The first reference to Iran is believed to have been in Avestan, The language of the Iranic people of the north eastern frontiers of the greater Iran ( today's Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenisan ).

Persian is one of many Iranic languages/ethnicities. Technically, Persia is a region in Iran called Farsa. The Persians conquered the rest of Iran and much more. Hence why it was called the Persian Empire. Later, another Iranic people called the Parthians (from Turkmenistan), did the same. So it was called the Parthian Empire. So my guess is that Iran is preferred, because it's inclusive of all Iranic ethnicities in Iran. The Parthians started refering to their state as Iran... probably for this reason. While the name Persia kind of implies it's the land of the Persian ethnic group, while the other groups are excluded.

Persian is not one of the Iranic languages, it is the language of Iranians, Afghanis and Tajiks, yes there are variations and accents and dialects, but the mother language is the same. BTW, there is no Farsa in Iran. The old Persian name for the area you are referring to is Parseh, from which the word Persian has been derived. The present geographical boundaries on Iran have no historical significance. You may count Kurdish as one of the Iranic languages, but then again even Kurdish has differing versions depending which part they live in.

Your pronunciation of his name and the title of the song were pretty good. Iran used to be called Persia pre 1935 and both names are still used these days. Strictly speaking, a Persian is someone who comes from the state of Pars but as a whole the majority of Iranians are Persians, The food is the same although , there are some regional variations.
