On July 29, 1911, an all Indian club, Mohun Bagan AC beat East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 in the final of the coveted IFA Shield. Bagan’s win is considered as one of India's greatest ever sporting victories. The eleven players of that triumphant team became the first sporting legends of the country and are known as “the immortal eleven”.

It’s scary to play against bare footed player. If they can run with the ball and strike the ball strong while barefoot. Just imagine how much better they could do with a boot? You could run faster with better grip on the pitch and strike the ball stronger with a better touch with a boot.

I've studied CBSE in Delhi and a really elaborate Story of Cricket was there without any significant conclusion. It was in class 8th I guess but this is huge. Not just because I'm a football fan but in terms of what it must have meant during those times. I can only imagine. I wonder where did it all go wrong for Indian Football. I mean we were among the best countries in Asia in the 50's and 60's. Qualified for the world cup and all. Poor administration probably :(

Shresth Jakhwal in 50s & 60s Olympics were more important than World Cup so it's not all fault of administration then but the reason downfall of the football in India is the administration . In Bengal we have some huge collection of books where briefly written about that era's Indian club & players storys.

I don't know man. People were, are and always have been passionate about football in our country. It is out of these passionate set of people some step up and take the responsibility of administration Ex- Germany winning the 2014 world cup because of elaborate preparations in infrastructure and other aspects between the years '98 and 2002. Then out of these investments came up players like Kroos,Ozil,Gotze,Reus etc the way now U-17 and U-19 players are flourishing. In 50-60yrs you couldn't encourage a sport everyone was wanting to play anyway is.. it doesn't make sense. Honestly we lost all our sense after 1947. Fighting again and again over India Pak, not coming to any solution on the same issues. Same one sport getting all the attention. Although I feel like now it's getting better :) Let's hope for the best.

Its there in West Bengal State board books. But the current central government wants to portray Bengalis as "AntiNationals". So it has been carefully omitted from the CBSE books! 🙂

Also, one more facr, Mohun Bagan captain of 1911, after the game said that the British flag will come down when Mohun Bagan wins their next shield. Mohun Bagan won their next shield in August 1947. India became independent on 15th August 1947. 🙂

It is said that when the team was returning to the club with the Shield, a Brahmin pointed to the Union Jack atop the Fort William & asked - ” When will that come down ? ” Somebody replied that ” It will come down when Mohun Bagan will win the shield again.” It may be a coincidence , but Bagan won their next shield in 1947 - the year of Indian Independence.

I hope it along with East Bengal, Minerva , Shillong Lajong, etc. become part of the I.S.L. I want a 20 team 1st division, 34 team 2nd division composed of teams of each state and union territories. 29 state teams and 5 teams where the 2 small union territories be combined to form a single team and a 3rd division consisting of knockout style playoffs between local teams of different states belonging to different conferences (North, South, East and West ) fighting it out to get promoted to the 2nd division, more F.I.F.A. licenced coaches for the national academies & clubs and baby leagues in all states and union territories starting from children aged 7 .

34 teams in 1 division is too many. Teams can't be reasonably expected to play 66 matches a season in the league alone. The ISL is bullshit. We are copying the American way when there is nothing better than the solid British league system. 4 divisions of 20-24 teams each with a couple of cup competions. D nopt try bringing states into this. SC almost ruined the cricket system by bringing states into the equation.

I'm Indian and I love football ever since I understood that in my school Football triumphed over all other sports, even over Cricket, in a country that considers Cricket as its common religion. My school considered it as a religion and if more people in India start playing the game at least as much as they watch it, India will be a big name in the Football world as well. Two goals, one ball and 90 minutes, it is much more romantic than it seems and it bloody is a pleasure to love this beautiful game.

this is a fascinating story of course but also very sad to see that despite playing football from such a long time having a club like bagan which is a club as historical as the european giants, the game and the quality dint improve and we neglected football by focusing more on cricket and hockey. we still lag behind in world football hopefully the new changes and intrest by the young generation will take us to highest level.
