytime they mention them wearing a skirt they would talk about how they don't cover as much as I do which I really don't give a freak about but they decide to mention it anyway. This is what I mean by weird backhanded comments about my modesty standards, and then people decide to make commentary by telling me about how it's not really necessary to be that modest or how female physique is beautiful and how I'm beautiful which makes me extremely uncomfortable when people give me commentary about my physical appearance because also for one it really shows their insecurities more than anything and also I really hate attention being brought to my physical appearance at all whatsoever. I just want to live my life and I don't give a freak about appearances but it really bothers me when people decide to bring attention to it when it's unnecessary. Put on top of that when they start making weird comments about how they don't cover up as much as I do and then explaining why like literally every single time they mention a garment that doesn't cover up as much as mine does but I literally don't care. I guess most Muslims didn't experience that so then that's why they find this comment in the video offensive? I don't know about you guys but I'm just so happy to see that again, finally people are seeing that there's nothing sexist at all or backwards about wanting to cover up more as a woman

But I don't think covering the face was a problem with security in the last 20 years ... Sure some criminals tried to use it but it doesn't really work believe me .. and since the pandemic started everyone is covering thier faces and it doesn't seem to be a problem What I want to say is they can deal with it .. it's not dangerous or anything

Thank you for enlightening me I have never been a women nor was i born in a reality/time/culture where the Hijab was an option for me when it comes to beliefs and religion it is believing/having faith in something you believe is truth out of the infinite something you resonate that extends past personal truth but as universal law truth where this truth is shared among other believers. truthfully I am a fool and all i do is reflect wondering if we're all presently even real what is real? what matters? reinforced patterns from this realm adopted or pushed upon there is a constructed perspective we each have from growing in this life where a collective amount of consciousnesses have solidified and defined ("things" because what is something when it does not have anything) as truth('s) in this realm (example Red. Red is red because many believe it is red. If someone where to call Red shellow are they right or wrong? if we take away our meanings and understandings of Red it is still there but what is it is it really there we cannot call it "nothing or silence" because it is something, that thing we call red and teach and pass to others but what is the original truth of this thing what is it's origin?) i believe if it is real truth everyone will know but until then i hope all artist can feel something meaningful and know what matters is what you believe about yourself and your art you matter and what you care about matters I just hope one day we can all care about each other and respect each other heading towards a healthy future

Non-Figural art is promoted in Islam which differs from Christian art because drawing a person/animal/figure can be termed as "Idolatry". Just for those who's wondering, the art being forbidden in Islam is a bit of a misunderstanding, back in the days of Mohammed (peace be upon him) many people tend to use "art" like statues, paintings and what not to be worshipped, and by doing so you're "challenging God" and in Islam its a sin to believe in a God other than Allah, and thats how the "art is forbidden" started. So if you're a muslim artist, its okay to continue making art as long you don't make them with bad intention or bad purposes like what Mohammed Agbadi said.

All of this is very confusing. A religion has to be straightforward for people to follow. How is it possible that there is disagreement about such a basic premise as whether or not art is haram? I see plenty of Muslim artists shamed on Twitter, who seem to think it is haram to draw anything. I guess many of them feel that way, or why attack those cartoonists in France?

Or if someone looked at Agbadi and complimented his art and compared it to his skin colour or something. cool video, just one thing about art and islam is that unfortunately websites like IslamQA pay a lot of money to he prioritized with their posts saying art is haram. It is a way of promoting salafism/wahabism through soft power and skew islamic judgements to their view. Many scholars see art and the artistic form as perfectly fine as long as it is not used for iconography or deifying a person, which is why art depicting prophets are forbidden. Even the first 4 Caliphs of Sunni Islam had their visages stamped into coins. It is really unfortunate how certain views of Islam have been prioritized simply because their proponents are Arab and thus claim to have better understandings of Islam when not all Arabs think like them and many of the greatest scholars were not Arab

The thing is, both of my parents are also artist (and muslims), and I was about to apply myself to art college to pursue my dream to be a comic artist... I was really sure my family had mounts of sin because we drew A LOT. And then I start drawing living beings with flying heads and faceless, until I found out that the ulamas haven't really reach that as a full conclusion, I start drawing again after that, of course for and with good intentions. As a Muslim who studies a lot of texts and actually draw stuff, the only reason for drawing/sculpture to be haram is because of how the newcomer of Islam thousands years ago in the opening of Mecca was really not that strongly religious(not sure the right word too phrase that),once the last prophet died the situation amongst others at that time was quite chaotic like they divided in I forgot the exact number but it's 8 I think groups because they have different approach to Islam and that's why the close friends of the prophet became khalifah/Ruler.Then yeah I'm guessing the reason for it to be bad is because of that and it depends on the intention usually, I want to elaborate more but well I don't want to make it too long and unreadable.Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure it's the correct information I'm sharing.

I help mod in a cosplay subreddit, and I can see how that comment immediately makes people feel awkward and offended. The art had nothing to do with their appearance, so it was just weird to point it out. Kinda like how we removed comments that aren’t about the cosplay craft/work someone did: ie: “you’re eyes are so beautiful” instead of focusing on the cosplay/craft they’re bringing up their eyes (not in respect to contacts or makeup for the costume). I can see a devil’s advocate of the commenter trying to say something like “even though their face is covered their creativity still shows” but even still, doesn’t make it better or right. It’s still focusing on something not related to the actual topic and is just weird to say. :/

This is probably one of the biggest reason I'm scared to try to reach out to study abroad. I'm a hijabi, I want to study abroad when I was younger but when I notice the large amount of Islamophobia there is it's really discouraging. And I shouldn't be, whether I'm a hijabi or not, what I wear on my head and how I cover my body shouldn't be an obstacle, but it turned to one because these people think that wearing one stops me of success, and if I am able to achieve success, they'd think that it's incredible that I managed to achieve success even though I "wear a Hijab" These people are the ones making it look like that wearing a hijab is an obstacle. Like I don't know man, It's just fabric that I slapped on my head to cover my hair and neck, and modest clothes that I use to cover my body. Why do they see it as something that can hinder a success? If a woman showed off her body she will be called a whore, If a woman is dressed simply, she will be called basic and uninteresting. And if a woman is dressed modestly with a hijab, oh boy. And it's not just men who say this even women would judge other women, and I really want you people to shut your little mouth up, stitch it up Coraline style, and just see someone the way they are for once.

While everyone may believe or follow a certain religion, there's still groups of people who follow a different set of rules. For example, you can be Christian and not eat or drink a certain food, because of your religion, but then there could be someone who is also Christian, eats and drinks what they want, because Christianity didn't say they couldn't. So on and so forth. That's where the confusion is. I find it ridiculous when non religious people try to dictate or call out religious people, just because they "looked it up" "researched" or "study" religious people. It's extremely off putting, since it not only spreads false information, but creates it as well.

That's was so out of context though. Why would you mention that when talking about dream projects?

one annoying thing about that kind of comment it's that they repeat the offense even if it's to rebuke it. It shows that when you look at a person you are actually thinking about this negative stuff, as if that person naturally need your reassurance that they are okey being like they are, virtue signaling that you are not like the other people who would discriminate her. Like saying "heey I know people probably call you fat and fugly but I think you are really attractive. Smile". YOU are not Katy Perry, there is no need to rewrite fireworks.

How one poorly worded compliment can become such a big thing is rather scary I think. ^-^;

I don't understand why people don't like to see someone wear hijab they say that it's not "Freedom" I am a Muslim and I have many non Muslim friend one of them ask "why Muslim women wear hijab and men not, it's not fair" like I don't understand why people can't except it.
