Only been playing Squad for 2 days. I got stuck with SL twice in a row. The guys were really supportive, and helped me figure it out. It's so overwhelming and stressful, yet somewhat addictive. I want to build up my leadership skills and get really good at it. Especially for cases where the only other SL option is a 10 year old who barely speaks english. LOL

Imho, no offense intended... don't sl yet, just play. Get experience in the game, figure out the common/solid fob locations, strats, mistakes your sl's make, watch how your good sl's juggle everything. Once you've got that down, try your hand at sl. You and your squadmates will have a much better time. (Of course it isn't always avoidable, that said I would focus on simply being a squad member for your first 100+hours as much as possible.) For context, I didn't start actively trying to SL until almost 600 hours. Even then it was overwhelming, but much less so than it was/would have been at 100 or less. P.S. Welcome to squad man, it's a great game with lots to learn. I wish you luck in however you decide to play :)

Honestly, it's a lot of practice to get to a good space with squad leading. At the beginning of my squad career, I didn't like squad leading for more than one game every once in a while because it was so exhausting worrying if people were following my orders, creating good strats, and all the while fighting well in a game that's very punishing combat wise. Over time though, I figured out the perfect things to do, say, etc to ease that stress. When I create my squad I give it a name that implies teamwork, and I brief my squad at the beginning with expectations about how they will fight and play in my squad. This right away gives me some charisma for my ethos, and makes it so people are that much more likely to follow my orders. Then I made enough mistakes to learn what strats are good and what are bad. Now I rarely don't squad lead, as it's more of a macro strat game for me that's really fun just because I can experience the fights as well.

Here’s another very important tip: assign a hot key to your observe marker in settings; this way you can show other members in your squad exactly where the enemy is without having to guess based off the command map. Also, when you do this an icon appears for all members of your squad exactly where the enemy is for ease of engagement.

Edit: October 2020. Added a few more tips. I've been squads leading for 600+ hours now and here is some advice I have: 1. Make sure every person in your squad has a microphone and uses it. Name your squad mic required always. There is no point to a squad if you can't communicate with each other. It makes your life a billion times easier and your squad much more effective. 2. Following off the first point, I ALWAYS do mic checks on the way out of spawn once all the comms are cleared. I also sometimes get my fire team leader to do them if I'm busy with command chat. 3. Personally I find that assigning fireteam leaders to people who are competent, communicating and giving orders is much more effective than automatically giving the role to a marksman or AT. Again, it makes your life easier if your ftls can round up their fireteams and move on your orders while you are doing other things on the map or command. 4. Don't be afraid to kick people from the squad. It is your discretion. Of course use your own judgement and give them a few chances. Kicking people who don't listen or are disruptive or defiant will make your life easier. It will also ensure that people aren't questioning your orders excessively 5. On that last point, don't be afraid to ask your squad for their thoughts on a situation. I often ask if people know a good hidden radio spot or a nice angle of attack. Just make sure when you give a final order, people do not rebel. 6. When making fire teams I usually split my groups into fire support and AT/assault. Direct your fire teams as a unit, but split them when assaulting or defending in order to cover more ground or put the enemy in a crossfire. 7. When moving across open ground, keep your fire support back and let the assault push. Then keep bunny hopping. 8. Every ticket and life counts. If you are unsure of a situation. Keep your squads heads down and only YOU peak so your whole squad does not get wiped by an mg on a Ridgeline. 9. Use your binoculars alotttttt. 10. Communicate with helicopter pilots (direct comms). In the beginning of the match you should be using helis to move an attack or defend fob up the map FAST. Don't just use them for logi runs. A good pilot and good squad leader communication can easily win the game. When asking for a pickup, find a good spot based on the pilots skill and create a perimeter. Pop smoke to help the pilot land and provide cover when you are mounting. Mount up fast and make sure your squad is ready to get on the moment the Helo lands. 11. Have fun and be confident. No one will listen to a squad leader who says: "um so maybe we can do this????? But I don't really know. Ha ha" even if your proposal and orders are absolutely dogshit, say it with confidence and authority and people will listen. 12. Don't forget to have fun as well. Usually when it's a clear loss and

Until they can seperate comms and increase squads to 20 or so people I would say splitting the squad into fire teams is a waste of time and hugely disruptive and counter productive. I find splitting the squad up can potentially make a FT’s unintentionally go against the SL’s game plan, and or spread the squads out too thin. You then become easy pickings for a squad that stay together. Personally I give out FTL’s for my Anti-tanks and snipers so I know where they are. Then then can also mark infantry and armour. I then control the entire squad to move as one. When everyone is doing there job and working as one, it is very rare you get wiped or lose a firefight. Map depending, 2x medics, 2 x anti tank a 1 rifleman. You can then literally defeat anything.

I told them I'm still new and learn how to lead a squad.. But I find this and the video very helpful. Thanks! ^_^

@@reubs91 I see what you're saying! Every squad leader has different tactics and you have to find out what works for you and your squad. I switch it up sometimes as well. When I split up the squad into fireteams, we are generally never far away enough that we cannot directly support and cover each other. I find that moving as one blob reduces how effectively you can put your enemy in a crossfire. In short, split up your fireteams if you have a competent squad who can follow orders and move while covering each other, otherwise I would stick together like you said above.

What I love about Squad is how being squad leader takes some real leadership skills, including keeping your cool with the responsibility of not getting you squad killed at the very least Like, it's one thing to study tactics in field manuals and whatnot, but it's a whole other thing to act and speak in a manner that gets other players to follow you and trust you enough to follow your orders I haven't played as SL much because it's so overwhelming, but after 100+ hours in the game I might as well try to start learning

disagree, most SL comms should be done in the main channel so all Squaddies are aware of what’s going on. Let’s say I want the dedicated APC squad to come give me and my infantry a lift to an objective. If this was done in direct, other SLs wouldn’t be aware that the APC will be unavailable for the next 5 mins, nor where my squad is heading. If this is done in the main channel, then all other SLs get that information passively. Sure it makes the SL comms intense, but that’s the nature of squadleading. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t use direct: using the same example as before, all the subsequent coordination with the APC squad can be done in direct but direct shouldn’t be the primary mode of communication between SLs

Best advice I got starting out in squad was to play medic, learn to hang back and keep your squad up. At this point I have a few thousand hours as SL and I feel like this guide touches on two problems I am seeing in game now. 1- SL awareness of the flow of battle, where your squad is most needed for your team to win, and getting them in that position in time. Often less experienced SL's will get side tracked on magical motrar fobs, fighting off the point trying to, "get kills", etc etc. 2- Communication both between other SLs and your squad, relay info well and often, be clear, but NOT silent. Lastly, i agree, Logi is THE most powerful weapon in the game, IF it is used wisely. Great guide MoiDawg, keep it up bro.

Playing SL is way too overwhelming for me, trying to listen to so many people talking at once and even knowing who said what at any given time on top of figuring out which tiny map icon they are after having to mouse over each of them to find out is just too much. Squad members should really be permanently visible on the compass imo and there should be a visible indicator on their head when they speak instead of just the name in the bottom left of the screen.

I love how clear and concise you are when giving the juicy details about being a SL. The best way for anyone to become a SL or wants to be an SL is to simply try it in a game. The only way you're going to get experience of being a SL is by taking that role hahaha. Like MoiDawg said, you're going to fuck up, but if you simply take a breather and adjust on the fly, you're going to be fine in the end. Losing a match just means you gained knowledge of what you need to work on next game and so on. My first REAL taste at being a SL in the Army was when I was a measly little Specialist TL and my SL had to leave for a few days and I was left in charge... Boy did I fuck up badly hahahaha, but I knew the basics of being a SL by watching him, and observing what he was doing and why he was doing it so I could use that knowledge for myself. The same applies here, if you listen in game to what the SL are doing and saying, you'll also get an idea of what you need to do during certain situations in order to take the fight to the enemy and claim victory. This was just my little rant. Hahah

You are a legend. I come from other kind of shooters (Rainbow Six Siege, Insurgency Sandstorm (though it's different from R6)...) and had always wanted to try this kind of game but didn't know if I'd really like it. I have to say, I've been playing Squad for less than a week and I love it. There's a lot of new people right now, and I've already found myself twice in the situation of being SL because all the other squadmates were even newer than me. So basically, I squad leaded at my third game or so without having absolutely any idea hahah but I tried to do my best, giving orders, putting marks, etc. and following the example of my previous Squad Leaders. However, I really liked those two times as a SL and wanted to really know how to get better at it and use the role at its full potential, so thanks for the video, it helped a lotttt. I'll probably watch your streams too. I will inform myself about your squadleading sessions, cuz I'd love to be in one of those and learn from you :) Cheers!

Finally, a tutorial. Due to having who-knows-how-many hours in Project Reality, roughly 6 or 7 years mainly only playing SL and nothing else apart from medic to cut my teeth in the beginning, I found myself defaulting to SL:ing in Squad due to everyone's incompetence. Otherwise there'd often not be a single competent squad to lead the way for the rest of the team. There were however cocky, unskilled SLs who "have been playing since Alpha" which I found quite funny, having been playing before the game was even thought of! The big problem is due to the lack of competent leaders, there is no-one to take example from, and often newbies get the SL role pushed onto them which can be really stressful, especially if you're not someone who has strong social skills. Some nervous guy with 50 hours or something will often make a squad after no-one else does, and I'll encourage them to keep the role and give some pointers as long as they didn't join Squad yesterday or anything. If all SLs were somewhat competent, you could learn with imitation, but currently there's largely only bottom-tier people to imitate. I know I should be doing my part by leading and offering an example, but it's time to pass on the torch a little too. Well, now we have a real compelling tutorial, and I think this'll actually change a bit in the next year or two.

I started squad leading at like 30 hours into the game. Just do it on a noob friendly server and make sure they're aware that you're new to squad leading. If someone still gives you shit ignore them, tell them to go play on a non-noob friendly server and sweat over there. The majority of SLs I've seen (in the noob friendly servers I play at least) they're extremely quiet and aren't very good. As long as you're actively talking to your squad members you'll already be better than average, even if your orders are bad. Some people will help you out too in the beginning.

@@thebulletkin8393 yeah basically just make an infantry squad, grab a logi truck, and make a FOB and HAB in a decent spot. Don't focus on combat, give Fire Team Leadership to 2 people who are experienced and have them do callouts for you. Keep your combat orders basic until you get a few SL games under your belt, just say stuff like "we will be defending this objective, we will be attacking this compound, etc." Focus on contesting objectives, never have your squad go into combat or stay in combat without knowing why. Your squad members are almost entirely responsible for knowing how to fight, you just have to guide them so they know when/where to fight.

I like that sl's have been giving more specific orders, using fireteams and so on, recently. But don't do too much too fast, and then start issuing threats to people when everything doesn't go well. That seems to be the rising theme in Squad this year. And has had me mostly sticking to vehicle play, with friends.

A tiny detail that might be of huge importance - The SL-markers also give accurate distance for Squad-members. As a frequent LAT/HAT-player, that info is invaluable!

Biggest issue I've had playing Squad since Alpha was the fact that almost every single random doesn't stick with me on objectives or even help build FOB's. It's this reason why I opt to not squad lead anymore. Squad leading involves a lot of map work, radio comms and on the fly decision making which can leave you vulnerable when you also have to focus on your own security and pop bad guys crawling up on you in bushes 10m away. If I do squad lead, I lock at 4 or play with friends because herding cats while under fire, returning fire, while on the map coordinating with other squads, marking targets, predicting enemy and friendly movements, directing fire support, calling assets all at the same time is extremely complex and over burdening when I don't have guys nearby to set up any security.

Tried SL for the first time today. I did terribly, but my squad was super positive and understanding. They told me to keep command so that I'd learn. And I did. Quite a bit.

Having a small squad by locking it in time, will help you build leadership skills. leading over 8 people is crazy, try 4 first. Personally I started leading with small 4 man squads and setup a mortar team. Often this helps the team, its easy to do and not much moving around. It will train your leadership skills in a very good way, your not getting shot at, but you do need to make sure there is runs for ammo and maybe having your logi help other squads. 2 of your mortars will need constant marking, callouts and feedback aswell.

One thing i'd like to hear you talking about on this subject are advices on the general decision making based on what could happen in the middle of a game ( possible flag points on RAAS, when is best to stop attacking a flag and fall back etc .. )stuff like this

My biggest problems with SLing are backseat SLs, command chat turning into a blame game, squad members who wanna run off and do their own shit, and bad luck with ending up exactly where the enemy is. I also have to be more sure in my decision making even if that decision may have not been the best

FTLs are personally my favourite way to get new players and stubborn teammates to listen to commands. If you play with a mate, make him FTL, and give him half the squad and send him off as recon, or as fire support, or as needed etc.

I got Squad a while ago and put a couple of hrs into it however never tried playing as an SL. Well, I booted the game up again, found a new player friendly server and hopped on. Unfortunately for me, all the squads were full so I ended up making my own, and was told that I needed to be SL.... I can honestly say it has been my funnest experience on Squad yet. I felt like my words actually had an impact on what was going on around me, and I could better support everyone in the field. I won't lie, I'm a horrific shot and usually would try to play auto rifleman, but as SL I found that was less important, what mattered was how well you took in the information from all 3 radio channels as well as your environment, as well you could react to said information. My Squad didn't do much killing, and got killed a lot. But we took a respawn point and objective and kept the enemy from taking it back, despite them throwing 2 tanks and an APC at us. Between all of the other SL's being really helpful to me, the Armor commanders coming back to support us, my squad and one other squads tenacity, persistence, and determination, and the other SL's hitting other enemy points to relieve the pressure from us we prevailed and took the point. One thing that I found very interesting was that after we took the point, we were asked to clear a little village between objectives, we did that no problem and decided to go help the other squads at the other objective, When I informed the other SL's of this they told me to instead head to another objective and attack there. However as I went to relay this to my Squad an enemy force spotted us heading up the road to the objective we'd started towards and shot me. The interesting part to me was how quickly the squad became a disorganized mess. The moment the SL went down everyone started doing their own thing, one went to help me, 3 scattered and began returning fire and a couple decided to keep pushing on the previous objective. Even once I was back up it took me a solid minute to get everyones attention back and to get them doing what we were asked to do. The match ended with a major victory on my side, having beaten the enemy with 237 tickets to spare.

2 medics are required in my opinion. Makes such a difference if you want to move fast.
@raedius_music
@raedius_music 4 жыл бұрын
actually medics slow the squad down and you lose firepower, so if you want to move fast and achieve something quickly, having to stop and wait for your squad to be patched to 100% is actually quite normal obvioulsy but slow. as an example if its one squad vs another squad spawning off a hab, if each team trades a kill every 15 seconds, and as squad leader you only push with 75% or greater squad composition, then the enemys hab can keep up spawning players about as fast as your medic can keep reviving, and so its a stalemate... if however you overpower the enemy hab by using less medics and more assault then you can rush the hab down. thats a free one

If you have a TKL keyboard, bind these to talk directly to other squads, INSERT: SQD1 HOME: SQD2 PGUP: SQD3 END: SQD5 PGDN: SQD6 7: SQD7 8:SQD8 9:SQD9 HYPHEN: SQD4 Why not use delete instead of hyphen? Because delete deletes de bind so you cant bind anything on it, but it is what it is.

I feel like there wasn't enough emphasis on the importance of Rally and HAB placements and their mutual relationship; I think it is by far the most important part of Squad leading. You could have very bad aim, very bad comms but as long as you are good at placing RPs and HABs then you are already doing your job.

One thing I think needs to be touched on more is morale. If you pump up your guys, joke, sing, your squad mates will be more likely to do those dumb boring things like doing a logi runs or cap first points. Also it’s totally fine to kick toxic people from your squad if it’s lowering morale.

I find that finding specifics for the vehicles really difficult. Like how many shots it takes a BMP2 to kill a warrior or where to shoot a warrior with a bmp1 outside of your wireguided atgms. Stuff like that. It’s hard to do this testing yourself because jensens range, the one you can use by yourself without a server, doesn’t have accurate damage demonstrations, like all MBTs can get 2 shot no matter what as long as the round doesn’t bounce. So I have a hard time believing what other things I test due to this bug. Is there anyway we can compile some really intensive armor statistics between the vehicles? Like developing the percent chance of cooking ammo off or the specific values of armor in millimeters and the specific pen in millimeters? Or just general guesses? Can we establish the angle at which a HEAT round will bounce, guaranteed? Or is there not one? I’ve played about 200 hours of armor and I understand that that isn’t a whole lot but it’s not like I’m the freshest meat on the market😂 but I’m just curious about a lot of super specifics because I really do like data and all that stuff.

So what I learned from being an SL, is that your men have to trust you. Not just because you're the SL but as a human being, because my way of squad leading is to brief my men and ask for their input because while I may be the leader, we are a team. I ask how we should approach? What point we should go to first? What vehicles should we take? Because I want to include them because making the decisions on your own while yes it is stressful, delegating that to the rest of your squad is much easier. Put your men first before yourself and care about them as if it was irl or well for my style. Show your squad that you give a damn about them and don't see them as body bags, and if command is telling you to push an objective that will 100% lead to the death of your men, tell your men and say "Hey boys, command wants us to push OBJ, want to push or hang back?" Put your team first. Because like a country, there's no kingdom without it's people.
